I think they should revert the fake item box into its n64 version where it can block items and is almost identical to a real box
no, they should make it look EXACTLY the same as normal ones to make it actually effective to veterans not paying attention.

I like your idea for the thundercloud but I like the way the shock is now but that isn’t what I want to comment on. I think that the super leaf and the piranha plant, aside from the tc, are the worst items and it mainly boils down to how the super leaf always lasts just barely too long to chain it and the piranha plant for similar reasons as well as how it does not allow you to use your other item. I can’t count the number of times I have been screwed over by the piranha plant because of it being ahead of a star leading to me getting shocked or being ahead of a mushroom not allowing to take a shortcut at the end. And I also feel it has the same issues being not easy to chain it
If they ever do bring back the thundercloud, they can take notes from this video. Its kinda annoying that it automatically activates without any user input
I have a weird idea
what if each character had a special version of a regular item, e.g inkling getting a Gooper Blooper and Lakitu getting a lightning cloud
for fake item boxes, I think people overlook the fact that the hitbox is bigger than a banana's is, and it does a lot more damage than the banana too (it doesn't just make you spin out). if you're trying to make it rely on people seeing it as a real item box, then it isn't great, but if you use it to block off part of the track, its actually better than the banana - especially because it not colliding with things like shells is a downside defensively, but it also means that if someone's about to run into it, they can't throw a shell forward to break it and save themselves

one thought I had about the thundercloud is have it ALSO hit your targets, like if you get a green shell or bomb, the thundercloud goes to whoever you hit first (or the one in the highest position if it's multiple people i.e a bomb that hits 2 or more people)
all my goodwill towards the tc disappears when you play online
I'll be honest. I have a few gripes with this. Mostly that you think that an item that only screws over one guy in first place, only really benefiting the person in second place when it typically appears in the middle and last places is fine because "life no fair", while an item that screws over everyone and is only for people who are near or at dead last so they can catch up plenty, especially since the effect lasts longer for people closer to first place, is the worst. Also I've hopped at the right time with the POW block and I swear to god that there's no way to avoid it.
To avoid the pow block you shake the wii remote if you are using one. If you're not using that you hit the D pad. Just like how you trick in that game. You don't hop to avoid it.

Hopping does work to avoid the POW Block, it just requires frame perfect timing.
My personal idea for how they could improve lightning is to have the screen go dark (or maybe not) and make the lighting strike at random along the track so u can still avoid it if u have good reaction.
Shock is great just because you can dodge it. That's basically the most enjoyable thing about mariokart
I like the Fake Item. Of course I wish there's defensive value with it, but you could put it places that are not avoidable.
The thundercloud, I just wish you could activate it yourself, then it wouldn't be the 2nd worst item in the series.
Blue shell, lightning, (and the blooper to an extent) are necessary evils.
Pow block, IDK.
Coins, totally useless, unfun to use, they only should be picked up on the track.

tour means nothing to me so I won't factor that into my decision, that being said, it's absolutely the thunder cloud from wii that item sucks so bad

The Tanuki is actually pretty bad imo. The range is small and 99 percent of the time I’m in an area where I can even hit any other players
I get why people don’t like it, maybe it should leave your item slot once activated or something, but I found it hard to hate on considering it theoretically can block unlimited items while it’s active.

so stupid and not effective except for the human (not cpus lol)
I think CPUs do a small amount of swerving when inked, but yeah dont expect them to go clumsily crashing into everything.

You made a good point about the Blooper item. Having it make you feel like having ice physics will finally put a use to traction stat. Also, I always have to give credit to your great editing skills! The biggest problem with TCs is that with lag in the races you can get passed a TC without being near somebody or vice versa and you hit them but it doesn’t pass
I cry every time. My last few MKWII online games got floundered by a TC.

@@WadeSilver yeah it was awesome! You got some huge potential with your editing and scripting skills. Also I agree, lightning isn't fun to use and it isn't fun to get hit by, bad all around. (Although I guess I'd say the same about blooper, but it isn't as annoying to get hit by). And your ideas for fixing thunder cloud are really good and kinda makes me hope it comes back for Mario Kart 9!
A good idea for the Thunder Cloud would be that it makes you big like the Mega Mushroom. Mario Kart Wii has a mod for it and it feels way better. Every other player is trying to pump you and it feels like a fight to hold it.

turn down the shock time maybe, so people fight for the speed boost and offroad immunity while also not tryimg to be the last to have it?
I think that having a mega mushroom after getting hit by the lighting of the thunder cloud is too op. Especially in tracks with a lot of off road because the racer with the thunder cloud can just stay in the off road for at least 30 seconds and without anyone being able to hit that racer.

Most of the bad items go away if you change the item type to "strategic". It's a feature most games have that most people forget! Individual item switches would still be the best though. Such a great idea.

Something I need to mention about the POW Block is that it warns players in advance, giving them plenty of time to react accordingly and prepare for detonation. Also, you can hop dodge, but it has to be frame perfect.
Don't like the line of sight idea too much but great ideas and a great video nonetheless!

The other unfortunate fix if they make the Thundercloud but not make any changes is that it is exclusive to Battle Mode together with the Feather. It can also be an exclusive Battle Mode like Hot Potato.

Honestly, my take with the TC is that whenever you get it, there's a 50\50 chance that the thundercloud could either give you the mega mushroom power up (it'll last only for 5 seconds) or you'll just get shocked lol
I think the blooper is the worst item because it doesn't even make you mad like some of these other ones do

As a Tour player, I have to say that Banana Barrel and Bubble are the worst items in the game because they literally make you lose

Honestly I find the BS worse than Lightning. At least the Lightning affects everyone. The only thing to fix with it is to make him obtensible only 1 time per race (rarely two)

I've had one race where I got a thunder cloud as my last item, and the speed boost was the reason I got 1st. That one time is the reason I don't put it in dead last
I've had more lost races due to it than won ones. I think its shock effect should either be lessened (doesn't spin you out but shrinks you still) and only appears 1st-3rd in 12 player races since right now, it only appears 3rd-8th which is a bad place for it to be.

Mankalor has an idea as to how the Fake Item Box could come back. Also, doesn’t the TC have different mechanics in its arcade appearances?
I believe the arcade games allow you to throw the TC at other players, but I don't love that solution, honestly. I also think it doesn't activate instantly like it does in Wii. Haven't been to an arcade in years, so my experience with them is a little hazy.
@@WadeSilver I could imagine Nintendo doing a "Mario Kart Ultimate" with every character, track, and item with some tweaks made to certain items, such as the TC, POW Block, and Coin only being available in point-based modes such as battle mode and if they bring back Tour's Frenzy mechanic as a separate mode. And when I say "every character, track, and item," I'm even including the content from the arcade games
Also, another thing about the Fake Item Box: In Beach Buggy Racing 2, you can place a Fake in a real one and it will occupy the same slot. Bonus points because in that game it displays as real until you're just about to hit it similar to Mank's idea. However, in that game, instead of dealing damage, it locks up one of your item slots for a while. There's also a Double Fake that locks both of them
Here's something I've thought of to rework the Lightning: What if they gave you a bit of warning when it's used like what happens in Team Sonic Racing when someone uses the Lightning Wisp?
you know what would be a gun Mario Kart game mode? "all 1 item" aka, either you select, or the game randomly selects 1 (non blue shell-esk item) item or, 1 class of item like shells, mushrooms, ect and All boxes will be that 1 item/class of item.... I think this was in 1 game but atm I dont remember so ehh
would fix the Thunder Cloud in at least 1 game mode..... cuz it would make the ENTIRE race a game of hot potato XD
9:28 FINALLY! Someone who agrees with me that lightning is way too infuriating in modern games. Most times, when i try to secure my 10 coins for the race, lightning just HAS to show up at the end. It’s so frustrating! (I am pretty okay with lightning in Wii and 7, but that’s when 8 takes it way too far.)
the FIB may be a pretty useless item on paper, but with the greenshell it is the best frontrunning item.
why? to block (shroomless) shortcuts with them. bananas would be destroyed by shells, but not the FIB.
just look at high level competetive mkwii.

Gotta agree that the lightning cloud is overhated. Ever since I realized it gives you a speed boost, I thought it was a really fun and clever item. Your proposals on fixing it are very interesting and creative, but personally I think they should leave it just the way it is if they bring it back. Maybe be more careful about its distribution, like only show up in the middle of the pack where racers are more likely clustered together.
The blooper ice physics is actually a real thing that was created in ctpg-7 which is a mod for mario kart 7. It even works online and it’s a huge improvement for the blooper item that actually can screw over players more effectively.
Another idea for the TC could be that it sometimes shrinks the player and other times it won’t. Sometimes once it runs out the cloud just disappears without shocking the player. It would be a random chance. So it makes the item an even more suspenseful game of hot potato and a gamble. It’s a simple fix that would make it more interesting.
I'll point out that the Lightning has another effect in the spinoff games, or at least Winter Olympics DS- it cancels out all other items.
3:25 Did I just hear someone say Bubble can't be the worst item in the game?!
Yeah, from my experience, outside of the invincibility, the Bubble isn't very useful, since the player basically loses most of their control and can't use other items, pretty much allowing the others to pass you as you float by slowly.
@@pinkiemeowstic89 I have a lot of experience with the Bubble, and I have Baby Rosalina maxed out completely so she has Bubble+. With the Bubble+, you actually go pretty fast.
i feel like if you’re gonna be the only one that gets shrunk there should be a little rework of that effect, since you’re the only one moving real slow plus had your item taken away

I decided not to include the arcade items because the games play so differently from the main series, but you’re right, I definitely should have mentioned them at least.
