  • Performing a Big Band Drum Cover to a Popular Jazz Standard Originally recorded by Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers in 1958 and the tune was written and Composed by Bobby Timmons was also recorded by many other jazz artists including Quincy Jones, Wes Montgomery, Sarah Vaughn, and many more. This version was recorded and arranged as an upbeat and exciting fast double time swing by The Charles Mingus Big Band from the Mingus Big Band 93 CD. The tune was also arranged by Sy Johnson. The song kicks off with a hot bari sax intro featuring Ronnie Cuber on Baritone Saxophon, features some really tight licks, an extended open solo section, and an infectious bari sax line that drives the whole piece. Also features spaces for a lot of other solos including an optional solo for Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar, Tenor or Alto Sax, Bari Sax, and many more. We performed this piece when I was a sophomore in High School. I also recorded the Art Blakey Bobby Timmons version of Moanin back in 2021 and now recorded the Charles Mingus Big Band Version of Moanin. I also added a mini drum solo at the end of the piece. This tune was also the second track of the "Mingus Big Band 93 CD Nostalgia In Times Square" and the tune was also recorded in 1993 by the Mingus Big Band. Mingus also recorded this song in 1959 and released on the Atlantic label in 1960. It has been reissued on CD by both Atlantic and Rhino. Here is The Charles Mingus Big Band Version of Moanin.
