    Love it Dan mate.
Tell you something, a couple of weeks ago my missus wanted to have a looksee around our local 2nd hand charity shop for some books. Whilst i was just pottered about waiting for her I noticed a few bits of camping gear in the corner. So popped over and low and behold there was unused bits like decent vango pillows for 3 quid, used berghaus rucksack for a fiver, used SIMs and couple of used 2 man gelert and coleman tents for hardly any dosh. So my advice is have a shufty around some second hand shops as they could be a goldmine if you want to chance the gear.

Looking forward to more videos like this, as a former Venturer and Rover leader in Canada taking 15 to 17 year old into the Canadian wilderness, I have plenty of experience with budget gear over the years bought by parents. I am looking forward to seeing how this holds up, as leaders we often packed an extra tent, sleeping bag with us, sleep pad etc, as invariably we had equipment failure. We handed out a list of recommendations for equipment but this was often ignored. We then found a outfitter who made their own gear, who would lease us equipment, which definitely helped families on budgets and caused a lot less breakdowns on the trails.
    Cheers Dan

    Hi Dan,
Really enjoy this type of comparison video but was a bit surprised at the way you disregarded the sleeping bag because it came from Aldi. What I would like to see is you take the Aldi sleeping bag on a camping trip when the weather gets colder along with a second sleeping bag as a fall back in case the Aldi sleeping bag does fail miserably, this is the only way the Aldi sleeping bag will get a fair review which could help the budget camper immensely.
Great video as always, keep up the good work 👏

75 pounds sterling is less than we spend on one night at an inexpensive lodging. If this setup sheds wind and rain, it will serve one very well. For TWO: the double air mat and a sleeping bag that will 'mate' with another of the same. So: think 100 pounds with food for two and a bit more cutlery; etc.

Looking forward to seeing it in use, especially putting that tent away. I reckon you should do one where you just go online, search by cheapest and get tent, doss bag, etc. Pop out in the Autumn with Vegan next to you in a hot tent and deck chair so if your gear shits it, you can ask nicely to bunk up with him.

The first camping trip I had, out in the wilds with a friend, was 40 years ago. Everything I had was second-hand - other folk's cast-offs and loans. I dread to think how much I have spent on all sorts of gear since then.
This is the cheapest of obsessions, or one of the most expensive.
I once walked St. Cuthbert's Way with nowt but an army bivi bag, head net, a Karrimor foam mat and a nylon sleeping bag from God knows where. Wild-camped throughout the trip. My brother took me to Melrose in his car; I walked to Lindisfarne; hitched to Alnwick and got the bus to Newcastle and home. Experience = priceless. Cost = buttons.
I am going to New Zealand in October, for 6 months. It will be a tad more expensive. ;)

The other Aldi tent is 39.99 reduced from 49.99. it comes in the proper olive green also as well as the blue you picked up in the video. It looks just like an OEX fox 2 the exact same style , weight is lighter alloy poles and pegs. I'd say that would have been a much better bet that looks like a proper double skin tent with good specs. It maybe better to go a bit higher in price of all the gear not a huge amount but say 100-150... I reckon you could cobble together a good set up for summer and spring camping out of that . The sleeping bag looked good too for the money and the mat. I have inspected then in Aldi myself. I'd have those on the list, just the other tent is a way better proper tent for not much more. I think that tent and a rucksack and just the Mat, stove set and sleeping bag would be a great budget kit for not much over 100 quid. That's only the price of a night in a budget hotel these days !

You can buy instant pop up tents from ebay for £50. They have the umbrella action and are actually quite decent.
Water resistant, rather than waterproof, but very good for woodland camping when you have the canopies of the trees to help.
They hold double airbed easily and room for a small table as a bedside table. Also room for a toddlers potty or a bucket and lid. Just saying 😌. Maybe do a video on those as well.

I have one of those little stoves and it's very powerful for it's size and good for the price, I haven't found that mine gets through too much gas but then I do not have it full blast as it's quite a noisy bugger. I went with my family for our first ever camping trip . We wanted it cheap also and bought a euro hike 4 man tent and a euro hike 2 man pop up tent. (£25)The only thing I did was waterproof the tent with fabsil . I got a solid fuel stove for £1.50 and a air mat for £12.99 plus some mess tins for £8 the sleeping bag cost £10 an was a range of 5c to 25c and it got us through the two nights just fine.
Putting down the pop up tent is a royal pain tho. The tent how ever can only hold two 51cm air mats not two single air beds or a double.

    • @TimelordUK

How effective was the fabsil? I have a Blacks Octane 2 which I've had for 16 years now that really needs waterproofing. I don't know what to do, spend money on waterproof sprays (I assume I'll need a lot) or buy a brand new tent

@@TimelordUK the fabsil I got came in a tin 1ltr and you paint it on with a brush, I’ve heard the spray versions aren’t anywhere near as effective. I got fabsil gold it doesn’t have a UV blocker buy have 5x the silicone for waterproofing so opted for that and did 2 coats leaving 6 hrs apart to dry. Or do on different days but your tent mustn’t get damp or wet while it’s drying. Let it totally dry is a must!!! I only had a slight drizzle on my trip for a short while and the water just beaded and ran off and it was fine. I’m going away end of next week again so if it rains I’ll let you know.
I chose fabsil because of the positive reviews and I believe it works.
I’ve tried other waterproofing brands and they weren’t worth 2 pence tbh .

Pop up's are horrible to try to sleep in (condensation, no matter what the weather outside, the inside gets soaking). Decathlon now do a double pop up. Two pop up's one inside the other (2 seconds 2. A tight fit for two men, but spacious for 1 with gear. 4 bicycle panniers, a handlebar pack and a guitar and sleeping space). Good tent, solves the condensation problem, is easy to set up, but can be a bit of a pain packing away, there's a particular technique to it, but once mastered!!! Cost £65. And it's better than Vango's and Coleman's, both makes which I've had before. Good tents, but comparatively expensive and both a pain to both pitch and pack up. Sleeping bags? Better two cheap than one big, bulky, all weather, which are usually pretty expensive anyway. Two cheap, ones with one inside the other works better and is lighter and less bulky. And if it gets really cold, pad the space between with scrunched balls of newspaper, works brilliantly. Camping mat? Foam? Forget it. A self inflating type from Halfords costs less than £15. £75 pound budget? A bit thin. But £100, doable with good...ish gear that works. Otherwise expect some uncomfortable nights, even in moderate weather. Stoves? Nah, too much bulk, too much weight, cost of fuel (propane type) and not really very practical in real terms. Multifuel types are expensive and weigh a ton and you try buying half a litre of unleaded for it at a petrol station. They won't do it. £100 will get you what you need and stuff that is practical and will stand up to the rigours. Cheapskate it, you're asking for trouble. But don't buy big names or gimmicky/flash either, they're just a gyp. For people with more money than sense. Here speaks the voice of experience (I've cycled from London this year, headed for Aberdeen, cycle route N1, then I'll cross east to west and come back down the west of Britain then back to London....maybe. I'm currently wild camped at Berwick on Tweed, listening to the pitter patter of the rain on my tent......but I'm cosy and dry, having got here from Bamburugh Castle, where I wild camped on the beach for two days, found a good spot and set up before the rain set in).

    👍👍👍 Well worth a go.
If you (the prospective camper) doesn't enjoy it, the kids and / or their pals certainly will .. even for backyard sleepovers. It may just 'ignite that spark', or at the very least, keep them occupied and 'off the streets' 😊.
My daughter, from a young age, enjoyed sleeping outside our bedroom window, in a canvas 'scout tent' .. accompanied of course, by the family dogs .. a pit bull and a jack russel. Now, at age 36, she and her guy still go out regularly on weekend car camps up the South African Western Cape West Coast.
Thanks for sharing .. am looking forward to more.
    Take care ..

You missed out on the two styles of sleeping bags. Mummy styles. One is super lightweight.
The air mat after it rises you can blow extra air into it.
I think they’re excellent quality for the price.

Not bad value that! What about a video of what you can get second hand on Facebook Marketplace for under a £100 for gear for a family of 4? Now there's a challenge!
