    Thinking about growing lilies directly on my pond liner. Any thought great video's. The depth is about 20 inch .

      If you have fish they will make a mess. Lilies need dirt to do well. I’ve seen some pond builds that included valleys for lilies to be planted in but you still need to put rocks or something around the crown of the lilies to keep fish from tearing up the roots.

    I noticed you put a hole in the middle of coconut fiber. Will the Water Lilies be able to grow up through the coconut fiber without the hole. I have a lily root where the lilies are growing from the end of the root about 4 inches in length not from the middle of the root. Thank you so much for the video. Very helpful

      The type of coconut fiber I’m using in this video which comes on a roll is very densely packed at first and I wouldn’t put it over the crown of the lily without making a hole for it. You can make the hole wherever you need to but you don’t want to cover the crown of the lily with anything. Eventually the coconut fiber does loosen up and new sprouts and roots can then come through it. When I’m potting up a new one I always try to position the crown upwards in the middle of the pot because then I don’t have to repot it for a longer amount of time. It’s ok to change the direction of the crown when repotting.

      Oh yeah, and you don’t necessarily need the sink protectors as long as you put rocks on top of the coconut fiber. The bigger your fish, the bigger the rocks should be. I’ve lately not been using the sink protectors and no trouble so far. The coconut fiber just helps to keep the lily soil out of the pond.

      @@JulieVaughn so you don't have to lay the root 4 inches long horizontally in the bucket you can stand the root up vertically?

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn  4 месяца назад

      @@pamelaselbe3784 as long as the main roots are covered with soil you don’t. I always try to have them as vertical as possible because then I usually don’t have to repot as often. That’s also why I plant in a dishpan.

    Hello, can you include Amazon links for the dishpan, sink protector, and the plant substrate?

      smile.amazon.com/dp/B073PR7LRT?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details these are my favorite dishpans. The sink protectors have had to be trimmed a lot to allow the water lilies to come through. I end up removing them after about 2 months. Not sure if I will spend money on them again but here’s the link smile.amazon.com/dp/B00J2OQBV2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details The substrate I got locally (maybe Home Depot) so I don’t have a link for that but any kind of clay substrate or pea gravel will work. I just find that the dirt stays in the pot better when I top it off with substrate and coconut fiber. My method may be a bit of overkill but it keeps my water cleaner and the lilies stay in the pots.

    I have a water lily plant in my pond and my fish have been eating the Lily pads. What can I do that doesn't involve me taking out the fish and frying them up for dinner?

      Bon appétit 😋 once they get a taste for it, you might not be able to stop them. You could try a different type of Lily. I found that my Koi will munch tropical lilies in a heartbeat, but hardy lilies don’t seem to be as desirable I’ve quit trying to grow tropicals, and all I have are hardy’s. You could try feeding them some butter, lettuce, or Romain lettuce or some other type of greens. If they get them enough, they might leave your lilies alone. When I start new water lilies, I do start them in a fishless container, once it’s established itself then I’ll put it in the pond.

    2 days later and u had a flower??? I bought 6 lillies (hardy) shipped in from Cali a month ago and all the leaves have died and ZERO new growth 😭😭😭 dug one up today and im pretty certain its dead, very mushy 😭😭😭

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn  Год назад +1

      Bummer! Well these did come from lilies in my pond that I had pulled out and divided and there was already a bud that I was careful not to break off. If it’s mushy it probably died. If you bought it online you could complain to whoever you bought it from. Maybe they’ll replace it.

      You do have to be careful not to cover the crown of the bareroot plant. If you bury the whole thing it can die.
