Something I noticed about Martijn's film-making: this video was spent mainly in a dark basement, digging soil. It could make for quite a boring video, that is dark and unenjoyable. But Martijn regularly interspaces the digging shots with footage of the trees, the sky, the mountains. It keeps it from feeling too dark and enclosed while still showing the work that he's doing. Love it.

Hi Martijn. I love the addition of hens. I have had hens throughout my life, if you let them out in the afternoon, say 2pm as an example they will forage and scratch and generally have a great time. At dusk they will want to roost for the night. This is a good time to feed them. I generally call them and shake a container of wheat or whatever food I'm feeding them, trains them to come back and eat before settling for the night. They like routine. Will take a week or two for them to feel at home. I'm imagining cooked eggs with your homemade bread, will taste like heaven.
Exciting progress with the floor. Thank you for sharing your life. Love from New Zealand ❤

Hi Martin, after the gravel sub base, you need to put a layer of sand over the top and then lay a damp proof membrane over the top before you lay the insulation and concrete slab. Lap the plastic membrane up the walls so that the concrete is then kept dry.

Another great video. Greetings from Thailand 🇹🇭. As a pet chicken keeper, 36 and counting, be aware that wolves, dogs, weasels, raccoons, foxes, hawks, eagles, and even snakes, etc. love chicken dinners . Predator proofing is a must, air and ground. Raccoons can open doors with simple latches and even carabiners. You have a stone floor in the coop which is great, but even then I would bury about two feet of fencing around the coop and run. Cheers, they’re beautiful.

Dear Martijn good luck with your chickens you’ve made them a lovely home. Just a thought though maybe make the doors/openings more secure as foxes could bang on the door and maybe manage to dislodge your lock. It would be horrible if that were to happen. Thanks for showing us your hard work, well done.

The chickens are a fantastic addition if looking to have a sustainable food source. If you love eggs then you're all set. At their peak of laying you can expect from 4 hens around 1.5 to 2 dozen + eggs a week minimum. I used to have chickens and miss having them, they were more pets than food for me. I never killed any for meat just harvested eggs. I let them live their lives until a predator got them or died of "natural" causes and then i would put their bodies out in the woods for other natures wonders to dine, thrive and survive upon. My youngest daughter still raises and cares for chickens in a coop that I built almost a quarter century ago now and it brings a smile to my face to see them.

They will take awhile to settle in and would probably love some mulch on the floor of the hen run.. throw your scraps in too and some hand fulls of seed like sunflower and they will have that churned into top grade compost in no time! not too mention all the bugs and worms that will supplement their diet and enrich your eggs .. lovely to watch happy chooks .. very entertaining ❤🥰
