Just want to thank you for taking the time to post the video, I wouldn't of been able to swap my grey e39 headliner to the black M5 headliner without it, 98 540i
Few of my friends owns a company that does this kind of wokr. seats, headlines, dashboards, steering wheels, almost everything you can imagine that is inside the car. Alcantara is one of the best way to give your car good look and some luxury. Great DIY, nice look with the mod. Congrats! :)
I used this video to do my M5 headliner. Thank you for posting! Just a suggestion that I used when re-installing it with one person. I used a few golf clubs to prop it up and then installed one handle with the screws to hold it up. Rolled all the trip over the headliner, unscrewed the handle and slid the headliner back slightly to hook the back into position. Then I slid it slightly forward and it was ready to for all of the pieces to be installed. Makes it very easy!
Man holy crap this is going to help me so much when I get my black healdiner. My e39s interior is all beige/grey and I am currently working to get it all black with the m5 silver trim, but this is going to help a lot! Thanks!
Hey, Having done this the past weekend on my 01 530i I need to note that BMW did many small changes. The 00 C-pillars are missing the screw holes behind the lights and the front most snap in peg doesn't line up, B-pillars are fatter so you need the matching lower pillar. A-pillars seem fine but I would just buy brand new so you can lock in the middle clip. I did notice that the (headliner) rear locking slit was smaller (shorter) my original and doesn't lock in so its just hanging there.
It seems like you knew what you are doing. I have a BMW 325i and my sunroof fabric tray is off track and now my sunroof is stuck in open position. Do you think I have to pull my headliner as well or is there any other short way to release the sunroof from the sunshade? Thanks
Also I found that the gaiter can be a pita, what I did was take a flat head screw driver and position it like this | and from the rear corner of the popped sunroof place it in like this | and lightly bump it against the gaiter.
Thanks for this, has been incredibly helpful in my swap. Side note-Not sure if it was removed by the PO but my early model (97) doesn't have the gaiters.
Hey bro can you tell me what's the headliner material that you used? On your bmw please I have a e60 and I wanna redo mine with the same headliner that you did it with.. Thanks
Great video, Colt. Looks really good! I see a door panel removed... New door panels in the future also? Also how far along would you say the car is for state inspection so you can drive it on the roads?
Thank you I just checked out the site pretty exspensive im going to try snd re upholster myself b4 I buy a whole new headliner. Thank you again for your quick response
Hi, You can remove the sunroof glass to remove the slider. First, carefully pull the gators (rubber accordion looking things on the sides of the sunroof with it closed) away from the sunroof, then remove the four screws on the corners of the sunroof. After you lift the glass out, you will see two screws holding the gators on, and under that are four screws for the slider. All screws are Torx, if I recall they are T20. Getting the glass back in is the hard part. You have to line it up in the front first (having two people for this REALLY helps), then screw it in and align it with the rear screw holes, ensuring it seals properly. It’s an easy job, just getting the glass back in is tough. Good luck! -Bobby
What's the torx size bit you used to unscrew 14 torx scew which are on the edge and connecting to headliner. I am looking to swap my Metal sunroof to a glass sunroof from a later model. Please advise the size of torx thing I need to buy?
I did a repair which required me to pull the sunroof cassette. My bolts were T20 (I believe). Also remember to disconnect the four sunroof drains at all four corners of the cassette. -Bobby
Thanks, man, your video helped me ALOT! Just one question - does all those clips and screw places are the same on my e39 98' just as it is on your e39 01'?
I purchased a 2001 e39 black alcantara headliner, looking at the position of the recessed spots for the o-crap handles they seem to sit forward about a half inch more than my 97 540i and the handles aren't as long/wide the m5 hanldes are a little shorter. I'm concerned that after trying to put in the new handles won't be able to mount because the mounting position will possibly be covered by the headliner, unless the mounting points can be adjusted. I would hate to take everything apart to find out the handles won't mount. The front pillars are SRS mine aren't, not sure if this will be an issue also. Wish I could converse over phone with someone about this.
@@robertdesousa6546 To the best of my knowledge, the grab handle location on the E39 never changed. I would honestly be surprised if it did, or if the handles changed themselves. I just looked up the handle part number. It says it is used from 9/1997+. What its the production date of your car? The headliner part number also changes in 9/97. I've never worked on an E39 older than 10/99 or so, so perhaps the super super early ones did have a different location!
Great, simple Q pls , I want to replace a metal sunroof for a glass one on my e39, do i have to take the glass off the new cassette, or just put the cassette from inside the car as it is, coz its fully functioning.
Hmm, I have never seen an E39 with a metal sunroof! I would imagine that the whole cassette needs to be replaced, but maybe it is just the different panel. Check the cassette part numbers on RealOEM and see if they changed.
Thanks for reply, I did that and its different parts no. its the European old style metal, I asked and the mechanics said its same base, just switch cassettes coz holding mechanism is different, but I saw your video and noticed that you took off the glass before removal so I wondered why, just for easier repair or is it the method for installing the new cassette, ok if you want to replace the cassette with a complete new one, no repair, would you remove the glass first or just take and replace the cassette? thanks again
This video was submitted to us by a user that no longer does BMW content. I think in order to remove the cassette, however, you do have to firstly remove the glass.
@@E39Source Hi E39 Source, I managed to do it, and now after one year testing after a bad winter season, as I promised I did a full detailed videos about the e39 sunroof metal to glass swab, listing part no differences, trouble shooting, etc., here is the link, ill be so happy if you list it on your great channel, all regards ruclips.net/video/6v-9dtBKp14/видео.html

For the reinstall without a helper use a bungee cord to help hold it in place. Use rags around edges to prevent any paint or body damage
holly crap!!!! what a job man. good work bro, this car is getting the renewed of a life time.

What if my moon roof has no glass and an automatic slider?
Thanks! This was hugely useful! Helped me to repair the sunroom on my '97 5 series!
Yes! Thanks so much! More videos like this please :D Maybe repairing the sunroof? Love these videos. They definitely help out!!!

Excellent video as always. You ever consider getting a friend to film you as you carry out the work?
Would be great to find such instruction for 84 733i (e23). Thanks!
Good job, but next time, when you mention screws can you say what size torx they take?
where can i buy that spray??
but i don't have keys :(

Where are you from??? Wouldn’t be NC would it. lol. 😆
Where did you get the materials?
M5 headliners are available from multiple sources. I have 5 for sale in San Diego.
Hey great video I am in need of a new headliner and pillars in my 01 330xi where can I get them?
I recommend ECS Tuning or sometimes, believe it or not, the dealer is most affordable!

Great video. Thank you. Does an E60 sunroof come in/out the same way?
+trevor j We would expect it to be.
DIY video coming on broken Sunroof fix. Thanx for this.

How are you removing the 14 screws on top of the sunroof? My sunroof is blocking 6 out of the 14, towards the rear.
You can move the sunroof still during this process.
@@E39Source Thanks man. I misunderstood your video. Very detailed, thanks.
my sunroof headliner is falling off, any recommendation on what type of glue to use?
I would probably try Loctite spray adhesive.
Thanks, man, your video helped me ALOT! Just one question - does all those clips and screw places are the same on my e39 98' just as it is on your e39 01'?
Yes, they should all be the same!
I have a E38 how did you remove the back screws Im having trouble taking them out without pushing the headliner down from the inside
Which back screws are you referring to?
+E39Source when your taking off the headliner and you take the screws from the sunroof and the ones from the back last 6 on mine are a pain in the ass
+Phillip Alfaro No idea, Colton produced this video and is no longer a part of E39Source. It should all be do-able from the interior though.
Do the o-crap handles mounting holes line up?? I have a 97 540i and want to this install.
Robert deSousa Yes, they will mount right up.

Well done, thank you.
Hi there, is it the same process for a E90? Thank you!
+LINDA HOWIE It should be relatively similar.
+E39Source oh thank you very much!
Hopefully the design on my 740i will be similar to this
It should be VERY similar, the E38 and E39 are brothers.
Alright thanks for the heads up, the idiot that owned the car before me put a stupid louis vutton headliner in the thing it is horrid.
Callum Duncan Oh good god. Well best of luck getting rid of that!
Thanks alot! *****
How do u do the the 2 front ones on the windshield do they like sell them somewhere separate or cuz I just wana do the 2 of them
The two front what?
+Bobby O'Hearn the 2 pillars on the windshield
+Affectam you can get them separately. Look at ECS tuning or RealOEM for the part number.
+Bobby O'Hearn yes I think they are called pillirs trim
+Affectam correct, the A pillar trim.
Mans throwing them gangsigns
