Beautiful, clean, well thought out panel. If you are going full tilt IFR this is the way to go. Like how safety minded you are with your tie-breaker third attitude indicator. Side panels are very well done and like your shade of gray for the interior. 3-way flap switch on the stick is perfect. Personally I am a day VFR minimalist (D-180 & iFly 740) but can really appreciate what you have done and the standard you have set for those that want to go full IFR. Well done sir!

Thank you for the comments and for watching! I’m pretty happy with the layout and had lots of input form other builders that helped me make my decisions.

I'm running a G3X with G5 backup; single com and autopilot. A simple system, but still a lot to figure out with the G3X. Can't wait to get to learning it, and considering having some professional consultation to help initial configurations and handling all the updates that have come in since the panel was originally built by Aerotronics a couple years ago.

I decided on the Dynon after a long battle in my head between Dynon and Garmin. I didn’t think I would go wrong with either choice. It is incredible how much you can do with these systems and it can be quite daunting. I have been flying jets since 1999 and my RV-8 can do way more than any of them.

Do you have plans or schematics for those side panels? Looks like you had to move the throttle aft some, yes? Would love to do this in my finished -8. Don’t think I have the skill to draw those up myself. Any help would be appreciated!
    She looks amazing!

Hi Ryan, thank you for your comments and for watching the videos! I don't have a template...what I did was use some poster board and make rough shape for what I wanted. That took several iterations to get it right and the bend I wanted. That was followed by several attempts with aluminum sheet. It isn't really all that hard, just time consuming as you go back and forth. Each RV-8 will be a little different in shape and will need its special touch.
Also on the throttle position, yes I did move it back to a position that felt more comfortable to my hand placement. I used a "70%" power location on the throttle itself and where my hand felt good. Keep in mind that changes the cable lengths, the brackets will all be different for the part that holds the cable end and the geometry changes. All in all these sides took around 40 man hours of work to get done, but totally worth it!
      Cheers, Michael

Wow- excellent job! I’m impressed with your attention to detail. What did you use for a flap position transducer?
    Beautiful plane & panel.

Thank you! I used the Ray Allen POS-12 position sensor tied to the flap control. Here is a link to my blog referencing that part: www.rv8-hangar.com/flap-sensor-2/
Thanks again for watching the videos!

Why did you make the flap up switch on the stick raise the flaps all the way up? I assume you would never use that on a go around? Trying to understand it. I’m thinking mine would increment up just like down.

    • @therv-8pilot
      @therv-8pilot  Год назад +1

I had it step up initially but this airplane, with 200HP, accelerates so fast that I went right through the max flap speed. So I have it got straight up with one click. If I’m flight the final approach at a speed of 70Kts IAS and I go around I hit 100Kts IAS very quickly so I need the flaps to retract fast. So one click is much easier for me. Not for everybody I guess but that the fun of experimental aviation!

Great setup. Quick question. On the tonstwn grip. How did you get the radio flip flop switch. Its not an option on website. I would like it like yours. Did you add that yourself?

Thanks for the comment! Reach out to Tosten and tell them what you want and they will make it happen, they are awesome to work with. Its just a ON-ON toggle switch. They have done many like that, I just did the same. Thanks for watching the videos!

Not even close…Dynon is very affordable!

I have a similar setup in my build except going with the cheaper Garmin 175 instead of the 650 and I have a Garmin SL30 along with a single Dynon COM, and a single display but I have a Garmin G5 for some backup. Going off what you see on the panel (plus transponder and autopilot that you don't see), not counting wiring, installation and switches, my guess is around 35-40k in avionics.
