What I do know for a fact is that on weekends, there is barely any space to step inside my local D-Mart. It's THAT crowded. Clearly, business is booming.
DMart has a winning strategy in place.They have captured the market through buy 1 get 1 offers. The same brand is not so easily available on a similar offer elsewhere. The space for other retailers can be to choose different branded options for every product / category
I am from Chhattisgarh, we have Both Dmart & reliance Mart in many of our districts, but we still go to Dmart. Reliance Mart is really the worst as compared to their other products.

One more reason, D Mart does not offer door delivery. Majority of traditional Indian consumers prefer to feel the product before buying. But everybody does not have their own transport (like own car) to carry them home. So they restrict their purchases to quantities they can carry themself. Where I wish to make purchases of 5000 Rs, I restrict them to only essential ones. This is more true in NCR areas or where there is parking problems. I think D Mart should really rethink on door delivery of items purchased in store, may be at extra cost.

D-mart current strategy is customer friendly and economically viable to them. I personally feel too much aggressive approach may bring negative results.
In reliance store prices are higher. Once people have noticed this, they do not visit reliance store. We find crowd in reliance store where there is no dmart mall nearby.
DMart is still doing good. It will last longer than others because it doesn't have unnecessary overheads like rent and costly interiors. It is having own stores so even of they close DMart they have asset valued crores.
