    I wonder what the purpose is? Like, it's clear that anyone who knows what the garments are would know they're either not wearing them or not wearing them correctly. So is it just supposed to be a kind of propaganda for non-mormons, to draw them in by implying "see? We're not that strict! We're modernized!" even if it's not true? It can't be for other mormons, right? Or do you think these aren't actual mormons and they are just influencers trying to profit off the trend?

    • @somebody-cs1uj
      @somebody-cs1uj Месяц назад

      On the nose, pretty much. Mormons are in a weird place where they want to feel like they're "in this world but not of it" - that they live in the real world but believe their 'true home' is mormon heaven and therefore they're too special to be vulnerable to things like immodest fashions - but their entire religion is ferociously evangelical and they want to be appealing by looking as 'normal' as possible. (See also, changing the Google maps image of Mormon temples to a cross to look more like any other church.) Mormon influencers want to look as normal and COOL as possible to appeal to outsiders.

      No. It's for Mormons. If you read The Next Mormons (fascinating peer reviewed study on trends in Mormonism and made with comparison in mind with one of the major religious surveys in the nation) you'll see that younger generations are wearing garments in away that suits their lifestyle rather than changing their lifestyle to fit the garments. The temple questions have also changed. I don't remember the wording. (I'm not active Mormon, so I'm not as into it as I once was.) But the question is more general than it used to be from what I understand. So you might even see people wearing just the tops and no bottoms or visa versa. Or buying the petite sizes, etc. My 6' 1" female roommate at the time would buy petite sizes. I didn't even know that was a thing, and resolved that the next time I bought garments I'd get that size too. (Also a tall girl here and no shorts were ever long enough for my tall sizing.) But, for me, there was no next time. :) I stopped going.

      Oh, people trick their gods all the time. In Germany we have the term "Herrgottsbscheißerle", which means God-cheater. It is a kind of dumpling made of pasta dough filled with meat. People thought that if they hid the meat in dough, they could eat it during Lent without God seeing that they were breaking the rules. Drinks like Irish coffee or Frisian "Pharisee", German for Pharisee, were invented to hide alcohol from God and churchmen. Since 590 AD, Catholics are not allowed to eat meat during Lent, but they can eat fish. The Council of Constance (1414-1418) ruled that everything that lives under water is considered fish. Catholic monks took advantage of this and ate beavers and otters. People started drowning pigs in fish ponds and serving them on the grounds that if it comes out of the fish pond, it is a fish. And one person is said to have made it even easier: an abbot had suckling pig served during Lent and when everyone was sitting at the table he blessed the meal and said "I baptize you carp!" But that seems to be just a legend :-)

      You can "get away" with it because it's the bishop that asks you if you wear your garments the way you are supposed to. All you have to do is answer "Yes." He can't do anything about it. So either they feel like they are meeting that requirement and answering honestly or they are lying about it. Or maybe a bit of both. But it's between them and God. So there's not really anything to "get away with" if that makes sense.

    My summer camps had rules about no shorts shorter than your fingertips. I was so salty, because I have unusually long arms. It was absolutely impossible to find them the right length BUT with the right waist circumference. We gave up and cut the legs off pairs of jeans so they'd be long enough. Waste of jeans, I tell you! 😭 It was so ugly 😂
    It just made me even more ashamed of my body and conscious I was "tempting" people who shouldn't be at a girl's camp or looking at a 10 year old anyway! 😭

    Something I've begun to suspect of most religious people is that they aren't _really_ as convinced of their faith as they try to let others believe. That's not to say that they're deliberately lying; I think they're trying hard to convince themselves that they actually believe, so much so that they can't even acknowledge _to themselves_ their own doubt. But, their behavior nearly always betrays that doubt, even if they can't see it. You're showing exactly what I'm talking about.

    First, let me say I see absolutely nothing wrong with what they're are wearing. However, there's that little part in the back of my mind that says anything from your elbows inward and your nose upward should be covered is offended that they think this is appropriate for how they claim to live their lives
    If they said it was a direct defiance because they think those apartments is silly or arbitrary or whatever I would get it but there's anything really going along with the garment but exposing skin that the garment is supposed to cover.

    In the early 1900's, the church made a statement that the long arm, long leg garment design was given by revelation to Joseph Smith and they were not to be physically altered. If you had to wear an outfit that didn't work with the garments, you should instead hitch them up so you can still wear them. I find this particularly fascinating because the church has dramatically altered the design of the garments from what Joseph Smith originally gave us, and now the church insists you shouldn't hitch them up or wear them differently in order to accommodate your outfits. What they really want is their members to obey them no matter what they say, no matter how ridiculous it is.
