  • Al Capone may have been one of America’s most feared mobsters, but he was also an idiot.
    About Drunk History:
    Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

    syphilis infections can affect IQ, so it's hard to say that he's an idiot when he has an intelligence test years later showing it's below 100. 95 is within the range of average intelligence btw and it easily possible his basline IQ at a younger age was much higher.

    • @pretzelstick320

      Yep. They mention the swimming pool incident so I’m surprised that they assume that his baseline was 90 even though they tested him when syphilis had been eating away at his brain for years. When he died it was said that he had the mind of a 12 year old. Idk of any accounts of him being a moron when he was at the height of his power. A lot of assumptions were made in this telling.

While I realize it’s meant to be a comedy and historical accuracy isn’t that strict, it sends a bad message when your entire skit is based off a false premise.

    • @Suzanne4415
      @Suzanne4415 4 года назад +9

      Yeah, and it even sounded like the actual score was 95? In which case, that's def. not a big enough margin to call him anything except for "normal" or "average".
      Even today's iq-tests (that are better than they were) are not that sensitive that they can give really valid reliable information about someone's abilities within the 95-110 or so range.
      (When I studied this, our professor did say that kids tend to start predictably having trouble with certain school subjects somewhere in the 80-85 range.)
      But it's kinda funny how such a large proportion of us tend to assume on some level that we're in the above-average group - even if just by a little bit. I'll admit that I do it too, even though objectively there is evidence from my life pointing in both directions. But like, come on, I studied psychometrics at a university at one point, I'm clearly on the smart side no?
      Meanwhile I also JUST watched a joke video believing for a good two minutes that footage of a hippo's butt played backwards was footage of a giant anteater species. Filing that under "outliar fluke data, invalid due to sleep deprivation, let's never think about this again".

      @Erasmus the blasphemous Agreed, most people forget he took the damn fucking test after having beeing in prison for about 10+ years and having had Syphillis since he was in his... ufff, mid or late twenties?
      So considering how late stage syphillis basicly turns your brain into mush one can only assume how smart he was in his young years. Also this video omits at the start how he HELPED building up the Gang as the head-honcho's right hand man and only taking over after the boss got cold feet after a few attempts on his life.
      It was not as easy as to 'just roll in' into Chicago, but it was a question of wheter to expand the buisness and come into conflict with other gangs, or to back down and be happy with his piece of cake.
      Ultimately it was a bold move and the first step that ultimately lead to the downfall of the whole thing. (as the exceeding gang violence lead to more innocents getting caught in the cross-fire and hence stoking public sentiment against Gangsters, especially after the Prohibition got lifted and alcohol started to flow legally again. )
