I actually won a ticket to this game on a Large French Fries. Got a free hotel room, a tour of the locker room and a Team USA jersey with my name on it. When he almost had that goal, the place seriously erupted. Louder than any game I've ever been to, and I went to the World Series one year. Thanks for the memories, LD and McDonald's.
I actually liked Klinsmann's move on not picking Donovan. It was a risk that paid off because our young players (with our older players) get to show their potential against great players from national teams like Germany and Partugal. The Donovan era is over. They didn't need him to make it out the group stage, finally beat Ghana, almost beat Portugal, give Germany a run for their money and almost tying Belgium in the round of 16.
@@jayh3283 Looking back, I'm sure you can see that Donovan was needed. The generation in 2014 were failures. Like why would select Wondolowski. Yedlin and Green were busts
No, they both (him and the staff) decided that he would only play 30 mins, because he had a game in two days that he needed to play in with the LA galaxy. He did end up playing around 40 mins though, so sad he wasn't able to score
Landon, I know you will see this. No USA player I have ever watched had the touch you had. Your goal AND assist tallies speak for themselves. You were the real deal and you represented the US very well whether you played on domestic or foreign clubs, or when on the USMNT. Few talk about your great soccer posture with with you exploited your center of gravity. And, lastly, please know that I moved from Athens US to the UK in 2014. I was extremely disappointed by your absence in the World Cup that year. We needed you on the pitch...especially against Germany and Belgium. I don’t even want to think about what might have been. It was a pleasure to watch you play. I also want to thank you for explaining to my fellow Americans that when our national team does not qualify for the World Cup, it is tradition globally to support one’s conference. For Americans, it’s Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and the rest of the CONCACAF. Thank you for everything! God bless you!
He was my American childhood star. I'm 17 now. He's the reason I went for the U.S. Sad to see him go. But now the U.S can look on to the future American talent.
You will be missed LD. Even though I am not American you inspire me. When the national team was in trouble you were the one that had more gutts and more determination than anyone else to take the team foward. Your courage and your character made you a leader and that is one of the things i liked most about you. And that leadership is something that nobody, not even Jurgen Klinsman, can take away from you. You deserved to go to the world cup!!!! You deserved to lead the nation!!!! Thank you Captain America!!!!!!
Even tho I'm a DC united fan and I was mad la galaxy won their 5th cup bc I hate la galaxy but I'll always have respect for the players especially Landon.....Congrats
No American coach would ever have left him out a world cup. But then again, Klinsman was not American and he would have never done that to any of his legendary partners in Germany. Him leaving Donavan out of his last well deserved world cup, will go down as one of the most unforgivable and despicable acts in world cup history.
Sacking him made no sense, but his coaching decisions before the World Cup and his decisions during that tournament were a big reason why the US didn't make it to at least the quarters.
The United States best player ever. Had grit and dominance for the game and it's team. He was the heart and soul of a Nation and I will never forget that Klinsman left him out of something he so truly deserved ,a last World Cup. God bless you Donovan and we will always be thankful for your best effort you gave on the field (10) a true champion
I'm glad they did this but looking back this organization did our golden generation so dirty. They didn't do this for Dempsey or Tim Howard. Just crazy. This organization abandoned the players that brought them success over on bad game that was caused by their mismanagement to begin with. Screw the guys over the USMNT from 2017-2019. Worst 2 years in the programs history.
... L:ogical and technical to score and pass the ball through while being the sober A:rquitech of a N:ever-ending support towards other D:irect fellow-players O:n the pitch and O:ut of it, and saying it O:therwise, he was a real N:umber nine plus one-outstanding player. (He is L. Timothy Donovan).
I feel more sad that he is the best thing the USA could create as a striker in history. He never won a CONCACAF Championship League, FIFA World Cup, Confederation Cup and Olympic trophy. Its time to create a premier league for the USA because the MLS suck at being a first division (if you can even call them that since there are no promotion and relegation and they are a franchise league). This is the last year I will watch MLS because I am starting to snap each time a statement by Don Garber comes out about the future of MLS.
Jin DuPre Soccer in America is nowhere near close enough to being ready for promotion and relegation. Nowhere near. All the USL and NASL sides would go bankrupt trying to compete. 25 years from now, we'll see. MLS isn't even 20 years old. Gotta give it time to grow. It's miles better than it used to be.
thank you... for what? A gold cup? There are guys playing in the Ecuadorean C league with more power, ability and class than Landycakes. Time for America to have the soccer hero it deserves. But for that, we need to get rid of MLS and place a promotion/relegation tier system that rewards good play rather than the stagnant shit we call a league right now.
Asalieri2 Your comment is so hyperbolic it's beyond ridiculous. Give respect where it's due. The guy might not have ever been world-class, but he was the best to ever suit up for the US, and has done more for US soccer than anyone will probably ever be able to do. There's a reason why more and more young American boys are starting to pick up soccer, instead of basketball and football, and it's because of Landon Donovan.
He could've stayed in Europe but he chose to play for the Galaxy. You clearly don't understand what defines a legend if you think 5 golden boots is the only thing that will get you there
Think we would've gotten farther with Donovan in the World cup, sad to see Donovan retiring, we'll miss you ;)
Unrealistic expectations

Deserved to be in the World Cup . Would have gave us energy like he always does . Oh well :(

+Jin DuPre I disagree with klinsmans move. Friendlies are for using your young players not the WC
if he was so bad why he was chosen as the best young player in the 2002 world cup???
He deserved to be in the 2014 World Cup. He earned it and we needed him.
@@jayh3283 Looking back, I'm sure you can see that Donovan was needed. The generation in 2014 were failures. Like why would select Wondolowski. Yedlin and Green were busts
Landon you are my hero i'll always remember you

Tottenham .Hotspurs
ooh yeah, all those goals against Concacaf's 'world powers' make it easy to rack up a good total.
Or perhaps in confederation cup to go all the way to the final?!?!
Tottenham .Hotspurs
confed cup is almost as worthless as gold cup.
Tottenham .Hotspurs well said
