What’s does the rebellion have the resistance doesn’t, leaders that actually tell their troopers that they have a plan and don’t hold it off till the last second
That's the problems with cell structures. Sometimes they are a good thing. Sometimes they kill people. The French Resistance had multiple occasions where they found someone in their organization who might be an informer and they were thinking about whether to kill them or let them go. Sometimes they killed them. They might have kept quiet or not have been an informer at all. It is difficult being in a Resistance and know who you can tell and who you cannot. Sometimes people die. Innocent people. Good people. What if they told everyone and there was a traitor in the fleet or they were bugged? The entire point of the movie was that good people can make catastrophic mistakes. Criticizing that is like criticizing opera for having too much singing. I don't know why critics of the movie can't say: "It wasn't the movie I wanted."
The resistance sounds like what would happen in the real world. Major powers ignoring a possible threat. It could also be said that way the first order came to be was like the rise of Natzi German and ther sudden rise to be a threat. What I don't like is that the resistance won. They had no major coordination between the leader and the people.
golong13 No kidding, I mean the existence of The First Order just doesn’t make any sense as it’s impossible for that large of a force to exist and continue to grow under the noses of everyone in the galaxy.

@@NhBleker Well, here I disagree. I agree that the story is very poor (I think they should have made the invasion more like the Thrawn-offensive in the old Trawn-trilogie, as a combined assault on political and military fronts who not overpwoer the enemy but simple keep him always under pressure, not AGAIN superweapons and a enemy who is much stronger than the "heroes" - but one who is smarter amd better prepared). But in old canon the Unknown Regions were also a place were a lot of things could happen unseen. The Empire of the Hand grew and exited for more than a decade after the fall of the Empire without knowledge of the New Republic, for example.
The difference is this. The Rebellion starts a mission: "All callsigns, report in" The Resistance starts a mission: "I got a message for yo momma" See the difference?
@@thisisafalseaccount105 Its the professionalism and attitude. While yes it was funny it was also unprofessional and that seems to be the theme for large parts of the Resistance.

“The rebellion, even in its earlier days, numbered in the thousands” Yeah... I thought that went without saying, there’s like trillions of sentient life forms in Star Wars, I’d expect the galactic rebellion to start with at a least a few thousand
but most rebellions start small and local, like the American revolution. mostly started in Boston then spread into the other colonies. but the sw rebellion was bigger because of the direct impact the Switch from republic to empire had and how drastically different it changed.
Could have been better actually and if they want an underdog story and make the new republic look like the underdog again they could have had made the New Republic Army be weakened through offensives or a coup d'etat by a dissatisfied general/first order insider or something in line with that. Personally I would have envisioned a Clone wars era magnitude of war where two powers go toe to toe with each other instead of the sequel trilogy we got.
@@Banzaiiii2223456 The prequel trilogy was being shit on by a lot of people so Disney decided to emulate the original trilogy instead. The sequels is what we got because of that. These days people speak of the prequels with such nostalgia, but I remember before the sequels there was little positive being said about them.
The rebellion actually had Jedi and people who knew what the Old Republic was like. The resistance seemed to still be fumbling around with nothing much.
@Dennis Galindez When you think about just how many Jedi existed prior to the Purge, to me it's not so surprising. Actually, the idea that they could possibly kill every Jedi at one time wasn't even feasible as assuming you weren't with the military or at the Coruscant temple, you would at least get warning.
Dennis Galindez just due to the shear number of Jedi during the Clone Wars, it’s very easy to believe that many would survive. It’s actually less believable to think EVERY Jedi was killed. As long as a Jedi wasn’t on the front lines or at the Temple, they had a very good chance of surviving. Order 66 was only effective on Jedi currently engaged in battle because they’re too distracted by the fight to react in time. And the Temple attack was successful because the Temple is where the Jedi would least expect to be attacked, especially by clone troopers and Anakin.
@@enjoyfanta9382 Factor in the fact that clearly, this would create a significant disturbance in the force, and it would make sense there would be a decent number of Jedi to survive the Purge.
@@enjoyfanta9382 I can see that for sure, which is why the ones see in the movie got no problems with. But like there would be a lot of Jedi out there that weren't in battle. Actually, shouldn't the Jedi at the Temple had sensed what was going down? I mean, it took time for Anikan to get over there and assemble the troops, right? I don't want to nitpick it, again doesn't bother me, just saying that there'd be a fair number of Jedi to survive. Which, if that wasn't the case, there'd be no need for Inquisitors.

@@gamerman782 I went with spear because they are not defending Alderaan, rather they are attacking the people that would cause Alderaan to happen again.

Ships for one thing. A resistance movement should have less then gradually build up. However a paramilitary organization like Leia’s should’ve had more from the get go.
I think the new trilogy would be better if the roles were reversed. The first order being a secret organization and the new republic being the leader of the known galaxy
They should really just adapted the old Thrawn-Trilogy, I would say. His campaign to bring the new Republic down was something unique - the Empire in the position of the underdog, in smaller numbers, but with strong ships, tactical superior and lead by a good commander. A offensive who hits without super-weapons (but sometimes with the illusion of them), which strikes not just the military but also the economy and the will of the enemy to fight on. If they followed that path the film would be better, i think (if they had the courage to show the antagonist not just as a bunch of screaming idiots).
@@marcbartuschka6372 Now if you really wanted your superweapon thing, I think that you have the Thrawn Trilogy condensed to two movies, but then right at the end the Emperor reveals himself, perhaps by destroying Hosnian Prime with Starkiller, though I think I'd just have him use the force as that would be more shocking/surprising. And then the third movie is Luke and Rey seeking out the reborn Emperor to defeat him before he can bring the Empire back. What the Resistance lacked was a strong, hardened exoskeleton to survive the First Order’s attacks as well as powerful pincers to strike their weak points and take control of the battle while crushing the opposition. Just my personal opinion.
I really think that they should have had different leaders or at least more, they had Leia and other veterans, they were good but they were used to the rebellion's fleet and their resources, they had the backing of entire planet's. The Resistance had none of that, they had weak and outdated bombers, little numbers and they just had no clear command chain. They should have spent more time building up their fleets and gaining weapons in secret, but they scratched together a small, under equipped, understaffed force and this was why they were so easily put on the run. The Resistance had decades to stay in secret, they wanted to be like the Rebel Alliance, so they should have been like the Rebel Alliance and stay in the shadows, build themselves up, then fight on semi-even ground.
What they lacked ? A competent and actually scary adversary ? Seriously, other than big guns, they don't pose much threat. No wonder no one believed in their attack
Which is sad because the First Order could be amazing and should be in a position to utterly dominate their enemies to the point that the Cylons on Battlestar Galactica would be envious. But alas, they're more the successors to the Spaceballs than the Galactic Empire.
Yeah, if someone were to show me footage of Hux and Ren, I doubt I'd really be that concerned either, particularly after their leader Snoke is killed so easily. Jeremy Jahns actually made a video about this that is really good. Highly recommend it.
FO was actually convincingly scary in FA, especially with Hux speech scene. If they had built more upon that, then it would've been able to properly establish a solid picture of the FO as a real threat. Oh, they have under-dogness alright. So much so to the point that there is no logical reason they should be able to beat the FO, making us pissed when there's a deux ex machina that lets the Resistance win rather than cheering at their hard won victory.
Hmmm. Disagree. The prequel trilogy has good design but really bad awkward writing. The sequel trilogy has some questionable choices but the story is better.
@Nerag So a rip off of an existing movie based purely on nostalgia factor and nothing more, a film which destroys every character in the story with it's contrary nature and extreme cringe tier humor, and a movie that is also a rip off of a pre-existing movie and is also pure nostalgia bait is better than a trilogy about how a pure-hearted boy who dreams of becoming a jedi and saving his fellow slaves falls into darkness and becomes the galaxy's worst terror? A trilogy about how democracy is subverted by the slogan of safety and order, little by little and is one of the most relevant stories today?
I don’t see how the resistance will succeed in this war with just military experts. Asking for help when your politicians don’t exist, and you’re seen as insurgents. Who knows how many politicians that were on their side survived. I can see the first order senators surviving the attack on hosnian prime. Mon mothma isn’t here and their precious last general is basically hated by the galaxy. Beside a imperial like faction kept somewhat order, the new republic have 0 power. The first order is literally having dominance political maybe, military strength. The resistance military minds and veterans no politicians.
It's actually kind of hard to believe the level of screwed the Resistance and Republic are in this war. Strategically speaking, the First Order holds almost all the cards and can easily obliterate their enemy's military capabilities. Politically you're also right, they've dismantled much of the support network for the Resistance and the remaining elements of the Republic will be friendly to the First Order. Individual systems may pose threat, but I don't know how long most of those would last in a protracted war.
The First Order lacks the forces and manpower to actually control the territory they have now taken. True, they have wiped out the leadership of the New Republic and this government had no military to speak of (every time the "peace" politicians disarm the Galactic Republic, it gets attacked and nearly wiped out after losing the outer rim to crime from lack of presence in the area. You think they would have learned after it happened the 3rd or 4th time) but there are several planets that do have forces that they could bring together to oppose the 1st Order and are very likely to since they have seen just how brutal and destructive they are. The delay in any allies showing up to join the Resistance is from the time delay on the entire galaxy trying to figure out just happened, how big is the threat, and was Starkiller Base actually taken out. That takes travel time, meetings with neighbors, and then marshaling forces to action. I could see this taking weeks, if not a few months, especially as the 1st Order starts showing up at undefended planets and claiming them. The trailer for the next movie shows this cavalry arrival moment. The real question after this is the government that forms after all this is finished being fought over going to keep a well trained and supplied military to ensure that every 50 to 500 years there isn't a galaxy wide conflict? That and will the Force be finally balanced again so that Force worshiping zealots don't cause massive wars again either? The answers in theaters soon...
@@KnightsWithoutATable You know, you raise something that I've actually been wondering and I can't seem to find an answer too; it's not unrealistic that the New Republic demilitarizes as that is how Republic lasted for previous thousand years. What I'm more curious about is the defense fleets around worlds such as Mon Cala. Sure the Mon Calamari might have opposed the Resistance prior to the destruction of Hosnian Prime, but I'd think in its aftermath, particularly knowing that Starkiller Base was destroyed, they'd be quick to side with the Resistance. And without the Supremacy, I can't imagine that the First Order, which as you point out is relatively small in comparison to the Empire or even legends the New Republic and thus even if they could take Mon Cala, it would cost them dearly. And I'm sure many of the important Core worlds would they own defense fleets as well. So I would assume that eventually, they would side with the Resistance. Though, considering how "well thought out" the logic for this universe has been, they will probably just reinforcements that appear out of thin air.
@@Aeradom2000 Sympathetic members of various system defense forces. The 1st Order is likely going to seize key production and supply facilities along with hyperspace lane junction systems by rolling into system with large detachments, threaten planetary bombardment, then take over governorship with a token garrison force and commander. The threat of annihilation from the skies should the populous cause trouble is how they will rule, especially since the fanaticism of the 1st Order lets them carry out this threat easily. This will not work on planets like Rodia and especially Mon Cala since they have militias and system fleets that are sizable. The real danger is that if they leave the 1st Order in control of the resource planets and the production centers, they will increase in size steadily and rapidly. It took them decades to build what they have now with almost no resources. With proper ship yards and the entire Galaxy to recruit their brainwashed storm troopers and support personnel from, it would only take them 5 years to have dominance tighter than the Empire did. Anything over the cycle time to train personnel and construct a cruiser in a ship yard slip and they will have become unstoppable. This would likely be a year to 18 months since they would put all resources into expanding their forces. That is a very narrow time to deal with them. Add in the possibility of an automated fleet of MK 1 Star Destroyers that they could get now and could use to blockade shipping and planets and the heroes down't have much time to spare. Common Sense, basically how the Empire and Alliance were separated in the Galactic Civil War. Many people, such as Iden Versio only knew the Empire as a peacekeeping organization which brought stability to the galaxy, even viewing Alderaan as a necessary evil to end the war. Others, like Wedge Antilles saw the Empire as a bureaucratic fascist organization dedicated to bringing pain and suffering to anyone who steps out of line, which by stepping out of line I mean anyone who stands quietly in line and gets arrested and/or shot randomly because of paranoia. Politics are confusing and fucked up on so many different levels, I'm surprised the people haven't started a revolution to just end politics altogether. Yeah pretty much. And I do get why Disney does it, as it's the safe option to sell merchandise as it's already been proven to work. That would be a bit harder for the casual audience to get behind I think as it's not so simple. The same reason why Germans can't chase off the stigma that Germans = Nazis despite the fact that most leaders of the various German state would have simply executed them post-haste. Irrationality. You know what else the Rebel alliance had? It wasn't just one cell, but many cells that eventually came together. Effectively the Resistance would just be one cell if this was back in the time of the Rebel Alliance. The reason it was as resilient in the beginning is that even when and if the Empire destroyed one cell, there was always another to take it's place.

Really liked your comparison of the two factions, and honestly, I think it's a fair statement. The Rebel Alliance was way better off than the Resistance is in the new era of Star Wars films. I'm interested to see after Episode 9 how the Resistance stacks up, maybe do a before and after comparison of what the Resistance had to the end of the Episode 9 when the faction faces off against the Empire/First order fleet from the Unknown Region. It would be interesting if say, a small Republic fleet/force had survived the First Orders attack and actually came to the rescue of the Resistance. Anyway, overall, a great comparison.
Good point on "the message". Rebellion had the message "You know the Empire. We're not like them.". While the Resistance has "Remember the Empire? They're still a threat.". Sort of a case of a call to arms and someone beating a dead horse, so to speak.
Blame whoever wrote that Mon mothma disarm the new republic ( who the fuck did that ) .. star wars legends still view the empire as a threat even when they break up into multiple warlords after ROTJ and maintain a large fleet and army to deal with any comeback

What’s does the rebellion have the resistance doesn’t, leaders that actually tell their troopers that they have a plan and don’t hold it off till the last second
That's a political movement operating as a covert organization.
And it only cost them nearly the entire resistance fleet and killing hundreds of men and woman who died waiting for a plan

All in and crush the 1st Order in a single battle is the best option.
@@Aeradom2000 Maybe that is the twist? Some people speculate that Empire fleet in trailer is in fact Republic ISD's (they supposedly have red stripes). Yeah pretty much. And I do get why Disney does it, as it's the safe option to sell merchandise as it's already been proven to work. I mean, let's say they did something out of the box, like an invasion from an outside force like the Yuuzhan Vong. That would be a bit harder for the casual audience to get behind I think as it's not so simple. It's the reason why we don't technically have Gray Jedi anymore, it's easier to market to kids the idea there are just two sides and that's it.
@@Aeradom2000 if the last jedi had embraced the idea of grey jedi it could've been really good. I was hoping that was what they were building up to but then they sort of just forgot about it
I hope we see some Republic era ships salvaged by the resistance, some Venators and Arc 170's.
Doubtful, designs are 5 decades old at this point. many ships like y wings and headhunters were so scarce 50 years later
They would be ancient by this point, i already find them using Y wings ridiculous as it is.
Or maybe some Salvaged CIS Ships
@@KaiserMattTygore927 Yeah but when it's all you can get your hands on.
These designs were already mostly antiquated by the time of the Galactic Civil War, let alone 30 years later

The fact that the new republic hated Leia doesn't really make sense to me. She was tortured by Vader and didn't even know he was her father until the end. Why would she fight so hard against the Empire if she was just gonna be like him anyway? Wouldn't she just join him?
The same reason why Germans can't chase off the stigma that Germans = Nazis despite the fact that most leaders of the various German state would have simply executed them post-haste. Irrationality. When someone is beyond horrific, you demonize them pretty fucking quick.
Vader was that bad as a person, which is seen with the Hitlers, an entire bloodline ended because of just one madman that shared the last name.
@L1qu1d S1lenc3r The same reason why the Germans are still dealing with that stigma. For the rest of the 20th century and a good decade of the 21st, they had to deal with the entire German equals Nazis speel.
Still doesn't make sense that people other than the core group would know. Since the only people who definately knew about Leia and Luke's father are Bail, Obi-wan and Yoda and all three of them are not gonna run their mouths off
@@controbot2557 All of them died before Leia found out that Luke was her brother and Vader was her Father. I'm sure Han, Leia, Luke, and maybe even Lando would know about it. Or perhaps Luke had to tell the rebellion about everything but I just don't think people would view Leia as a threat like that. She was down in the trenches with those same people in the civil war era.
They had dozens of interesting scenarios how to continue the main plot of this conflict.. and they choose the Evil space imperialists vs rebels setup all over again.. for what? For cheap nostalgia? I have seen better non canon fanfictions than this current concept..
This has Disney written all over it as what would be more marketable than just rehashing what they already work? It makes more sense from a business perspective than doing something like the Thrawn Trilogy or the Vong invasion. Not as many merchandising opportunities in either of those cases. These people didn't even have the balls to blow up Coruscant.
They didn’t even have to be that creative with the sides. They could’ve just had:
New Republic= Big Fish
First Order= Small fish
That way they could still keep the ol’ major power vs small enemy, just have the protagonists be on the big boy side
The rebel alliance had a whole lot of support becuase the galaxy saw and felt all the evil the Galactic Empire was doing, while the first order hid in the unknown regions and build it self up the whole galaxy thought they were just a small group of imperial loyalist, while the resistance tried to expose the first order which had little effect and while they had New Republic backing it was really small and had outdated and slow ships and most of the galaxy thinks their dead from First order propaganda and most planets would not support them out of fear that their star system or planet would be destroyed. Great video
"Most people were pretty much undecided"
Sounds like how Disney has approached creating Star Wars movies.
What the resistance lacked that the rebellion had?
Me: For one thing a better name... I am truly surprised Disney did not name them the Resisty or something. (I am aware Resisty exists in Invader Zim)

Effective command and backstory, like I thought they were the militia of the new republic, why are they called the "resistance" when the First Order is the breakaway faction?
I WAS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SHOW THIS BECAUSE IT WOULD'VE BEEN EPIC FOR THE NEW GOVERNMENT TO FACE OFF AGAINST THE EVIL FO INSTEAD OF HAHAHAHAH THIS PLANET GO BOOM BOOM WITH RESOURCES AND SHIPS WE AREN"T EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE
Templin's interpretation of the Resistance made much more sense imo.
The Resistence lacked any form of writting cohesion. Ending up with a bunch of great ideas that just never went anywhere.
I noticed that Lego Anakin’s starfighter on the shelf behind you, good set, oversized for the figures but it has to be for kids to play with
It can be modified to have better proportions.
Someone made a video about how to do that with Obi-wan's fighter, and looks like both sets are pretty much the same built
Ok but what about the fact that after episode 8 they got more ships, more people and more allies fighting against the first order?
Plot armour.
@@notawarcultspy8994 Even bigger than Rebellion had
@Dennis Galindez Not necessarily. A power play like that would have the exact opposite effect. Who would want to fuck with someone who could wipe out an entire system?

Admiral Gender Studies
Just a reminder that Leia was a much better female lead than Rey.
Resistance: *This(Different unique fighters)* brilliant. But I like *this(Same but different X-Wing fighters that Rebels used).*
X-Wings were perfectly serviceable fighters, they can jump Hyper Space without being attached to a transport, making much of their effectiveness. X-Wings are also pretty maneuverable and fast, and they have shields, something Tie Fighters lack
Allen Rosales pretty sure it is obsolete by this point
Just Noob It may have been obsolete, but why throw something that has proven it can be just as effective?
The US Army still uses the M2 Heavy Barrel 50. Cal Heavy machine gun, which was in service since the 1920s because it was effective and reliable, same goes for the X-Wing
Allen Rosales I mean it is so obsolete that it should’ve been for collector by this point and New Republic got a better and cooler design one, like biplane to modern warfare obsolete
The problem with the Rebellion is they restored the Republic to how it had been before Palpatine...completely, with no fixes to the MASSIVE problems that let the Empire come into being in the first place. While the Sith had helped they barely had to do anything, the Republic was rotting to begin with. So small wonder everything went to shit so soon after the Epire was disbanded and the New Republic came about.
It's called 'Old World Blues' mate, where people basically go forward by walking backwards. Much of the Alliance has this particular mentality... and it screwed them over.
Same thing with Luke's new jedi order. Why give people an emotional safety net when you can do exactly what ruined the old jedi and keep people from their loved ones?

"What did they lack?"
Me: Better uniforms
Rebellion: Has a proper army and the best characters such as luke skywalker, han solo and chewbacca
Empire: Epic boi darth vader and a master manipulator emperor, with a huge army
Resistance: Has terrible bombers, wasted character that had so much potential and chance of being the main character (im talking about finn) but no they have a girl that dosent even deserve being a jedi
First order: Emo boy with anger problems with a laser sword with bad army
Really liked your comparison of the two factions, and honestly, I think it's a fair statement. The Rebel Alliance was way better off than the Resistance is in the new era of Star Wars films. I'm interested to see after Episode 9 how the Resistance stacks up, maybe do a before and after comparison of what the Resistance had to the end of the Episode 9 when the faction faces off against the Empire/First order fleet from the Unknown Region. Haha, maybe we will see a return to the Rebel Alliance once again, but it's all up in the air. It would be interesting if say, a small Republic fleet/force had survived the First Orders attack and actually came to the rescue of the Resistance. Anyway, overall, a great comparison.
Yes still some of the fleet yet guarding the borders, though unknown how many are left once the First Order started moving their ships in.
"What the Resistance Lacked that the Rebellion Had" a good trilogy
Good point on "the message". Rebellion had the message "You know the Empire. We're not like them.". While the Resistance has "Remember the Empire? They're still a threat.". Sort of a case of a call to arms and someone beating a dead horse, so to speak.
"What did they lack?"
They kinda lacked more fleet ships and more faster bombers, the ones they used are literally hot air balloons but tesla truck
"Showing us that where one urinates is equally as important as who they're urinating on."

Your initial analysis is correct. The Resistance is a cheap copy of the Rebellion. The whole point was licensing for Bad Robot/JJ Abrams. Here's hoping that Lucasfilms does the right thing and the first few minutes of Rise of Skywalker is the New Republic navy curb stomping the First Order.
Wait! The Resistance has a Mary Sue on their side though!
It seems something is seriously lacking in storytelling, characterization, and possibly understanding humanity if it's found necessary to have everyone else in the world being kind of dumb in order to make the heroes (and villains) look good by comparison. There's a whole lot of stupidity and crassness in charge in the actual world right *now,* and ...that's hardly inspiring a lot of great stories or even great art, just a lot of cynicism and darkness.
Agreed
@@justyouraveragem4a136 Yaknow, even to the point of it seems even fandom has a bunch of kids who think it's trendy to root for the bad guys cause 'everything's been made stupid.' ...but they're too young to remember what it was like before anyone was 'woke' on any kind of level. Alan: what the resistance lacked that the rebellion had
me, an intellectual: good fucking writing
Crazy how this 12 minute video explains the first order and the resistance better than the movies did
Doesn’t matter who had what.
The Grand Clone Army of the Republic outranks them all.
Experience outranks everything
And when the reconquest of the rim happened the CIS Propaganda was actually right
I think the first mistake was that they just assumed they won after Jakku despite numerous imperial leaders and assets were still unaccounted for.
They lack serious backing
The resistance was formed out of the confidence built after the fall of the empire. They didnt take the warnings, and didnt do enough research into what they were doing. They assumed it would be just like the previous war and didnt consider their real options. If it weren't for Ray's sheer force ability and the clumsy weakness of kylo ren, sheev would have won before anyone even knew he was still alive.
What the Resistance lacked that the Rebellion had:
*S P U N K*
An Aesthetically more pleasing military
I don't know how you can say that as the militaries are pretty much the same, particularly in the new movie coming up it seems.
