The thing I love about Switchfoot is that they are musicians. They make music about life, and as they are Christians, that comes out in their music. But they don't write "Christian" music the way we think of it, with the cliches and predictable metaphors. They write music that has deep, practical meaning for all of us, but especially Christians. It's about real music, not a label or genre. Who they are can't help but come out.
wow that line of "Where are you in my broken heart, everything seems to fall apart, everything feels rusted over, tell me that you're there" always gets me...
I lived with this guy and the drummer for a brief while in college down in San Diego. Crazy thing is that all the surfing seemed like the centerpiece. Never thought that they would get this big.
There are many things that I love about Jon Foreman's song-writing. While listening to this song I realised that one such thing is how his lyrics are like a narrative: I can't pick out one or two lines to show why he's amazing, but the whole song comes together perfectly, like a story, whether or not he reaches a conclusion. Even with fairly simple lyrics, he sums up feelings that I could never put into words. Jon is masterful, and a true blessing.
True organic music. Someone like Jon doesn't come around that often. I love when a song makes you realize true art and expression are still out there. The computer generated stuff thats shoved down our throats now is so empty.
All the people telling how naive the lyrics and the guitar is, I really don’t think a song can feel great or be amazing only by complicated or not-so-simple music. This song has such a massive vibe to it. I feel it and many others do to. That is what makes it so beautiful for us. In fact, for me it’s one of their best songs 💟
My first exposure to Switchfoot and I'm impressed. The singers voice has a double resonance. Almost sounds like a produced cut where he is singing over his own voice. Reminds me of the way Ozzy's voice is.
Notice how personal it gets.. Anyone can ask "Where is God in the genocide?" but how many people are willing to ask "Where are YOU in my broken hearts?"..
How come these guys don't perform this song at their concerts? I even saw them during their "Vice Verses" tour, and I was so disappointed they didn't play this
exactly...yeah it seems like he always asks those really deep personal questions that resonate with a lot of people, but who don't always necessarily have the voice or the guts to ask those questions out loud themselves
they are a Christian band, don't be mislead. These are songs about something more than earthly things, listen to Where I Belong from this record, he's talking about heaven, so keep in mind when you listen to them, it will change your perspective
***** 2nd Timothy Ad hominem, one of the least mature methods of argument. I'm giving my opinion of the song, which is what the "comment" option is for. You're replying defensively and insulting me and my interests. This song has a great meaning I just don't like the way he uses such cliche lyrics, that's all. If you're so passionate about this song, argue about what makes it so good. Don't look for an irreverent reason to insult me.
Good point . Let me make the argument then .it’s brilliant in its heart wrenching simplicity. This is a man who has dealt with some senseless tragedy and is looking at the ocean at night feeling an intense melancholy at the brevity, beauty, and pain of life. Where is God in all of this wrongness and suffering . Where is he for me ?! I listened to this song sitting on a roof one night visiting Florida . I was looking at the ocean at night , feeling the same melancholy, wondering what’s the point of it all. My stepdad had recently died. This song helped me process all that I was feeling. You see cliche , I see creative adjectives pulling me into his mindview . Jon Foreman is an elite songwriter. The Rich Mullins of this age . Though no one is as good as Rich Mullins
Redeemed By Grace "they lyrics" aren't over my head; I understand the meaning of the song. I just don't like the way he uses such cliche lyrics to express a concept that we all think about. I'm not an idiot or a fool or whatever you want to call me for expressing my opinion in the "comments" section of RUclips. Take your own advice: stay quiet & move on because I wasn't looking for an argument.

No way! That's wild. I bet they were great, genuine roommates.
I love Switchfoot. They’re so underrated. Great songwriting

I'm so stoked that they sang this song! Definitely my favorite song from the record.
The soft scratchiness he has in the back of his voice is great.
Heartbreaking rendition. How does Jon just keep getting better & better??
You get me in the feels every time with these songs Mr. Foreman.
This song means so much to me!! Holy Spirit is present in all situations.
Just a kickass song - lyrics are unbelievable.

you havent seen a live gig then
Gahhh this song.
They are christians in a band who put a more or less God influence in their music.
#catalyst (got a guitar pick with the word catalyst on it tattooed to my leg)
just honest Christians making music.. different from christian band
Eh, definitely not their best live stuff. Their Guitar Center Session show was super good
I think it’s phenomenal . The song is purposely simple . Perhaps it shouldn’t be featured on “guitar center “ but I love it
Noooooo! Drew

Honestly I think the simplicity makes in even better but there are also plenty of more complicated lyrics and the mixture is great
"Brothr Monk" they're not a christian band, which means it's not a christian song!!!
they are a christian band
Wrong
some of the least creative lyrics and music I've ever heard wow
You must be into miley cyrus... :|
She is into miley.
ok and your profile shows you love Miley...lol you're such a joke. I'm sure her twerking has deep meaning too.
Don't be an idiot
Cat Rosalita Coming from someone who likes Miley Cyrus... You are in no position to be insulting a song for it's lyrical value.
