I know Mark Cohn is Jewish. That makes the line, "Are you a Christian, Child?....M'aam I am tonight". An extremely powerful line.....it was completely truthful.....he was so moved he was transformed to the place, the time and the people.......POIGNANT, POWERFUL AND TRUTHFUL
@@ryanw3658 I wonder what country his ancestors come from. I mean like what countries in Europe, is he Ashkenazi Jewish? So then does he have Eastern European roots?
This live performance is a great example of a guy who has faith in his song, way beyond any commercial consideration. I saw him recently, and he still makes it new and relevant. Well worth going out of your way to see him!
Just saw Marc Cohn for the first time tonight after enjoying this song for decades. He’s got so many great songs! Well worth going to see him if you can.
I remember hearing this on BBC radio one and the next Saturday i went to Fab records in Finchley, London and buying the cassette. Still have it and love listening to Marc Cohn.
You know, my father absolutely loves this song. When I was little, I’d hear it when he put it on, but since I didn’t know anything about Elvis, Memphis, Gospel, or anything like that, I didn’t really “get” this song. When I was about 18/19, I heard this number, and I finally got it!
Real story from him: he is actually jewish and didn't know any of the christian hyms she was singing, untill she asked if he knew Amazing Grace , which he blew the audience away with.
@Randall Svihla lol I find it funny how people feel the need to correct other people's writing. Like they are presenting a book to them, and their are proofreading their work...this is the internet.
Fabulous voice! He really puts the words across with so much expression. He reminds me of Joe Cocker and Michael Bolton.....with just a piano accompanying himself. What an amazing performance.....
One of those songs, that the first time I heard it, I knew was a classic, and would always be a favorite of mine. I'm now 70years old , and that hasn't changed. Thank you Marc , for the good feelings, your performance of this song has given me over the years. From New Zealand / Aotearoa. Arohanui .
I grew up at the end of the 90's listening to Marc Cohen, Uncle Kracker, U2, Bon Jovi and The Goo Goo Dolls. Yes I know they are all not of that generation but that is what music I listened to. I would rather have them perform any day then the crap we here on the radio today.
Most people don’t even know ow who this guy is. I remember when the song came out always one of my favorites does one create such a masterpiece of them disappear. The soul in this guy’s voice is unreal.
'There's a pretty little thing, waitin' for the King down in the Jungle Room'. That’s got to be one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Totally missed this.
This is truly a very powerful song. His lyrics are so good (IMO) that he almost puts one in the moment, in other words i feel like im there at Graceland. So well done, WOW!
Just got back from Memphis--Stayed at the Peabody (watched the ducks march and swim in the fountain) Beale St, BBQ, and carriage ride. Can't beat it. Next time will see more. My feet lifted 10 feet off the ground too.
This looks like Austin CIty Limits. Wish I could find the whole concert. I've seen "Fever" and it is a great finale. It takes guts to come out and play solo - and to vary the rhythm, timing and style of piano blues. What a musician. What a great career. Keep writing and playing, Mark. Love the new album studio videos!
I used to go to memphis alot to visit a friend of mine this brings back memories and it feels as if I'm walking in memphis again smiling and happy in the sunshine beside my old friends. . . . But do you really feel the way I feel? love it.
I'd be honored if some fans of acoustic covers would take a listen to my piano & vocal performances of WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Marc Cohn and PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael on my YT channel in tribute to 2 great classics of the late 80s/early 90s period. Live acoustic with no autotuning or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
Yes.....they are the only tools of trade that a true talent really needs.....the rest is them, their spirit and their soul....Marc Cohn has plenty of spirit and plenty of soul!
Saw the original broadcast of this Austin City Limits broadcast, and Marc's entire show was unforgetable. If you can find the episode this was from, do yourself a favor and watch it. His audience participation closing number is incredible.
Walking in Memphis Put on my blue suede shoes And I boarded the plane Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues In the middle of the pouring rain W.C. Handy, won't you look down over me? Yeah, I got a first class ticket But I'm as blue as a boy can be Then I'm walking in Memphis Was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale Walking in Memphis But do I really feel the way I feel? Your're right. Beautiful. Moving. Thanks for sharing. Irish K
Cohen is definitely the root of his last name. The priestly class.….hes like super Jewish. Good song fr tho.
@@ryanw3658 I wonder what country his ancestors come from. I mean like what countries in Europe, is he Ashkenazi Jewish? So then does he have Eastern European roots?
It's a crime that Marc Cohn didn't become a bigger star.
Probably as talented as Steve Winwood.
Maybe too talented.....
This live performance is a great example of a guy who has faith in his song, way beyond any commercial consideration. I saw him recently, and he still makes it new and relevant. Well worth going out of your way to see him!
Right on
There's no better way to say it Bill.
He believed in it I think.
One of the best first class ticket!!!!!
Just saw Marc Cohn for the first time tonight after enjoying this song for decades. He’s got so many great songs! Well worth going to see him if you can.
Something about black gospel. Even you aren’t Christian your human soul knows that God loves you as you are
No other instruments, no backing vocals, just the piano and Marc Cohn! So moving! 🎹 🎤
I remember hearing this on BBC radio one and the next Saturday i went to Fab records in Finchley, London and buying the cassette. Still have it and love listening to Marc Cohn.
That last bit he does on the piano just before the end kills me.
Awesome watching this again in 2024 when was this?
One of my favorite songs.
PURE CLASSIC WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG I THOUGHT IT WAS ACTUALLY ELVIS SINGING. THIS GUY IS MAGIC 👌♥️🇬🇧
You know, my father absolutely loves this song. When I was little, I’d hear it when he put it on, but since I didn’t know anything about Elvis, Memphis, Gospel, or anything like that, I didn’t really “get” this song.

Music!!! Thanks!
you listen as much as i do
That’s got to be one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Totally missed this.
One of the most touching songs ever written
I'm amazed by how good he is. Incredible
Favorite part!!!! "She said, tell me, are you a Christian child? I said, Ma'me I am tonight."
Real story from him: he is actually jewish and didn't know any of the christian hyms she was singing, untill she asked if he knew Amazing Grace , which he blew the audience away with.
It's funnier, because he's Jewish. Lol!
Not to be a pedant, but it’s “Ma’am,” not “Ma’me.”
Yes 😍😍😍🙌🏾
@Randall Svihla lol I find it funny how people feel the need to correct other people's writing. Like they are presenting a book to them, and their are proofreading their work...this is the internet.
This guys talent blows me away.
This looks like Austin City Limits, Thanks for this Post❤ John
Fabulous voice! He really puts the words across with so much expression. He reminds me of Joe Cocker and Michael Bolton.....with just a piano accompanying himself. What an amazing performance.....
One of the most emotional songs ever heard 😢❤
One of those songs, that the first time I heard it, I knew was a classic, and would always be a favorite of mine.
I'm now 70years old , and that hasn't changed.
Thank you Marc , for the good feelings, your performance of this song has given me over the years.

Wonderful......he is terrific.
I just love it that his voice is really as beautiful as in the official track. Proves even more what a great musician he is :)
Oh my god this is the most heart felt solo performance I've ever heard❤😊

Dan Pearce no, Barry Gibb is
I fully agree with you! He seems to be the best live singer especially in this performance!
Dan Pearce easy there fella
Truly talented man
No, Marc Cohn is. Maybe he hasn't seen those others. How can you debate this? Only he knows the best songwriter that HE has ever seen.
That's not autotune it's just talent
He plays piano like an angel. His shirt is also like an angel. And the couple's glasses at the end. Love this song. So So So good. Genius.
'There's a pretty little thing, waitin' for the King down in the Jungle Room'.
That’s got to be one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Totally missed this.

Beautiful song and I love the part of him becoming a Christian 💗
He's not. He's Jewish.
Awesome live version of an awesome song.
One of the best performances i've seen. Very smooth.
Marc Cohn und Cher zusammen: sensationell!!!
Great song, I love this song a lot.
It reminds of 2 other ones: Please come to Boston and Mandolin Rain.
Damn he’s good. One of best songs ever!!
This song is to amazing for words. My favorite verse: Touch down on the land of the delta blues in the middle of the pouring rain.

Simply magnificent.
Keys and a mic, live. That's it. Think about it
I know how that goes!
Amen to that, Andy. What happened to the bare bones, the stripped down to basics, the vulnerability...I miss it.
songstress250 it’s still around, you just have to know where to look these days
I'd be honored if some fans of acoustic covers would take a listen to my piano & vocal performances of WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Marc Cohn and PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael on my YT channel in tribute to 2 great classics of the late 80s/early 90s period. Barbara Bauer yeah, you don't because Marc is Jewish
Barbara Bauer Stupid comment.
Saw the original broadcast of this Austin City Limits broadcast, and Marc's entire show was unforgetable. If you can find the episode this was from, do yourself a favor and watch it. His audience participation closing number is incredible.

Old fashioned, brass balls piano man.
Me and the keys, standing right here.
Who does this anymore?
Beautiful.
Walking in Memphis
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy, won't you look down over me?
Yeah, I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be
Then I'm walking in Memphis
Was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?
Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered 'round his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing
Waiting for the King
Down in the Jungle Room
When I was walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?
They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But, boy, you've got a prayer in Memphis
Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said
"Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said "Ma'am, I am tonight"
Walking in Memphis
(Walking in Memphis)
Was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
(Walking in Memphis)
But do I really feel the way I feel?
Walking in Memphis
(Walking in Memphis)
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
(Walking in Memphis)
But do I really feel the way I feel?
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Flawless performance
So beautiful and somehow touching.
My best song in the world
