Something I noticed about Martijn's film-making: this video was spent mainly in a dark basement, digging soil. It could make for quite a boring video, that is dark and unenjoyable. But Martijn regularly interspaces the digging shots with footage of the trees, the sky, the mountains. It keeps it from feeling too dark and enclosed while still showing the work that he's doing. Love it.

Hi Martijn. I love the addition of hens. I have had hens throughout my life, if you let them out in the afternoon, say 2pm as an example they will forage and scratch and generally have a great time. At dusk they will want to roost for the night. This is a good time to feed them. I generally call them and shake a container of wheat or whatever food I'm feeding them, trains them to come back and eat before settling for the night. They like routine. Will take a week or two for them to feel at home. I'm imagining cooked eggs with your homemade bread, will taste like heaven. Exciting progress with the floor. Thank you for sharing your life. Your command of a clear narrative arc really is unparalleled in the DIY universe here on YT. Thank you for reminding us of where the cow shed floor has come from -- decades of muck over cleverly vertical stones for drainage, all taken out -- and where it's going. Truly a Herculean task, Martijn, I felt like singing a hallelujah chorus when the first wheelbarrow full of clean gravel went in. Your chicken ladies are delightful. I dream of your planting sunflowers for their seedy beauty needs. The black speckled one seems like the leader of the pack. Will you be naming them?
I wait all week long.... here we go into a world of calm, beauty, productivity. Lovely!!! Questions: Do you have a rooster? Does the pile of soil being dumped outside the cabin change the drainage of water near the cabin? Lily of the valley are almost out. I love them. Each stage is progress. 'Just cheering you on, as you take the time & care to build a good foundation for what's to come. Your cabins are a little metaphor for life.
Hi Martin, after the gravel sub base, you need to put a layer of sand over the top and then lay a damp proof membrane over the top before you lay the insulation and concrete slab. Lap the plastic membrane up the walls so that the concrete is then kept dry.

The chickens are a fantastic addition if looking to have a sustainable food source. If you love eggs then you're all set. At their peak of laying you can expect from 4 hens around 1.5 to 2 dozen + eggs a week minimum. I used to have chickens and miss having them, they were more pets than food for me. I never killed any for meat just harvested eggs. I let them live their lives until a predator got them or died of "natural" causes and then i would put their bodies out in the woods for other natures wonders to dine, thrive and survive upon. My youngest daughter still raises and cares for chickens in a coop that I built almost a quarter century ago now and it brings a smile to my face to see them.

Be careful with wood shavings and chicks you're raising away from adult chickens. They don't know better and get poisoned eating the shavings. If you notice they're falling over and can't walk right they're eating shavings. Just pull them off and they get well within a day.
I hate when the video ends! The cabin is looking awesome all because of your hard but satisfying work. The reward will be great! The chicken coup is just so perfect even you can fit in it lol. As for the chickens they have a great daddy!👍❤🐓
Hello Martijn, The chickens are adorable💚♥️💙 I have a suggestion that I have seen other youtubers do for their birds and that is putting straw on the floor and in nesting boxes for more comfort. Then when you clean it out you can use the fertilized straw as compost for your garden. You'ld have to research how to do compost. This is just how I've seen others take care of their chickens. Not criticizing!!!! Have a wonderful week!!! ❤
I could watch you work for hours! Is your back not killing you? You live in the most peacefully place and I am green with envy, thank you for giving this old lady something to dream about!
Welcome to the chicken!🐓 Be careful when they go outside. Use a sound or whistle to let them know when it’s time to go back home. (My grandpa did that!) Congratulations for the amazing work you are doing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Enjoy the green color of the wood. It will change fast! Doei! 🙋🏼♀️
Another great video. Greetings from Thailand 🇹🇭. As a pet chicken keeper, 36 and counting, be aware that wolves, dogs, weasels, raccoons, foxes, hawks, eagles, and even snakes, etc. love chicken dinners . Predator proofing is a must, air and ground. Raccoons can open doors with simple latches and even carabiners. You have a stone floor in the coop which is great, but even then I would bury about two feet of fencing around the coop and run. Cheers, they’re beautiful.
Some years ago, we tried to raise chikens, and I had reds and 1 white... the reds were picking on the [lone] white one. So, I hope your white one will not be "persecuted" by the "other" birds 😅
it will take about 2 weeks for the chickens to feel like home in the coop, and before you let them free range i've read you have to keep them inside the coop for those 2 weeks. then they will return when it's bedtime :) hope this helps! there's also compost that the chickens can help with, tons of youtube videos on this too

Straw will work too for their nesting boxes ????🐓🥚
Be careful, mirrors can start fire if the sunlight reflects of it.
Be careful with wood shavings and chicks you're raising away from adult chickens. They don't know better and get poisoned eating the shavings.
If you notice they're falling over and can't walk right they're eating shavings. Just pull them off and they get well within a day.
I absolutely love the song❤
The video made me cry happy tears.❤
Cheers
I hate when the video ends! The cabin is looking awesome all because of your hard but satisfying work. The reward will be great!
The chicken coup is just so perfect even you can fit in it lol.
As for the chickens they have a great daddy!👍❤🐓
I'm watching episode 65 in April 2024, Started in March with the first one! My favorite episode! The chickens are home!
Martijn talking to his chickens is so wholesome and adorable 😄😄
I agree 100 percent✨🌟⭐
These are hens not chickens.
Sooo adorable!!!
@@Hamishtarah Thanks for taking some of your valuable time to correct my English as a non-native speaker. Many blessings and have a great day!
@@Hamishtarah hens are chickens, just female ones
انتظر بفارغ من الصبر حلقة اليوم
.Eagerly waiting for today's episode.
I live in Dubai (architect & teacher) and loved your podcast recently. I watch your videos religiously every week, bravo to your wonderful life style.
He did a podcast? Link please?
Truly are enjoying watching you r progress.
As for the washroom, we save our used coffee grinds and pour them down into the hole.
Keep inspiring us 🇨🇦
Hello Martijn, The chickens are adorable💚♥️💙 I have a suggestion that I have seen other youtubers do for their birds and that is putting straw on the floor and in nesting boxes for more comfort.
Wonderful to see rain considering the terrible drought situation in the North of italy
This has become my sanctuary, my peaceful place.
Doei! 🙋🏼♀️
Thank you - for the gift of you and what your doing :)
Man, I remember when you made your workbench. It’s been a long time and you’ve come a long way! Long way still to go and I’m here for all of it.
The luckiest chickens on the planet! 😍
Cheers, they’re beautiful.
racoouns are not to be counted as predator not in this part of the world at least
he did that already in an earlier video actually, the underground fencing
Yes, i was thinking of a 5' electrified fence around there, and a more raccoon and fox proof latch
@@jwest8330 yikes, I missed that. Gives me a reason to go back and re-watch .
Don't forget. If the chickens eat snakes, or other creepers around then feeding them certain chicken food to flush that out wouldn't be a bad idea.
44:42 Dimensional soundscapes such as Doolaard's ending are effectively fitting.
Only dimensional soundscapes like this are suitable for us old hermits (hermits are always old).
How exciting to have hens. Thanks for the diagrams what you are doing with the cabin.
Martha, Ellie, Rebecca and Sofie 🙂
The photo of you holding the white chicken was worth a thousand words! Priceless…thanks for sharing so much of your life with us.
How true! I felt the happiness.
Martín! Felicitaciones por tus gallinas!
Some years ago, we tried to raise chikens, and I had reds and 1 white... the reds were picking on the [lone] white one. So, I hope your white one will not be "persecuted" by the "other" birds 😅
I love how curious the chickens are, they’re running towards you when you come to them with new stuff to check it out!😍
it will take about 2 weeks for the chickens to feel like home in the coop, and before you let them free range i've read you have to keep them inside the coop for those 2 weeks. then they will return when it's bedtime :) hope this helps! there's also compost that the chickens can help with, tons of youtube videos on this too
Straw will help to make the nesting boxes complete ? 🐓🥚
@@SueB369 plus always clean water- you don't want them to get sick
That is a great chicken coop, also!
Love the Rain sounds !
And the gravel being shoveled!
