I interpret afterlife in this context being a play on the idea of heaven or some other such better place. So the song to me is making the point that you don’t have to die to escape your pain and reach a better place, you can push through and find happiness on the other side of your struggles.
suicidal people believe that ending our lives will end the pain and suffering, in search of happiness and peace in the afterlife. i think that's what the message of this song is. you don't have to end it all to find peace and happiness.
