I like how you started out with a budget knife. I want a Garberg. I believe if Benchmade, Spyderco, or someone else made the same knife for the same price (or a little more) we would be raving about the value. Thanks
you should really look closely at the COLD STEEL FINN HAWK , it is a great knife with same steel as mora , and is really a full tang--scandi grind , at a great price point--i have 1 in each of my pack setups--a superior knife
Chris Gilliam I watched your video. I use mine as a large Bushcraft knife. I sharpened the spine for creating fluff and striking a fire steel. Great job on your video!
Thanks man, I sharpened the swedge on mine, but I don't bushcraft per say. I did just get a Schrade SCHF 2SM that I plan to do a survival type camping video with, once I get time. That should be interesting.
I have the Ka-Bar Turok knife and love that knife and the sheath so much. I also purchased the BK2 also and love it, but it is difficult to get that knife out of the sheath.
Try the lionsteel m4 in m390 mate its a bargain and make it convex on the work sharp blade grinding attachment and its pretty dang good and keeps a damn wicked edge for a damn long time
I am wondering if you will add the Esee PR 4 once you test it. It could be the best non-custom Kephart style blade available. Love the Garberg as well.
Garberg is 14C28N not the 12C27N they use on all their other knives its a much better steel from my use.....holds a better edge and sharpens up awesome.
That thing is awesome. First its like wth am I going to do with that thing? It comes in and its like "I don't know what I'm going to do with it; but I LIKE it!" And the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 & 140 are awesome too! Has to be one of the best bang for the buck items around. Not pretty, but really nice working blades. Don't forget the leather sheaths, totally worth it!
Thank you for your videos. They have certainly helped with making choices (in this case) for the particular knifes, I wish to carry for EDC or when I can out into the woods!
Just wanted to mention that I know they have been around a little while, but the Gerber Strongarm and the SRK prices have come down to a more reasonable price. The only thing is again with the Gerber is the prices fluctuate between colors and fine or serrated edges, but the fine or plain edge black one is around $45 and so is the Cold Steel SRK. It's interesting how prices change between what you and other reviewers are told and then the initial release and during the Holidays it's anybodies guess.
Real good video. Not all of them were blades I would pick, but there was a very wide range which should have something for everyone. Hope you had a good thanksgiving, keep up the great work.
Could you please also note all the mentioned knives also in the description, the first is at least not listed.... Would help a lot! And please skip your "favorite templates", nice to know but very confusing! It would be better to keep favorites lists attached to vids with the same topics... just my 2 cents.
Because Aaron seems like a super practical and realistic guy. And that ability is close to useless unless you purposefully put yourself in that situation.
Compared to the Garberg, the Terava Jaakaripukko is, in my opinion, a much better value and a much better knife. Paired up with the Skrama, they make an awesome system for bushcraft and camp tasks, and together they're under $150 shipped.
Cässtrom and TBS knives hold the crown for being the best knives ... Cässtrom has also 14c28n steel for around €100 but the looks are wayyyy better then the Mora Garberg :D TBS knives: the same warranty policy as ESEE for the same price butttt a more bushcraft look + options between stainless/carbon steel + DC4 sharpening stone + hands down the best production knife leather sheath on the market !!
I noticed that you didn't try or test the esee cm6, I think this is an excellent combat survival knife designed by Terrill Hoffman an made by esee knives.
Say Heah Aaron, Great choices, I totally agree with you picking the S. O. G. Pillar Fix Blade, I love mine. But I thought you would continue with atleast Swamp Rat, I think everyone should have a Busse Combat Battle Mistress in their collection. But my Jungles and now the smaller version are my Rodent 9 and the Rodent 7, Infact I teamed my Rodent 9 with my Rodent 4 and my Rodent 7 with my Rodent 3. Infact I had Piggyback's made with both. I also love my Rodent Rucki which I side by side carry with my Ratmandu. You did good. Thanx for sharing, Dilly, Dilly.,,.p
The very best at batoning is the Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe, then the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. Just one whack and the wood is split. I wouldn't waste my time beating a knife over and over to get through a piece of wood.
Great vid. Would love to see more of Tommy, the pup, before the year is over. Haven't seen him in awhile in the vids. Is he on strike for not getting enough treats? LOL...............
Hey Aaron, what fixed blade would you recommend most that has premium materials, but is at a budget price of less than $100? I should add that I am in a wheelchair, but spend a great deal of time outdoors and I’ve always wanted a belt knife that carries well!
What do you consider premium materials? Is it the price or the performance? To me the best bang under 100 bucks are the knives from Varusteleka. The Terävä Skrama is a huge, heavy chopper with great ergonomics and a very decent leather sheath for around 100$. In terms of quality I would rate the carbon steel as a premium blade as the 80Cr2V is one of the toughest blade steels if it comes to impact resistance. It takes a very fine edge and holds it for quite a while. The stainless steel version is made of a 12C27 equivalent which I would rate as a good overall medium quality stainless steel. But I would prefer the carbon steel variant as that steel really stands out in terms of performance. If you don't like leather sheaths you can order the knife with just a plastic liner and have a custom sheath made. I really like that option for all Varusteleka knives as you don't have to pay the sheath if you're not planning to use it. It saves you like 30$ which you can put into your custom sheath. If you're looking for something smaller I would recommend having a look at the Varusteleka Terävä Jääkäripuukko knives. They are available in two sizes (110mm & 140mm) at the exact same price. They're made of the same two steel types as the Skrama and also available with or without a leather sheath. The blade design is that typical Scandinavian Puukko shape like on most Mora knives. But the blade is 25% thicker than the blades on the "bigger" Mora models (4mm vs. 3.2mm). The handle is rubber overmolded plastics, the handle ergonomics are great for any hand size. I got quite big hands (glove size 10-11, XL-XXL). To me the handle could be a little "beefier" (that goes for 97% of all knives) but I still love the way it fits my hands. The Terävä Jääkäripuukko knives are just fun to use, very similar to a typical Mora knife, but made for "real men". Of course those knives are not your typical "premium" looking knives for the average user. But I personally love their design. It's simple (to keep the price low) but effective. I love that rough, unfinished blade design (the black color is not coated, it's the remains of the hardening process like on those expensive "Classic" Scandinavian axes from Gransfors Bruck or Hultafors). Those knives are tools made of high quality materials to be used, not to be looked at. I for myself love that style and think they look great. But I also love the looks of a Glock pistol and would prefer them over any nickel plated sissy pistol at any time. :-) If you're looking for a ~4'' companion knife and don't like the tool character of the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110, you may also have a look at the Mora Garberg. The 14C28 stainless steel is a good performer but still not one of those very expensive "premium steels". But if you're looking for something made of those "super steels" you won't find anything within your price range of under 100$. It's not like those steel types were really THAT expensive, but the knife makers ask an extra extra premium price for those knives because people pay them.
I love your channel and videos but you’re starting to make me feel that my Cold Steel Master Hunter is a little out of date. It’s 10 years or more old and believe it or not I’ve been to 3 continents with it and and used it for EVERYTHING. Would I really see that much improvement with the new steel today in these newer knives you’re recommending in this video?
Well I had decided on a skrama, until you talked up the yacare. So between the 2 which do you like? I would pair it with something like a mora bushcraft
I like the Turok but I broke the tip with even milder prying than you did in your review. It was about my tenth pry action in some basic privet wood and my first time using it on a hiking trip. Wood was fairly soft too...semi green. I sent it back to Kabar from overseas..cost me about $35. At least they replaced it and paid shipping back. Still it cost me 1/3 the price of the blade. Love the design and sheath but I have that element of hmmm...not sure I'd trust it in that dept again hence not my ideal survival knife, besides I can't afford those shipping costs again for the warranty. It surprised me to no end. I have the Choppa too and haven't pried with it but it should be fine with a more robust tip.
blue heeler66 It would lend itself to those steels but like my Honey Badger, even though thats in 3v it still has a very robust tip. The Turok has quite a thin tip and I'd like to see it a bit more robust to call it a Survival/bushcraft knife and not just more of a fighting knife.
blue heeler66 Everything else about it is perfect once the scales are wrapped with Hockey tape. Micarta or G10 scales and the more robust tip would make it
Hi thank you for all the great information as always I was just wondering if you ever get rid of the gear you test I just started a RUclips channel and would love to work with you thank you and God Bless you
At 7:04 you state that the S35VN is easier to sharpen than the aus8????? Are you sure about that? remember you are recommending that knife to be combat knife, soldier knife, (sharpening in the field, probably with small stones or similar) and you are stating that it it easier to sharpen that aus8, you know what carbides are right?
Im sorry but i don't think that is possible.Maybe you have a problem due to the "soft" aus8 so you can't get even edge,bt, sharpening and resharpening simply can't be easier on s35vn vs aus8, you know it is physically impossible.
No offense, but based on his statements in various videos, this gideons guy generally is not very knowlegable when it comes to knife steels and how they behave during sharpening and use.
That at least, but s35vn is carbide steel so when you sharpen it with stones or similar that is softer than carbide, you cut the steel but the carbides are more exposed so eventually the should "fall/brake" of, I'm talking on a micro level, so you get the elusion of micro cracks on edge it self, remember I'm talking microns here. That is the reason why this steel (s35) performs the way it does, because when your edge dulls carbides act like a saw on the very apex of the edge and expends the life that you can use your edge. But honestly i don't think he knows anything about this, he has become just another seller, and ignorant seller, because i don't know how he can make a statement like that, would like to see what would happen to him if he wrote something like that on "blade forums". The thing that annoy me the most is his ignorance, he does this for living and not for hobby, but he doesn't know nothing about the steels, he doest even know if the sheet of the knife he sales you is kydex or polymer, i bet if he bought that knife that he would know what material sheet is made of...
Very nice, looks like some really good knives here. It was nice to see that you included budget friendly blades as well. I am a new sub. I have heard your channel mentioned by some of my subs and those who I am subscribed to as well so I had to come take a look. You have some great content here. I have a newer channel where I like to show affordable quality gear and encourage people to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.
Fortress Europa The idea is “if you only had one tool”. One of the best books written is Hatchet, by Gary Paulson. A boy alone in the woods with only a hatchet. He created his own world with the hatchet as his only tool. Go ahead and carry a hatchet or camp axe around with you. They are the ultimate multi-tool for survival. Or carry a knife around that can mostly do what a hatchet does but doesn’t create such obvious carry problems as a hatchet. (Carrying a hatchet may even get you labeled as a gang member (fucking fbi))
No Tops Brakimo...? I acquired a few fixed blades this year, The Tops knives Brakimo, my new favorite; the Tops Overlander 2, also really great; the Cold Steel SRK- VG1, was a good blade, but was kind of boring to use so I sold it; and the Tops B.O.B., which I was really disappointed in. So out of the ones I bought this year, the Overlander 2 and the Brakimo to the W. That Brakimo, man, it's a real performer. That's why I'm a little surprised that it didn't make your list. Anyway, another solid video. Peace.
They are available at bladehq, knivesshipfree, and dlttrading. That is when they are available. Peter is producing batches around 300 at a time every few month and they sell out in under 5min usually. He makes some of the most amazing blades, if you are really set on one, go become part of the dark timber brotherhood Facebook page and following him on instagram so you can get up to the minute updates of when the next batch drops.
TShull I don’t like hearing Fix plays for EDC, but if you’re totally set on that the white river backpacker, or the keyboard globetrotter are awesome Knives
Love going back over these older vids.
Hey man it's cool to go back in time and look at the knives you hyped up lol
I like how you started out with a budget knife. I want a Garberg. I believe if Benchmade, Spyderco, or someone else made the same knife for the same price (or a little more) we would be raving about the value. Thanks
Surprised the Strongarm wasn't on this list. I know its a beloved knife on this channel, and rightfully so.
you should really look closely at the COLD STEEL FINN HAWK , it is a great knife with same steel as mora , and is really a full tang--scandi grind , at a great price point--i have 1 in each of my pack setups--a superior knife
Picked up a Turok and I'm loving it! Thanks for your great work! Can't say enough good things about that blade!!!!
Timothy Jones I have one too. I even reviewed it. Don't use it much tho, my RTAK is my main blade these days.
Glad you mentioned the Garberg.
+1 for the Skrama
The Terava 110 another from that same stable.
Yes, I have the Jääkäripuukko 110 and it is awesome
Just ordered the Pillar, cant wait
I have the Ka-Bar Turok knife and love that knife and the sheath so much. I also purchased the BK2 also and love it, but it is difficult to get that knife out of the sheath.
Can you try some of the casström knifes like the woodsman and the nr10 Swedish Forrest knife
For me the coldsteel master hunter in vg1 would easily be on this list
Garberg is 14C28N not the 12C27N they use on all their other knives its a much better steel from my use.....holds a better edge and sharpens up awesome.
Airik1111 cool beans
The Mora Garberg's steel is scanvic 14C28N stainless steel not 12C27N.
A slightly better steel than on the other Mora stainless steel blades.
You should review Tops Knives Apache Falcon and Zero Dark 30
The ESEE junglas 2 reminds me of the condor Moonshiner and Moostalker!!
Great to see Skrama made it to the best of 2017.
Great informative video. Very clearly presented and summarized. Keep up the great videos and enjoy the CO weather!
Excellent. Thanx for testing the blades
Those are some solid picks Aaron. I can vouch for the Skrama, the Garberg and the 1911 as absolute must buys.
If I didn't know any better I'd say you're in Colorado. The houses look like what we see there
Dude your a legend thanks fo r finding the time to do that video
Im impressed the SOG can cut thru paracord.... amazing
you never show if the knives can throw a spark with a fire steel.
Because Aaron seems like a super practical and realistic guy. And that ability is close to useless unless you purposefully put yourself in that situation.
Steve Smith why is it useless ?
A lot more knife maker are making 90 degree spines specifically to strike a firesteel & produce tinder...
The Mora Garberg has a n excellent 90 degree spine as well as the pummel.
Thanks Aaron. Like your list. Sad you only had one “knife snob” item on this list.
Great list! I picked up the Kabar Jarosz Turok! I highly recommend it!
Brilliant video, thanks man. Hello from IRELAND
Rossa healy ,,, hello from Texas
Rossa Healy hello from the netherlands
Rossa Healy
Woodsman Whitesmith
Hope you had a great Thanks Giving!
Compared to the Garberg, the Terava Jaakaripukko is, in my opinion, a much better value and a much better knife. Paired up with the Skrama, they make an awesome system for bushcraft and camp tasks, and together they're under $150 shipped.
Are you going to be getting in any of the ESEE HM models in for review anytime soon?
Been waiting for this(: . Great vid and happy late thanksgiving
Great Video man. I love your recap videos you do of the gear you like and recommend. Your channel inspires me to make more gear related videos. Thanks
Thanks Aaron. Love the best of the year vids!
Thanks for another great video. I’m ordering the Cold Steel off of your link. Great budget banger 👍🏻
Great sales man
Best Chopper, Best Fine Blade?? Pick one of each... I'm looking to purchase, suggestions!
Thanks!
Great Vid.
For me I’d definitely take the 1911 it’s sick 3v semi custom 😍BOING SCHWING
You are always great and easy to learn from!
I would definitely get the 1911 if it was in 01 tool steal, I absolutely love that knifes look
Joe Lewis you'd be lucky to get it at all. Such limited runs
Good stuff! Thanks for the good work.
Cässtrom and TBS knives hold the crown for being the best knives ...
Cässtrom has also 14c28n steel for around €100 but the looks are wayyyy better then the Mora Garberg :D
TBS knives: the same warranty policy as ESEE for the same price butttt a more bushcraft look + options between stainless/carbon steel + DC4 sharpening stone + hands down the best production knife leather sheath on the market !!
From your years of experience, what would be the top 3 big knives for wood batoning?
The very best at batoning is the Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe, then the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. Just one whack and the wood is split. I wouldn't waste my time beating a knife over and over to get through a piece of wood.
Entrek 18 Bravo S.E.R.E. Dedicated Fixed Blade Knife (5.875" Gray)
EnTrek Close Combat MKII Knife D/E Tactical Fixed Blade (7" Black Plain)
EnTrek 11 Bravo Fixed Blade Knife (4.75" Bead Blast Plain)
EnTrek Forester Knife Fixed Blade w/ Micarta Handle (3.5" Plain)
EnTrek Destroyer Large Fixed Blade Knife (8.75" Bead Blast Plain)
Great vid. Would love to see more of Tommy, the pup, before the year is over. Haven't seen him in awhile in the vids. Is he on strike for not getting enough treats? LOL...............
Wanted to know your take on the BUSHCRAFTER KUKRI and TOPS TOM BROWN TRACKER 3?
The gi tanto has strange ergos. The handle stops before the choil and then the weird blade stops get in the way.
Kizlyar supreme sturm in cpm4v is a great knife too👍
Are we getting the usual annual vid to see what is still in your rotation from 2016?
Hey Aaron, what fixed blade would you recommend most that has premium materials, but is at a budget price of less than $100? I should add that I am in a wheelchair, but spend a great deal of time outdoors and I’ve always wanted a belt knife that carries well!
Nick Lind what size? Gotta be a lil more specific
If you're looking for a ~4'' companion knife and don't like the tool character of the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110, you may also have a look at the Mora Garberg.
Excellent video!
good video. hope you enjoyed your holiday Aaron.
I love that you mix mordern videos with knife videos and are not like "yall know when i was 5 i got a knife abd it saved me from a bear"
If it works for you, stick with it brother!
Cold Steel Master Hunter in CPM 3V
Well I had decided on a skrama, until you talked up the yacare. So between the 2 which do you like? I would pair it with something like a mora bushcraft
Matt Klaus yacare if I had to choose
Ohh i get it now ,its a comercial add!!! AHahahhahhaaa
GI tanto is good knife . I dont know why people not recommend it for bushcraft ??

Hi thank you for all the great information as always I was just wondering if you ever get rid of the gear you test I just started a RUclips channel and would love to work with you thank you and God Bless you
Nice video!
Another great video. Thank you very much. Could you make a review of Kizer Salient E613 please? (fixed blade, 1095 steel)
Marek Beneš u still waitn ?
Thank you for the reviews
Always be closing, especially on Black Friday!

ikarus1415 Yes I own both the aus-8 seal pup elite, and the pillar. The pillar is easier to resharpen.
Im sorry but i don't think that is possible.Maybe you have a problem due to the "soft" aus8 so you can't get even edge,bt, sharpening and resharpening simply can't be easier on s35vn vs aus8, you know it is physically impossible.

S35VN is 58-61 rockwell, Aus8 is 57-58 - pretty sure heat treat alone could be the difference in ease of sharpening.

Love my Pillar!
Does anyone what knife is pictured in the thumbnail?
i would like you to review Chris reeves Green Beret and Pacific
great review, thanks
The SOG Pillar is over £250 in the UK. Too much!
7:42 YA- KAH-REH, is how they call alligators in the amazon and south america.
My phenomenal large hands
Hey u should consider looking at blade hq for your knife they have the best deals
They wont pay him for shilling like Amazon will.
I think he is a vampire hunter due to all these stakes being cut
Esee Junglas: "It's much easier to make feathersticks with", but your feathersticks still look like shit. Same with the Turok.
I order a cold steel srk after one of your video, and you dont mention it in this video …
Damn son !!!!! Take a breath every now and then,. And lay off coffee for a while. Cut back on the candy bars and get more sleep !!!!!!!!
Hi. Which is the link for the skrama.
Hey what is your take on the MSK-1

breathe and squeeze 😂😂😂
How you been man? You know they deleted my channel right?
Where are these hyperlinks u speak of?
Very nice, looks like some really good knives here. It was nice to see that you included budget friendly blades as well. I am a new sub. I have heard your channel mentioned by some of my subs and those who I am subscribed to as well so I had to come take a look. You have some great content here. I have a newer channel where I like to show affordable quality gear and encourage people to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.
I dont get chopper knives. Why not just use a hatchet? Its much more efficient.
Did you try a steel will roamer 5.5" yet?
No Tops Brakimo...? I acquired a few fixed blades this year, The Tops knives Brakimo, my new favorite; the Tops Overlander 2, also really great; the Cold Steel SRK- VG1, was a good blade, but was kind of boring to use so I sold it; and the Tops B.O.B., which I was really disappointed in. So out of the ones I bought this year, the Overlander 2 and the Brakimo to the W. That Brakimo, man, it's a real performer. That's why I'm a little surprised that it didn't make your list. Anyway, another solid video. Peace.
Steve Smith
Brakimo is an outstanding knife. It is my edc. It has replaced every knife I own under six inch blade length.
Where can you find the 1911 what is the link please someone help
They are available at bladehq, knivesshipfree, and dlttrading. That is when they are available. Peter is producing batches around 300 at a time every few month and they sell out in under 5min usually. He makes some of the most amazing blades, if you are really set on one, go become part of the dark timber brotherhood Facebook page and following him on instagram so you can get up to the minute updates of when the next batch drops.
skrama...the one and only...
Love those vids!
I'll take two of each!
Team Finland is happy! Torille!
What do like for EDC fixed blade?
TShull I don’t like hearing Fix plays for EDC, but if you’re totally set on that the white river backpacker, or the keyboard globetrotter are awesome Knives
Hey, why a 1911 Elite over a Honeybadger?
What know is that in your hand on the thumbnail?!?! 😍😍😍😍
