Our crossbeak chicken (Ladybug) has a very, very advanced crossbeak. She can't eat on her own. We hand feed her every day. We weren't sure that she was going to lay eggs but she started laying just as the others did and has been giving us eggs ever since. She did get sick a few months back. We thought we were going to lose her for sure. But we got her some medicine and she fought like hell. Ladybug bounced back and is back outside, stronger than ever.
I love my cross beak Babs - Ms Sriesand hen.She is over 8 years old now - and beak trimming helps her, soft food and not having a flock to compete with. I find that spraying her legs with cooking oil to kill any lice helps her as she can't clean up her legs. The rooster Phillip grooms her too.
So glad you did this video…2 of our baby Lavender Ameracauna have cross beak and we’ve never seen this before. Really appreciate the info and hoping they both make it :)
Turns out scissorbeak is very common among amuracuanas. Last summer we had 3 amaracuna chicks hatched by an adopted bantem mom. One was weak from the moment it hatched and died. The next had cross beak, very minor but she still died. This year we had 3 born, one amaracuna and one half blood amaracuna. The amaracauna was a perfect healthy white chick, she was beautiful. But she had cross beak, and it didn’t show til she was about 2 weeks. It was awful watching it get worse. Finally she died. Her half brother had a very slight underbite, was perfectly fine. Turns out he had crossbeak. It’s getting worse but my dad has been trimming his beak to try and keep him in better help. Not sure if he will make it.
I'm SO sorry about the predator attack. We lost our first chicken to a predator this year, and it was definitely hard on us! We also have a cross beak chick at the moment, and are REALLY hoping she continues to be able to eat, because we love her! Never thought about the ability of a cross beak chicken to provide companionship to an injured chicken. That's amazing!!
You can carefully clip the beak with cat nail clippers. My Annie has a lower beak that's curling inwards side to side so I had to do it cause her little tongue was losing space.
I too have a serious crossbreak she lives inside and was doing great eating on her own, day 2 of not eating and getting very worried. How do you feed your Ladybug? Thank you
I have a chicking with very curled toes. She lays the lagest light blue eggs with beautiful extra calcium on her egg that look like tiny pearls. And she lays them almost every day. So I got to say She is disabled but one of the prettiest girls and the best egg layer. So the moral is the disabled ones useually have other great qualities. : ) God bless them all.
I wanted to share an important video that I wish I would’ve saw sooner. It is a lady who makes sure her Scissorbeak is well fed with the nutrients he needs. The best thing about this video is that with a Crossbeak there’s such a mess with feeding and this stops all of the wasted food. The ingredients the lady uses is in the title section of their video. But I’m sure you can make up your own torpedoes. There is no question on how much the Roo is getting to eat either. The best thing is that there’s no mess on the face that gets stuck on the beak. And most importantly no water to water down the nutrients. Please watch if you have a precious scissor beak that your family loves before it is too late. ruclips.net/video/BpDNdE0CaJE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Thank you for this! So, we got our first six chickens (pullets) about a month ago. They are mutts (Rhode Island red, Plymouth Rock, English game hen something or others). Last week, we got 11 Easter egger chicks (one was a bonus chick) which is how I found your channel. They are only 1 week and 1 day old today. Today, my 12 year old said one chick’s beaks was crooked. I knew what it was as soon as I saw it, because I had seen another of your videos last week about your chickens! We are not keeping all 11; three are going to my brothers neighbor who has had chickens forever. Even though we are giving them away for free, I couldn’t in good conscious pass off this chick to him. I don’t want to burden him with that, and I want to be the one to care for this special chicken. I’m going to do whatever I can to keep her happy and healthy. Already researching an extra small coop just in case she needs to be set aside. It’s nice to know the cross beak chickens are good company for other injured chickens. ❤️ I know this is old, but hopefully you see this comment. I’m glad I “know” someone who has a chicken like this!
I have my Annie, she's an Ameracauna, scissor beaked lil thing. A Wheaten. One of my other hens hung herself by a toe on a wire fence. I brought Clair inside to figure what I needed to do😳. Wow! Annie came to the screen door for 2 days, so on day 3, Clair wanted out! I put her and Annie together in their baby coop another couple days while Claire mended, hobbling around. Annie moved from the bottom of pecking order in those days. Clair hopped out and is now doing fine, but at bottom of their order.
Found your video while researching crossbeak chickens. One of my Americauna chicks has a crossbeak and I’m trying to figure out how to help her. So far she seems to be thriving. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I’ve got 2 hens that came out like this that I will raise until the end. I can’t say I’ve ever had a chicken peck my eyeball. Also for the record don’t put a older hen with a hurt chicken they have feet that they use quite often as a defense💯%fact
No idea if you still monitor comments. I don't know where to start - in your chicken related videos. I've seen a few, and this one was GREAT! I didn't even know cross-beak was a thing and I can see why you keep and nurture her and go to the extra effort. Nice. I've subscribed to your newsletter - I don't 'do the gram' or tweet but I send love from BC Canada, and congrats for what you've accomplished and are doing!
This is a great vid! Thank you! I've got a little cross beak. She's one month old. I've named her Edna Scissor Beak. She's quite the runt, but also quite the pip. Lots of energy and spunk. I make fermented food for the chicks and she scoops it up with her bottom beak. Love your idea to place them with recovering hens for company.
So glad it helped a bit! Thinking of your little chick -- they are great little fighters, and they are so sweet when they figure out how to handle their special needs!
So sorry about your chicken girls. Chicken wire is only good to keep the chickens in- not predators out. Use hardware cloth & do an apron border too. :)
My cross beak silky is sitting in my lap watching your video I have tried to learn how to trim her beak but know one shares if you do both top or be beak Thanks for sharing 👍♥️👍
Just found your videos 💕 I found a stray dog and let my guard down while trying to call its owners it broke through our fenced off area. She ended up with stitches and a pain injection 😁
Abby age 10 from Washington: I stated with 5 chicks sadly peep was a rooster and we had to give him away and yesterday my Favret chick Acorn suddenly died she was very healthy. she was my only ester egger shy was very sweet even as a chick shy would nuzzle and hop arrowed in my hair.
I have a chicken with cross beak. I've noticed she doesn't forage on the ground when I throw out their chicken scratch. Can chickens with cross beak forage? Am I missing her eating off the ground? She is 4 and 1/2 months old so she is getting food. I just want her to be able to get scratch sometimes. Not sure what to do.
When your chicken was a baby chick, how did you feed it? We have a 6 week old who is crossbeaked and I feed her and give mash. I am scared to trim her beak, because I don't want to hurt her. Is there a tutorial out there? Do they get better at eating once bigger?
I have serious crossbeak, she eats great. We are on day 2 not eating, what to do? Our girl lives in the house, we are going to try baby food and pedi light. Do you have any suggestions???
I was given 3 chicks, not that i needed more! One has scissors beak... it does manage to eat and drink. Im fine with not culling it. My concern: cold wintets in Michigan with a tongue exposed to the freezing temps. Any experience with cold weather issues for a crossbeak???
I have a rooster I named pretty boy his beak is about as bad maybe worse then yours . He walks up to me every morning and let’s me feed him by hand . And I have to keep the other chickens from stopping him from eating.
She does eat the same food - there has to be enough of it that it “piles” a little, where she pretty much just smashes her face in it repeatedly since she can’t “peck” little bits off the ground.
I have an 8 yr old Dark Brahma with scissor beak. She’s very sweet and she has found ways to thrive. Her beak needs a trim, so that comes this weekend. This is an amazing video of a rescue of a scissor beaked chick: ruclips.net/video/zy1SLozp6wg/видео.html
Hey there! My Lotti also got a cross beak. My only issue is, she always has parasites because she can not clean herself like with a normal beak. Is she also "dirty" ? How do you help her to be free of parasites? Do you deworm her? If yes how? Sorry for all these questions. Best regards!
Aw, I'm sorry to hear this! We've never had worm or parasite problems -- we use the "deep litter" method in their coop, and they free range for a few hours a day, usually. I think this has helped their systems regulate worms and parasites better... knock on wood!
@@OakAbode they have everything like the sandbath etc. They are also free range. They get it from wild birds. I will have to shower her. Only good thing, she likes the hairdryer 😂
I'm so sorry to hear this, my friend. I lost one of my favorites as well. Sure didn't realize how hard it would be. :( They are such special little gals.
Please just don't breed these and any birds afflicted with other issues. This and other issues has been caused by commercial hatcheries allowing anything to breed and this recent boom of hatching eggs is also promoting very poor/weak and badly inbred genetics which just makes things worse. Our heritage birds have gone to crap in the last 60 years and keeping birds like this around is fine as long as you don't let them procreate.

Skip to 3:30 or so for the chicken
Thanks
Thanks so much!💕
That's a really good use for a scissorbeak. The sweetest chicken I ever had was like this, and she was awesome.
You treat your chickens, like I treat mine. Spoiled babies :). Sorry for your loss. It’s a terrible feeling.

I was not optimistic about a cross beak having any real use but there it is. Companion bird.
You are a good chicken mom and she is a sweetheart.
