    It’s reassuring to see every nation on earth having vested interest in preserving this vault. I hope that because everyone has skin in the game, even in a worst case scenario, thousands of years of agricultural advancement made by billions of people throughout the history of mankind would survive.

      She's said no gene altered crops. All of our crops are gene altered. They aren't storing our progress, they are storing what the earth offers naturally. They should have an area for genetically enhanced crops- our progress, and also the main components to many different drugs.

      Yeah. But, its worth noting that Longyearbyen was bombed and occupied by the nazis in WW2. The seed vault is part of mine no. 3. That's an abandoned coal mine. Some of these mines run straight through the mountains so that's why there was some bombs flying back in the day. Did I mention that Russia also have their own city up there, and have been muttering about not enjoying the Norwegian supremacy of Svalbard for the last 100 years?
      What I'm saying is: we all agree to the seed vault being a great thing until one day there's some trigger happy ding dogs who decide they want to strike this or that place. Buuut the seed vault is far far into the mountain, so likely to survive A LOT.
      And Svalbard is such a beautiful place. I've lived up there. So so nice

    As a science fiction lover and someone who has studied dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction extensively, I can’t help but feel like this vault is a no-brainer. Sure, a scenario in which it might become necessary for human survival AND is accessed by people who would use the seeds for good purposes isn’t even all that likely, but it’s no overstatement that agriculture is what made human civilization possible in the first place. For the most part, we take that for granted way too much.

      While on the surface this comment seemed to be intended partially as a joke, you raise an important point. Pollinators play a huge role in agriculture and we need to protect them. However, it would be much more difficult to make a vault to back up the species of animals that pollinate because it's not easy to create living organisms from DNA. Also if a whole species died and we brought it back using stored DNA, there's a chance that the species would not have some of the behaviors that it has before it died off, because some behaviors are learned from other members of the species and there would be no extant members to teach the new members how to act. Also, some insect colonies have hierarchies that might be difficult to recreate and make viable again.
      Long story short, our best chance of protecting pollinators is when they are alive. We need to learn about the ways they function in their ecosystems and make sure that we protect the things that keep them alive.

    Excellent information! Before hybrid seeds became available in the early 1930's, farmers grew a wide verity of seed crops that were hardy and thrived on their land. There were hundreds of varieties of corn and beans. After plants were bred for uniformity to allow for mechanical harvesting, many plant varieties were lost forever. Had it not been for farm and gardening families who kept growing the heirloom seed and later the Seed Savers Exchange, our farm crops family tree today would look like a telephone pole. To better see understand the urgent need for banking plant genetics. By growing a national crop that has the same genetics, you have the making of the Great Irish Potato Famine of 1845. ~ Thank you for making people more aware of the value of preserving our food plants genetic treasures for the Future.

      The goal of the Svalbard seed vault is to contain the seeds used for agricultural biodiversity. The plants stored are all the plants that make up what is used in every day food. Which is why plants like marijuana aren't stored yes there are cases where marijuana can be used for medical purposes, however marijuana can't feed people and keep people alive. If all the plants and seeds in the world outside the vault is destroyed, no one is going to be concerned over whether marijuana seeds are safe there are far greater worries.

    "Genetically Modified Crops aren't allowed"
    Every single crop that we have selectively bred: Are we a joke to you?

    • @Dracomandriuthus
      @Dracomandriuthus 3 года назад +94

      The difference is that selective breeding follows pretty much the same rules of standard evolution. Genemodded seeds don't follow that rule, and since we don't have a guaranteed understanding of what would happen with those genemodded seeds in perpetuity, we can't accurately predict what changes we would make that have later impacts on the seeds. Of course there's decisions we make that might lead to a cascading failure state if we simply selectively bred something to a desired state until it degenerated to a point of nonfunctionality= See dogs, for example, and their current purebreds that have a high likelihood of health problems, such as the large dogs with hip and spine issues.
      But, all in all, since the seeds that have been behaviorally trained in certain environments to succeed in those environments follow the standard evolutionary paths, they have genetic drift in each seed. That's not necessarily the case for gene-modded seeds. Because of that, the amount of variance becomes much more predictable, but we haven't actually put the time in to determine the predictability of those seeds to degeneration. Going back to the dog example, if you have a few purebred dogs that breeed with each other over a couple generations, it doesn't matter that they're purebred, they'll eventually become a mnutt, that doesn't have the same health problems that consistently plague the purebreds. Maybe the mutt will have one, but it isn't likely to have *all* of them, and continued free access to the gene pool will lead that mutts offspring to select for the positive traits on average. Plants work the same way.

      I dare to contradict. What we've done to the banana for instance as far from evolutionary beneficial for the plant as it can possibly get. Without constant maintenance, the whole species would vanish within less than a decade. And the same could be said about many of our crops.
      Just because the method is different doesn't mean you can't get similar Frankenstein results via selective breeding. And on the contrary, gene modification does not necessarily result in unpredictable outcome.

      lol like they explained, it's like a bank vault, so it shouldn't matter if they know what's in it or not. Their job is only to return it to the depositor. If the depositor didn't label the seeds or keep records... well that was pretty dumb of them!

    The no drugs policy is absurd. All plants are important and deserve preservation. Also, the difference between recreational drugs and medical drugs is often very blurry, as many plants can be used both ways.

    • @mlc4495
      @mlc4495 8 лет назад +65

      The Gros Michel never went extinct, it was just replaced by the Cavendish as the primary banana crop in the 1950's due to being more disease resistant. The Gros Michel is still cultivated and is making somewhat of a comeback due to advances in disease eradication.

    • @tryAGAIN87
      @tryAGAIN87 7 лет назад +41

      Kobi iboK - Just to clarify: You do realise the natural banana is so full of seeds it's hard to eat right? The Cavendish and Gros Michel varieties that we eat in the modern age are called clones or hybrids, so the store bought bananas do not have 'reproductive' seeds. They still have tiny microscopic seeds, they are just impotent when it comes to reproduction. Thus, every banana you have ever eaten, was the same banana... How's that for a mind blowing fact?

    • @hunterpruett5455
      @hunterpruett5455 7 лет назад +1

      yes I actually did a research paper on that and the farmed banana is full of many seeds but they are small as the farmed plant has evolved to not need seeds. And yes wild bananas are full of seeds, big ones too

      It amazes me that we are building these stupid things for some stupid doomsday, rather than promote biodiversity, and plant all those seeds all over the planet, so they thrive, the plants are pollinated, they feed people and animals. It amazes me that THEY promote to the mass GMO as the way to go forward, as a perfectly safe equivalent of the original plant, yet they have a strict non-GMO seeds for the vaults. What's their plan ? How good are these seeds if a doomsday catastrophe occurs ? All soils would be fucked, so where do they plan to grow these millions of seeds ? Plus we may then not have the qualified people to grow these seeds, we may not have the right environment (no more bees) to pollinate these plants. I feel all this energy and all these $$$ would be better spent on promoting bio-diversity in the real life. Or did I miss the point of these vaults ?
