I was looking into what I would need to start my first time homebrewing mead and could only find information about Starsan. Which is way out of the budget for starting and seeing if it's something I would like to go further with. So this video was extremely helpful!
This is such a great information because potassium metabisulfite is dirt cheap compared to Star San for example, which might become an issue ever since I've started making larger batches, and more often. How much of potassium metabisulfite would I need to make a sanitizing solution in the amount of 1 gallon? Or slightly more... let's say a UK gallon of 4.5L?
I don't know. I usually clean equipment well before storing, but I ALWAYS clean and sanitize right before using. Sometimes a day or two before bottling I'll place clean bottles under a tent (trash bag) with K meta solution in an open-top container in there with them. Saves time on bottling day.
don't think I have ever actually dried one. Usually clean and sanitize right before use, and if there is a little water in it I'm ok with that. If I felt I HAD to dry a carboy, I'd invert over a milk carton container, or something like that to stabilize it upside down, and let it air dry.
Some winemakers do this, but I don't think boiling water alone is enough to properly sanitize. Same with alcohol sanitizer spray. K-meta is low cost, more effective option.
Pretty thorough, thank you. I usually gargle with meta before starting my siphon but I think I'll give your auto-siphon cleaning technique a try. My gums are pretty dry.
I'm just starting out and your videos are super helpful; you get right to the info. Super appreciated! Thank you & keep us the great work!
Thank you! Will do!

How do you dry the inside the tubing, pump and automatic bottle-filling device before storing?
I’m planning to make cider (hard cider to Americans) using apples from the tree in our garden and this was useful information. Thank you
Glad it helped. Good luck!

2 oz. powder to 1 gal water (US) - mix/shake well and don't inhale the fumes.
@@SHredWorld Thanks so much!
How long do supplies stay clean/sanitized for? Does this have to done directly prior to fermenting or bottling?

How do you dry a 5 gallon glass carboy?

Can I sanitize using boiling hot water and alcohol sanitizer spray???

lol Good one!
I'm working on my first batch. Do you pour K Meta back to the original container? Is the solution reusable? Thanks!
As long as whatever you are sanitizing is clean, you can reuse solution. I often pour from bottle to bottle, then back to the original container.
@@SHredWorld thanks!
Can i use vinegar or hp instead? I have a reaction to sulfite
Vinegar doesn’t sanitize. Hydrogen peroxide will, but rinse thoroughly after using.
@@SHredWorld How about 70% ethanol?
@@bhartifatnani my understanding is yes as long as it is 70%, not 90%
@@SHredWorld What percentage of Hydrogen Peroxide should be used to sanitize?
@@glyndonwaas526 Have never used, but supposedly can use 50-50 solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. I would rinse thoroughly.
And to think people use to step of grapes with their bare feet for making wine.
I am from nepal
Hello and welcome!
all that sanitation and you never sanitized the fruit
