In this episode of Exploring the Qur'an and the Bible, I interview Dr. Shari Lowin of Stonehill College. We discuss the figures of Adam and Eve across the Qur'an, the Bible, and Rabbinic literature. We discuss the Rabbinic and Qur'anic interpretations of the Biblical creation stories and the "fall" narrative.
Professor Lowin's research centers on the interplay between Judaism and Islam in the early and early medieval Islamic periods, c. 800-1200 CE, focusing mainly on the development of Jewish and Muslim exegetical narratives. She is particularly interested in how the Muslims and Jews living in Islamic societies interacted with one another as they contributed to and drew from each other’s exegetical corpus on shared scriptural forefathers. She is the author of, Arabic and Hebrew Love Poems of al-Andalus (Routledge, 2013). In the seven chapters of this book, she examines Hebrew and Arabic eros poetry (shirat ḥesheq/ `ishq poems) of religious scholars in 10th-13th century Muslim Spain. Her earlier work on Judaism and its relationship with Islam focused on the narratives of Abraham and on accounts of enemies of God in the midrash aggadah and in the ḥadīth. In one such study, a monograph entitled The Making of a Forefather: Abraham in Islamic and Jewish Exegetical Narratives (Brill, 2006), she demonstrates that while Judaism and Islam used each other’s narratives to create narratives of sacred history, they tweaked and adjusted each other’s accounts in their retellings.
Very informative discussion, one point in the quran Adam does repent I believe, "Rabana zalamna an fusana" - "Lord I have wronged myself" which is a popular dua / prayer in the muslim world as opposed to Satan who said "Had God not asked to bow down I would be not be out of heaven", I think Adam shifting the blame onto Eve contrasts here in the Quran where Satan is blaming God and not himself for his current state.
Qur’aan 7:23 "... Rabbanaa, ḏ̣alamnaa anfusanaa... = ... Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves..."
I find it interesting that Jewish interpreters are so obsessed with the Hebrew when these stories predate Hebrew itself. and it is a very “Lawyer” type of interpretation.
“Eve never seduced she just gave the Apple….”
“Adam never said she SEDUCED me… he just said the woman you gave next to me gave it to me”
This is typical literal re-interpretation a lawyer would do in a court. Devoid of the underlying themes making mythology beautiful….
With that said. Very entertaining guest and I learnt a lot from her ! :)
No Eve in the Quran. It is what we call ayat "Mutashabihat". Also, no Cain or Abel. Some stories percolated to muslim minds through the tafsir or hadith. But not to the Quran.
There is an excellent lecture by Dr Jeffrey Lang where he explains the story of Adam and Eve in the Quranic context. It is titled "the purpose of life" and he shows how it served as a catalyst for changing his strongly held athiestic views. A fascinating watch.
The koran plagiarized the story from the Apocalypse of Moses.

Specify apocalypse of Moses?

What I meant was, what do you mean apocalypse of Moses, it has no meaning to me in reading the Qur’aan. In other words, where in the Qur’aan, Aayat and Suurat? Hence, specify in the Qur’aan.
I just bought two of your books after your interview with Capturing Christianity. It's impossible to tell what you believe religiously, and every time you say something I learn something. Keep up the great work, I'll listen to this next time I'm on a commute!
I like this, for someone to maintain such a level of ideological empathy that it’s difficult to see what the individual actually believes is amazing.
God in talmud is basically a bigger rabbi he argues, corrects, sides with, rebukes, and often gets rebuked by other jewish rabbis where God admits to being wrong in "heaven"
This was a very funny observation. Made me laugh.
I wish you would bring an Islamic scholar on to explain how Muslims understand the Quranic stories. There is a fundamental difference in how Muslims view God and how the Jews and Christians seem to view God and it is reflected in how the stories are presented in the Quran and the Bible.
Comparison is based on the false premise that three different ways of life ( religions )were revealed .This is absurd that GOD in his wisdom would reveal different ways .This confusion stems from the fact that Christianity started as a fellowship and gradually became a philosophy then to an institution followed by developing into a culture and finally into an enterprise of the 20th century .All the aforementioned phases were born in different countries far from its origin
I really enjoyed the first 10 mins and the last. Would have liked to hear much more about the two creation stories, developments by the (especially 1 C) Talmudic patriarchy. Thanks though.
The odd thing is the New Testament is the highest relationship of love is between a Father and Son.
In her mind, what was the purpose of the sacrificial system? Why the day if atonement?
Why is Eden on Earth in the Bible and described as paradise/heaven in the Quran?

Multiple double ad drops over 3 minutes each is disrespectful to your guest.
He has no control over adds. Just pay the $15 month. It's well worth the price if you are a big RUclips media consumer.
The Jewish professor is jealous of Quran
Bit harsh of you lol
The original scriptures do not exist both in Judaism and Christianity, instead interpretations by way of Talmud and the books of the bible, both of which have multiple authors who have included fables, interpolations, contradictions, genocidal verses, pornography and slander. Therefore they are unreliable source of information which lends to the scepticism .Furthermore all the prophets preached (by revelation via Angel Gabriel ) the same set of commandments and they according to Matthew 26:39 and Numbers 16:4 prayed like Muslims by prostating .
can you come in a more peaceful way into the discussion? or are you going to regurgitate whatever you heard from your local preacher? the discussion here is at a much higher level, caring about what Islam teaches and you're puking negative comments about the other sources? I'm ashamed of having the same religion as you do
You are just parroting your own Quranic dictum here - not an especially helpful or relevant comment on a comparative religion forum!
You must be more realistic since you are comparing the three so-called religions notwithstanding the fallacies inherent@@dodgysmum8340
What I find really interesting about the Adam and Eve story is that God knew full well they would eat from the tree at the time He forbade them. He is God, the All-knowing. Their disobedience shouldn't have come as a surprise to God. And yet, when they eat from the tree, God is all like, 'What have you done? Did you do what I knew you would do when I told you not to do it?' I mean, come on, what's with all the feigned surprise God?
This exercise was to teach Adam and Eve to ask for forgiveness when they fall short due to their capacity to do sin out of freewill. This is as per my understanding of Islam on this story.
@@PathharaPathik So what you're saying is, it was all a setup from the start. It went exactly as planned and Adam and Eve got banished from paradise for it. Doesn't reflect well on God, don't you think?
Sorry to state the obvious: The myth is probably much older than the idea of an omniscient god.
@@stevesmith4901how so ? God tested Adam and Eve and choose by their own free will to sin. Even if God knew they would fall into that trap the responsibility belongs to them
@@stevesmith4901 I see it as a mercy and love to us (human kind) from the most High who created us with freewill. So that every time we do sin, all we have to do is sincerely ask Him for forgiveness. Like our Parents.
If you do not see it that way, I can not help.
My idea about their nakedness being exposed is that Adam and Eve had fur according to the evolution narrative of creation. After they ate from the forbidden fruit, it caused them hairloss (that's why probably it was forbidden) which caused their skin being exposed. Hence they were covering themselves with leaves. This creation story then fits the evolution story as well.
"... their nakedness being exposed is that Aadam and Eve had a fur, according to the evolution narrative."
What's "the evolution narrative"?!? You just made it up😂
@@samantarmaxammadsaciid5156 That the first hominides had fur like other animals but with homo sapience it dissapeared for some reason or another.
