Well done, i was really chuffed that the microscope helped you :-D it's not an easy job with good eyesight but you struggle a lot with yours. My close up vision got a bit blurred from 50 onwards, and it makes soldering a pain.
My eyesight is actually very good. I don't wear glasses normally. I only put these old reading glasses on for very close up work such as putting connectors on fiber optics and fine soldering. I don't need them for computer, phone screen reading, or news paper. Only when i am in real close less than a foot. These one on my bench are actually an old pair my wife tossed as she needed prescription bifocals.
@@Synthematix My distant site was terrible and a laser beam fixed that 10 years ago. Now my vision is perfect. I don't wear glasses or contact for anything. I don't need glasses to repair stuff and actually only put them on for the real close up stuff of very small parts.
@@12voltvids As time goes on electronics are gonna get smaller and smaller ffs, i work on N gauge trains, the solder pads are 1/2 a mm in places, had to make my own soldering iron tip thats 0.5mm
I have the next model up the 805 which is an under rated power house. Onkyo realized this and the next model year, the 806, they reduced the amplifier power. Purchased new in 2007 and have always ran it outside a cabinet. It works perfectly though the remotes volume up button is now worn out. I have cheap computer fans across the heat sink and one over the dsp board.
The thicker and stiffer mega$$$ dollars cable surely help in breaking more HDMI connectors. After a while will see the increase in definition just like in this Onkyo unit. I just love the SMDs and solder cracks. At the same time I would change the main capacitors for power amp section to keep the voltage from sagging while in multichannel mode and driving loads below 6ohms - their size doesn't look very inspiring maybe 8200uF, 10 000uF at most.
Three options are available,resolder pins with a tiny solder iron and flux if the pins are accessible,or use hot air station with flux to reflow the pins by melting the same solderings or remove the entire socket and solder all the pins of the socket using flux to remove bridges between pins and to the same for the pcb traces,clean the through holes and then reflow the socket back to its location and finally solder the attaching pins to the holes.The soldering flux and its quality is the most important in these repairings.After a lot smart phones/tablet usb charging port replacements reworking to hdmi ports is quite familiar but is still difficult due to the more pins.
Sure did. Sure glad I got out when I did. You have no idea how much I hated the business when I was in it. Now its just a hobbie and I get to pick and choose what I want to work on, and its just to make content. If it wasn't for the channel I wouldn't be touching this stuff anymore.
Seeing all those replaced capacitors brought back bad memories. I used to have a TX-SR606 that had chronic capacitor issues with the HDMI board. I trashed the thing after the third round of failure of the same caps. Swore off Onkyo after that. I hope your model doesn't have the same problem.
The flux i use has never let me down. No video today as i spent the better part of the day swapping this receiver into my system and programming my remote. Happy happy, now I can watch my cable TV, dvd recorder, laser disk svhs and beta decks all switched through the repaired amp and fed into my media room. Surround working and the the sub that hasn't been online for a few years. Spent the night watching old laserdisks. Working great. (And no, i didn't shoot any video of the swap out. There is no room in the equipment closet. I put a cd in the laserdisk and played it. When I went to eject the disk stuck to the clamp and dropped inside. White knuckel time I had to open the laser disk in the rack without bumping the tray or i would have had a broken disk. Guess the laserdisk is laserdisk only. Not trying a cd on there again. Future service I think to inspect the clamp and see why cd sticks to the top side.
I've got the TX-SR805 7.1 in use. Flea Market find and had to repair a busted banana jack for one of the channels. Best $40 bucks spent! This thing is a total Beast and sounds amazing! Biggest headache? It didn't have the remote. Using the 'on screen' to program is a bit of a headache.
I can't use a 4k without spending a bunch on rewiring as my equipment rack is too far from the tv. In my setup everything is hidden away in an equipment closet and only the tv is in the room with the speakers. My plasma is 12 years old now and going strong.

By the time the cable gets our if the closet, across the hall into the furnace closet, into the vent duct to the atic space over the media room, down the wall conduit and then up to the tv it is more like 60 feet. HDMI won't do that. Have to do it with hdmi to cat5 link units. The one I have is only 1080p for 50 feet 1080i for 75 and 720 for 100. 4k units need cat 6 runs. They get very expensive. Not really interested in 4k. I have it in my production studio.
Scart had issues but it was much bigger connector and robust. These modern USB-C /HDMI socket are prone to fail like this :( Modern console are good example of broken HDMI port
Great work ever... I've Onkyo TX-NR828 didn't keep on and no sound come, when I keep changing sources it keeps on for a time but also no sound come out, what may the reason. Unfortunately I live in Malaysia and cannot bring it to you to fix it, but you still can help so I will trying fix it myself that I'm electronic engineer. Thanks
side commenting on old video. in Finland we never had mask mandate during covid, in fact it was illegal for store keepers to require you to wear a mask. there wasn't much other restrictions either
Illegal for a private business to enforce their policy? Here there are still many stores that have a sign on the door that masks are required to enter. Private business can make their own rules as to who can shop there. The parts stores j deal with have just gone down to mask recommend and the staff still wear them.

A business that requires patrons to mask up can refuse. The business owner and employees have rights too. People that don't agree can go shop somewhere else. Also not talking corporate rights. Small business is a private business and these owners are citizens too. Mandates have been over here for well over a year and yet there are still private business that requires masks. People still go in and harass them but guess who gets arrested and hauled off to jail.
My question not abt this video, I bought a cheap esr meter & when i just googled esr values of capacitors varies in some chart. How can i able to know which is correct. Does the esr value varies with meter.
Nice Video really appreciated. Sir I want a favor from you I am having Onkyo PR-SC 5508 AV Controller which have some issue no menu (OSD) for information is displayed on TV screen. But if you put source in HDMI in Back of receiver or HDMI in front video and audio content is display on TV. Secondly on the flip panel button setup is not working, but however it is working from remote , thirdly pure audio is not working when button is pressed nor the led light is coming on when button is pressed . Kindly request your good self to let know what to test and what will be probably fault . Thanks
I hear you. I had to deal with an ignorant mover moving in furnature. I asked him to put in a mask and i got "the speech" so I told the customer that I could not enter if anyone wasn't masked and then i left. They had to reschedule a week later. No internet no tv for a week. Sucked to be them. All because of 1 worker.
hey man, could you do a revue on that m-scope? How much was it? I am legally blind and have a similar one I got for christmas from my sister in 2018. Thing is awesome! Problem is, it likes to fall over and now it wont stay up. All the goo on the suction cup thingy is dried up and it won't seal very well, I am considering drilling through the plastic of the base and mounting it onto a piece of wood.
An easy fix and another appliance saved! We have the same problem here with the pandemic. My wife caught covid along with five others all because one person refused to wear a mask and came in to the school staff room and said she wasn't feeling great! Next day five others including my wife tested positive! Luckily none of them got it too bad! Teachers are really at risk yet they keep the schools open. Blended learning with reduced class sizes would help but the politicians in their wisdom don't think it's necessary! Masks and distancing are a no brainer!
I get asshole movers and trades at job sites i am working at. I refuse to work if any worker or customer is not masked. I even offer them one but if they refuse i cancel the order and the customer has to rebook the order and wait again. Company policy. My safety is more important than the job.

I have been looking at those Andonstar digital microscopes and trying to chose between the AD206 and AD208... Is yours one of those? As far as I can tell the AD206 comes with a remote control and can zoom in, the AD208 is a bigger screen but does not have a remote so I am not sure if it can zoom in like the AD206. Anyone know?

You don't understand how they work. They don't really protect the wearer. They protect others if the wearer is sick and doesn't know it and they cough or sneeze. Then whatever they cough on can be contaminated and uoh pick it up. I wasn't the only one that walked out. I have a friend that caught covid on April 2021. He still can't taste or smell anything over a year later but hey it's just a flu.
Cool video mate. Yeah, there are people ignoring the rules in my local area and I find it very frustrating. My wife works in healthcare and has to wear heavily filtered masks all day whilst caring for these ignorant ones - she doesn't complain about it at all. Big fine now for breaking the rules now. 230.00 fine for not wearing mask in public, and a snitch line set up to report the ignorant jerks. Can only take off in restraunt when seated at table eating. It has nothing to do with the connectors. It has everything to do with thick heavy monster cables. The same thing happened to the fire wire port on DV camcorders. People that used the thin headphone type cable had no trouble. Those that spent 100 for a monster cable had to spend 300 to change the main board a few months later because the connector broke from the weight of the cable.
We get the same attitude regarding masks here in the UK. Some people think they are above the rules and the fact they never seem to be tackled about it is infuriating. But then there's also the neighbours not adhering to the lockdown so....
This is an incorrect way of soldering the support tabs on a hdmi socket, as you run the risk of flooding the socket with solder, just turn the board over and solder them that way.
@@12voltvids @16:24 @17:41 deep canyons of missing solder. should not have deep gaps like that. i compared that image to random hdmi stuff around the shop and all of them are soldered perfectly with all the holes completely filled solid and nice fillets. those onkyo connectors were incompletely soldered, that is 100% for certain. it is no wonder the traces broke.

ONKYO are notorious for poor solder on IC's and similar pin configurations. We saw digital problems all the time as a repair tech for Circuit City.

Micro soldering repair shops use Amtech flux, which would made this job much easier. As always good video and explanation.

Fans only come on at high power level when it heats up.

The older ones (like this one) were great. Then they came out with the models that had the bad DSP.
Agree mate. Still using a 35 year old A-8500 stereo amp. Just had it serviced and besides needing controls cleaned it was perfect. Great amps.

Every manufacture was different I couldn't begin to help because it was nothing I ever paid attention to.

My wife got a kick out of that. She is a chef and is always trying something new. When I say "what's for dinner" the usual response is "something i pulled out of my ass". Don't ask, just sit and enjoy. Tonight it was something with prawns and rice and it was bloody awesome.

It has nothing to do with the connectors. It has everything to do with thick heavy monster cables. The same thing happened to the fire wire port on DV camcorders. People that used the thin headphone type cable had no trouble. Those that spent 100 for a monster cable had to spend 300 to change the main board a few months later because the connector broke from the weight of the cable.
We get the same attitude regarding masks here in the UK. Some people think they are above the rules and the fact they never seem to be tackled about it is infuriating. But then there's also the neighbours not adhering to the lockdown so....
When I get the covid deniers on my channel they find our pretty quick their comments and conspiracy theories are not welcome.

Just tossed an Onkyo TX series because the HDMI chip died in it. :(
Very common problem. Onkyo was doing a free repair service on many out of warranty units for some time.
In the USA they offered (at the time) a discount on another model, ended up with a Sony.
I caught one at the dump. 40# monster. Run it in analog mode if that's an option and you can still listen in stereo mode. New garage stereo.

This is an incorrect way of soldering the support tabs on a hdmi socket, as you run the risk of flooding the socket with solder, just turn the board over and solder them that way.
Have to watch how much you apply.
Those capacitors will need to be changed.

It's the heavy hdmi cables that break these connectors. Shit monster cables.
@@12voltvids @16:24 @17:41 deep canyons of missing solder. should not have deep gaps like that. i compared that image to random hdmi stuff around the shop and all of them are soldered perfectly with all the holes completely filled solid and nice fillets. those onkyo connectors were incompletely soldered, that is 100% for certain. it is no wonder the traces broke.
Louis Rossmann while working on lousy MacBooks always has his microscope on and he does tiny component level soldering.
I don't work on computers. Or cell phones. This is about the limit i will do.
