Luffy didn't take a nap for plot reasons. It's because Luffy doesn't need a complicated excuse to help Nami. He doesn't need to hear a tragic backstory. He was just waiting for her to ask for help.

Luffy choosing to take a nap is a narrative device to keep him out of the story but it's also showing his character. He's great a judging ppl for who they really are. So he didn't care to learn about her backstory because he already knew she needed his help but wasn't asking for it until she actually did. He was always set on helping her and wasn't gonna take no as an answer. That's why when she says "I thought I told u to leave" he just says "Yup". It's bkuz he knew all along she was worth fighting for and a great person whom he wanted as a crewmate. He's kind of dumb but he's extremely well adept w combat awareness. You'll see it more as u keep reading but it's very subtle for the most part

Someone from his friend circle has to explain it to him or he needs to read top comments because he completely missed the point of that plot line & completely misunderstanding luffy's character in my opinion.
This happens when we read very fast & just try to complete the story rather than understanding the nuances in the story. This happened to me in some Mangas which I read just to complete it.
But I agree that in East blue luffy was kept away from battles because he was just too strong.

The weight of the swords was meant to be symbolic. "Weight" is just a metaphor. Zoro is saying that his sword carries the "weight" of his dreams and aspirations. It represents his desire to fulfill the will of his deceased friend. While Hachi's swords carry no such weight and are just hunks of metal. That kind of thing matters ALOT in One Piece. Pay attention to stuff like that. Symbolism is key to understanding the narrative.

I loved Luffy from the first chapter, but I can understand some might not. To give you a bit of insight without going into spoilers, Luffy is very perceptive and emotionally intelligent individual. On top of that, he's someone that doesn't care about your past, just who you are and what you are trying to be. So when Nojiko wanted to talk about Nami's past, he straight up said he didn't wanna hear it because that wouldn't have affected his opinion about her. He ain't thinking but he is listening and observing.

Okay so yes, during the fight with Arlong, Luffy is taken out for plot convenience, however the other cases you mentioned are not that way.
Luffy is very good at reading people. He tends to know what he needs to do for a person, and at that moment there was nothing he could for Nami, not until she asked for his help. Then, and only then, could he fight for her. That is why he took a nap because he couldn't help her yet, but he also refused to leave her.
Then later, he took a walk because he doesn't care about her past. He only cares about who she is right now. It was irrelevant in his eyes.

The Baratie arc was also about dreams and the spirit necessary to chase them. Which is why Mihawk vs Zoro is one of the most important fights for establishing this idea. It's also defining moment for Zoro's character. The man literally had not only his dream but his confidence and everything he believed about himself completely shattered but in stead of giving up this man finds the spirit to commit even harder to fighting for his dream. It's because of this spirit that Mihawk officially recognizes him as strong when he had previously dismissed him. Because the point was that even if you fail you need to spirit to put yourself back together when you are crushed. And no amount of equipment or special weapons is going to help you with that. Spirit and willpower are incredibly important in One Piece. Take note of that.

15:10 Ok, this is the thing with Nami, Nojiko and Bellemere. Bellemere was not a mercenary, she was a Navy officer. She was fighting on some war and the Navy, or at least her squad, was utterly defeated. She was about to die when she spots a toddler Nojiko carrying around a baby Nami among the corpses. That's a flashback you get within the flashback, that why the ages are inconsistent. Bellemere asks Nojiko about their parents, but hers died during the war, and she doesn't even know who Nami is, she just found a baby on its own in the aftermath of a battle. Bellemere decides it's not her time to die, pushes through her injuries, and returns to her town, Cocoyashi Village, where the present action takes place, with Nojiko and Nami, factually (but not legally) adopting them and defecting the Navy. This is when the thing with the pinwheel happens as well.
Then, when Nami and Nojiko are around 8-10, you see they are fucking poor, every single one of Nami's clothes is a hand-me-down from Nojiko, Bellemere only eats tangerines from their field, because she cannot afford food for all 3 of them, and Nami steals books on cartography because she wants to draw a world map. Little Nami gets angry because she wants money and throws a tantrum, which ends in "You are not my real mom" that leads to Bellemere to losing it and slamming Nami, who runs away. Nojiko goes after her, and this is the moment where the Arlong Pirates make their appearance. They arrive, take over the island, and demand 100,000 berries from every adult and 50,000 for every children monthly. Those who can't pay will die, or as they said in the 4Kids dub "If you can't pay the cash, you are out with the trash." Everyone in town knows Bellemere is poor and won't be able to produce 200,000 berries, so first they hope the fishmen will not notice her house, as it is removed from the village, but they see the smoke of Bellemere's cooking (making Nami's favourite meal as an apology).
They have Genzo lead them to the house. In the meantime, the village doctor manages to find Nami and Nojiko, and keeps them hidden in the woods, the plan is that, since Bellemere didn't legally adopt her, there are no documents of Nami and Nojiko even existing, they are going to put the girls on a boat and send them away, and no matter what happens to Bellemere, they'll live on. When Genzo and Arlong arrive to Bellemere's house, Genzo lies that the 3 plates are because him and the doctor were invited for lunch. Bellemere can produce 100,000 berries, which makes everything tie up perfectly in Genzo's head: She can pay for herself, and the girls are being sent away, nobody dies. But Bellemere says "fuck you fish-boy, the money is not for me, it's for my daughters, who I won't ever deny, even if it costs me my life" and gets shot in the face as a result.
At that point the girls have already revealed themselves, and the pirates found a map of the island drawn by Nami, so they take Nami away, and offer her a deal: "You will draw maps for us, detailing sea currents, and shit, and you will be provided with everything you need and pay you." Nami replied that she wanted the village to be set free, and Arlong agreed to sell it to her. They tattooed the mark on her, and she went back, pretending she was doing it only for the cash and things they were giving to her, which pissed everyone off. Soon they got to know about the deal she had made (probably the first time Nojiko saw her burying money in the tangerine field), but pretended they didn't, so that, if Nami ever decided she was sick of it, she could run away not knowing everyone had their hopes put on her.
That's basically what you need to get out of the flashback

Another thing that might help you understand Luffy: Oda said that Luffy is meant to be a Man of Action. Meaning that you largely interpret him through his actions. Thats why Luffy doesn't have any thought bubbles. Because if Luffy wanted to do something he wouldn't think it. He would have already done it. Or said it. So remember to watch his actions. Thats how you understand his character.

Boom, the small details are the WHOLE game. There's a lot of One Piece that's just plain text and a LOT of fan stuff that's meta - both very good. But for me personally, what blows my mind is how much care and thought is put in ( in a weekly series!! ) from the very beginning that all wraps up. I said it last vid but those are the moments for me when it all becomes bigger than the whole of its parts.
Keep up the great content - excited to see all the new manga content and one piece drops, personally excited to see you reach some of my favorite arcs and to see what you think.
P.S. I find your character journey so spot on to so many of my friends and I - we all read a ton of manga & comics + consume a lot of media, what I think One Piece does so well is subvert even subtly the " language " of expectations you build up as a nerd and long time reader. Usopp here is a good example but Luffy helping Nami despite her initial pushback but not giving in until she's ready to add and receive help, add to that the detail that he doesn't know her backstory because he was napping but is here for it full force anyway because that's his friend and crewmate. We might likely expect a protag or hero to " convince " someone they need the help, to argue or talk it out to come around to their friends but no - same as Luffy did with Koby in the very beginning, he will not help unless you ask for it. Unlike Deku ( and I love MHA ) who has classic hero code of " step in when not asked ", Luffy does not interfere unless asked. Think what you will of that choice from a moral or character perspective but even ~90 chapters in we have a through thread, each crew member has things like that and over time even without thinking you just learn who they are as people. I have a Zoro comment but I'll save it until the first BIG arc because it's too meta for now but I love this so far, looking forward to more!

About Luffy being like Goku: In case you didn't know, Dragon Ball is pretty much the grandfather of all classic modern shonen
(shonen = manga for teenage boys). You'll find tons of "Goku-like" main-character in this genre simply because the authors of these mangas grew up reading or watching DB and took inspiration from it. Oda is no exception.
In fact many consider what we called "The Big Three" of manga (One Piece, Naruto and Bleach) the direct successors of DB.

you never watched bleach I am assuming
because while naruto and one piece are directly stated and very obviously take inspiration from dragon ball

outside of kubo saying he liked dragon ball
there is no connection between bleach and dragon ball

    • @colibri224
      @colibri224 Год назад +2

@@adam-dn3hi I would disagree. It's not obvious of course and I'm not saying all modern shonen are straight up copycat of DB.
However, DB established and popularized tropes we can find in most modern shonen and that includes Bleach: the power up through transformation, the inner demon (Oozaru for DB, Ichigo's Hollow for Bleach), the eternal rival (Uryu, Renji or Grimjow depending on who you ask), the training phase, the mystical aura and power-level (the Ki for DB, the spiritual pressure for Bleach), the super-strong old man, and of course the annoying love-interest (I'm kidding, I'm kidding 😁)
All of this to say: yes, Bleach's tone is definitely more mature than most shonen, but saying it has absolutely no connection with DB is denying the facts in my opinion. I don't think Kubo consciously took inspiration from DB to create Bleach, but DB definitely had an impact on him and consequently his work.

    • @adam-dn3hi
      @adam-dn3hi Год назад

@@colibri224 the problom with that is that all of this can be found in literaly other shounens around the time of dragon ball or before it
which we know bleach DID take inspiration from(except for the second thing you mentioned which is just unrelated to dragon ball)
"power up through transformation" like in saint seiya
something bleach is stated to be inspired by
"inner demon" the oozaru isnt an inner demon its a state of rampage
it posses no inner struggle because its just goku going big monkey
while going rampage through anger is very much a thing in shounen anime
it has nothing to do with the inner demon in bleach
"the eternal rival" goku never had an eternal rival(he had some occasional rivals tho)
vegeta was a villain for the saiyan and frieza sagas(being barely an ally in the frieza saga)
in the android and cell saga goku had a rivalry with CELL instead of vegeta
and in the buu saga vegeta wanted to fight goku it got delayed and than he returns into being a villain again
he wasnt a rival of goku until dragon ball super
having an eternal rival character(if we even consider that a troupe) at best came from naruto(atleast as far as i know)
and in bleach ichigo doesnt have any rivals its just friends and former enemies who are now friends
      "the training phase"
you mean a training arc or just training in general?
either way dragon ball didnt really have any training arcs they kinda just nonstop training
      "the super-strong old man"
thats more of a culture thing
the super strong old mentor is the troupe one but it doesnt appear in bleach
" but saying it has absolutely no connection with DB is denying the facts in my opinion."
there are no facts to be denying
it simply doesnt have a line of connection to it that can be drawn without it being cut by another fact

Okay: Usopp's name starts with the same sound as the "u" in "sue".
Something to keep in mind about pronouncing Japanese names and words written in English characters: every letter only has one sound. The vowel sounds are pronounced as follows: "A" as in "ah", "I" as in "eek", "U" as in "sue", "E" as in "hey", and "O" as in "oh". That order of vowels may seem weird to English speakers, but it's how Japanese is ordered. When you see two vowels next to each other, start by saying each one individually, then run them together. For example: "ai" becomes "ah-ee", becomes "eye". Another thing to keep in mind is that "U" sounds that are sandwiched directly between two consonants are often shortened so much as to effectively be silent ("Asuka" is closer to "Ahs'-kah" than "Ah-sue-kah"). If you keep all this in mind, the only thing that will really cause you to mispronounce words is stressing the wrong syllables.
