I briefly talk about the updated Subtank RBA section and walk through wicking one on a Subtank Mini. My wicking method is quick and dirty. And it works.
Simple but effective way to help us with getting commutable building on RBAS. I've bin struggling with builds on this new sub tank mini, but after watching ur video I'm getting much better!! THANK YOU!!! And keep them coming.
I just tried this wicking method, I kept getting burnt hits and popping and bubbling, this worked like a charm, I cant stress enough how thankful I am, great stuff man
I'm new to building coil setups and the new Kangertech Subox starter kit has been a great way to experiment. I was having a lot of trouble with dry hits and for a while just suspected that I was making the coils incorrectly. I tried this wicking method today and it has worked flawlessly so far. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. I've had mine for quite some time but never used the rta. Had too many problems with wicking until now. Thanks a bunch!! You rock!
Like others said, great wicking method for the RBA plus, I've tried a few different methods but this is by far the best one yet, great flavor and no dry hits!
i tried the rebuild for the first time today after watching other videos and it kept burning. after watching your video I'm getting it, a few more tweeks and ill have it but at least its not burning now lol lol lol thank you :)
This is the least cotton used in any videos of such RBA ive came across. I believe with the lesser amount of cotton it will contribute more flavours and reduces dry hits. Im gonna try this soon and hopefully it doesnt leak. Thanks John.
Interesting video. I have always used contact coils with my original style subtank mini, with 5 wraps of 28 gauge about 2 mm inner diameter. Last coil was fantastic. I could vape non-stop through a movie if I wanted to, with no leaks or dry hits, around 25 watts. I did notice the twisted coil was not quite as enjoyable though.
Hey John, just started watching your videos and I love them, can you tell me where you got that drip tip, when I order they never fit this tank. Thanks and keep up the good work.
you might have just saved my life. been wrecking my brain trying to figure out why mine leaks so bad. was leaving space by the holes coz i read guides for the old model
Yeah I hate building spaced coils too, im a bit ocd about having them perfectly spaced. I do find they work slightly better on old and new deck tho. Currently vaping 60vg on new deck at 30w which i cant quite do with any of my contact builds without some dry hits
Excellent tutorial, I just officially built my first coil, and I was successful! Flavour could be better though, compared to the tanks that came with the subox kit
+sc0tte1 Congradulations! That's awesome! It's a long way down the rabbit hole and I know it can get frustrating sometimes. If you keep it up you'll be in flavor land sooner then you think :D
+MyRASTABAN Stock coils are garbage. No flavor at all. When I first got subtank I was way too impatient to wick the RTA so I used 1ohm stock coil that came with the tank. Now, before this I was using ProTank 2 with custom built coils and cotton. I took a few drags, too airy (I don't do lung hits, hurts my throat), lot's of vapor no flavor. Like, none. Maybe just a little after like 2ml of juice. Vapor is friging HOT even at 14W, I chain-vaped a bit and almost burnt my mouth inside. I tried upping the watts, lowering them etc, I get nic hits, my head spins, juice is being spent (a lot of it) but I got almost no flavor. I take the PT2 sitting next to me, same juice inside it, I screw it on instead of Subtank and wow! Flavor galore! Then I was like the hell is this crap, maybe it's this airy vertical coil, lets try horizontal build on RTA deck. Wow. Too much damn flavor haha :D Now I litterally have juices that I wattered down with clean VG/PG mix (no nic, no flavor) and I add half of that and half of what I would normally put in PT2 and I still get more flavor than from PT2, and more nic, but it's close (and manageable nic wise, 12mg nic is just too much in subtank, for me). Now if only I could make it produce cooler vape...get's too damn hot...
I like this version much2 better since the 1st one have only one airflow, and the 2nd one have a base problem always, and this one is awesome!!! luv to rewick it and to take it apart ;D
ever since I switched from the pre-built coil on my subox mini to the rba I get a really annoying loud pop as soon as I fire it all the time. I'm talking every draw no matter what and a little spitting as well. I think i'll give this a try and see if it fixes it as I usually leave quite a bit more wick and just tuck it down. Thanks for the video I hope it helps me out.
I've never built/wicked a coil in my life (yet) but all these methods seem to waste most of the cotton. What happens if you have, say, 3 coils, pull the cotton almost all the way through the first one, trim closest to the pointed end and then use the same cotton tube for #2 and #3?
I have the older style subtank mini and I drilled 2 holes a hair over 1/8 inch on the the outside and I have a 15 wrap 28 gauge ni200 in my rba. The problem I was having was too much juice was coming in and I was getting a lot of hot juice spitting out of my drip tip. So I added more cotton to adsorb the juice and I have had no problems. As I seen in your video of the new rba the holes look HUGE compared to mine! are you having any problems like that with your wicking method?
Nice demonstration. I wick the same way. Yes, the new RBA is easier to wick BUT for some reason it's not as flavorful. Not much, just a bit more muted like the Mini/Plus tanks compared to the Subtank. Odd, wish I could figure out why.
I have never had a wicking problem with the old subtank RBA and micro coils. I only use 90vg in it... Have not modified it in any way either. You just have to to wick it properly. Any mistake, you will screw it all up. Pancake wick works well too. But I usually make a standard wick.
With their OCC, I usually vape around 50 watts. I've tried the RBA multiple times. I just can't get it right. Even turning the watts down to 15, I can't escape the taste of burning cotton. I'm flooding it out, I'm waiting several minutes for it to absorb into the cotton...I just can't get it there. It sucks because the OCC is so expensive, and just loading up a RBA is cheap as shit. I just can't get the same flavor out of it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Hey, I'm planing to buy the NICHROME SERIES 80 RESISTANCE WIRE. What gauge should i buy? I'm using the Kanger Mini RBA Plus. You're advise is appreciated. Thanks.
i was wicking mine by threading the cotton through the coil then through the 2 holes and pulling out the slack whilst pulling the wall piece down to the deck and trimming it off outside for fear of it leaking but was getting dry hits if i had wattage too high so i just did it the bunny rabbit ears style and tucked it in bit like yours but with more cotton, not had a dry hit yet and done a full 10 second blast at 35w like i can on the occ 0.5ohm but i will try this method next time and see if i can get even higher ;-)
The way i determine if a youtube wicking method is good to go is listen for the awfull sound after a long draw. Like water on hot surface sound. That means a dry hit. No such sound in your video, wicking approved. Good job.
hey. very helpful kind sir. I have the OLD rba that came with the subtank by kanger 7 ml and I do not know if you are forced to take out the coil b/c the receptacle is in place permanently? yes or no would be sufficient. thanks buddy.
+Ricky Daniele Hey! I'd love to help, but I'm not sure what you mean by "receptacle". Are you asking if you need to remove the coil to take the RBA section out? If that's your question, no. You can remove the RBA section without removing the rebuildable coil that is installed in it. If you are referring to the bottom chimney section, that is removable. The chimney / barrel screws off (instead of a holder screw on the side, like the new RBA section), but can get stuck sometimes.
my latest "find" after long time experimenting now is that cutting the cotton close to the deck (not screwed on the base) actually feels better than my previous "bold" attempt of having the cotton "sticking out".... it must be the thickness (60/40 or 70/30) combined with the "scottish roll" that hinder the juze from flowing the chamber... using the "scottish roll" kinda method of fluffing the cotton combined with the small amount of cotton seems to be a better/quicker/smarter/more practical wicking method on subtank mini.. i must say, searching for the "best" way to wick the tank falls back to your method John, gotta hand it to ya, my search is "over"...lol... i have to make a video of it soon ;) i think this is an example of a situation where my "logic" seems to differ with real life application -humans have a tendency of using "educated guess" to justify something that seems better than something you overanalyze etc.. i've never been a total stranger of taking other peoples tips and tricks and making it "my own" -i guess it all comes down to "what are u prepared to do in order to get the best vaping experience" hehe
+Roger Selsø I'm exactly the same way. The quest for better or best never really ends once you start looking. I just sort of rediscovered rayon... talk about efficient wicking... Trade off is that it doesn't hold quite as much juice as cotton (kind of a pain when dripping). However, rayon seems to have a higher combustion point than cotton. Everything is a trade off... until you find that thing that lets you trade up :)
Is it even possible to get the new rba working with the default coils? I've tried like 3 different types of wicking and it just gets so wet I'm basically inhaling liquid. using 50/50 juice.
Finally decided to try the rba to save some money and kept getting dry hits. I was about to give up until i found this video. Been through 10 ml no probs. I found even if u keep some holes or gaps in between the wick and the juice holes with high vg it doesnt flood and allows u to chain vape without dry hits. Amazing flavor not even comparable to prebuilt ssocc or clapton. Just keep it loose to allow juice flow. #cloudchasin
Mario Haekal i started with the sub tank nano using the stock coils, got tired of paying a butt ton for replacements, 20-25 dollars in the shops for a pack of 5 where i live. upgraded to the sub tank for the purpose of rebuilding my own. saving a ton of money, air flow is more open and smoother, flavor is right on par if not better than the stock coils. i use 26-28 guage kanthal wire, 5 or 6 wraps depending on gauge, and hit 0.5 and 0.6 ohm everytime. wire and cotton is less than 10 bucks, and can make dozens. i highly recommend the sub tank rba.
The757Brian yes i know. i build my own coil since i start vaping. but the new vertical OCC coil that I got was very amazing. no single dry hit and I use it at 40 Watt. Even my Lemo and Veritas cant handle that wattage. I'm thinking of rebuilding the OCC but it seems the new version is non rebuildable since we cant pop off the top part
flappye yes we can rebuild it with older version, we cant do that with the new occ because we cant remove the upper part anymore. I"ve done that and pretty much destroy it LOL
i have since my apparently well received input/info (thx :) , found another excellent addition to my way of wicking : after seeing a youtube video where a guy REALLY fluffs the wick to improve the juze-flow through the wick -that making the wick a bit thinner and drawing through the wick with a screwdriver, and a decent wide cotton so that thinning it while making the entire cotton more fluffy, it wicks so much better !!! if i find that video again, i will post the link here in another post ;) (the more time u put into fluffing the wick, the more i can vape cause somethimes i chainvape a bit too much ;)
+Roger Selsø I am always looking to improve my vape experience! Toss me the link and I'll give it a watch. P.S. No such thing as too much chain vaping.
+Roger Selsø very interesting. and very similair to the "Scottish roll" method I demo in my latest video! If you haven't already seen posts about it, check it out. It is unbelievable.
John, your video a month before this one is completely opposite of what you say on this video. You say you don't like making spaced coils because they bring you no joy but a month prior it was your favorite build for the subtank. Also, your wicking on this video is completely different. Of course anyone can build however it suits the taste but I wonder why the 180 degree difference in just 4 weeks?
Hi need your help please. I'm not getting any flavour. I am getting popping. I've used 31g kan ohm reading is 1.49 .. using itaste 3.0 pro. Still no taste... what am I doing wrong? ?
+x Jaffa Cake to avoid spitting, u have to push down a bit the coils lower to the base, 3/4 of your coil compare to the rba pole..then wick it using this method, then its good to go tho.
Anyone know if popping means I have to much wick or not enough wick? Using Kanger subtank with the RBA, .5ohm kanthal coil it came pre-installed with. 80/20 juice running between 17-20 watts. Pops almost every hit I take. Any ideas?
+Vape Stuff with John Thanks for your reply. Could you help me with: What is the difference between the old version and the new besides the juice holes are removed and moved to the RBA head? Is there another drip tip? Are there improved air holes? I have the new on, and i can't deside if I should buy the V2 or just stick with the old one, and just buy the RBA section from V2. To me it sounds there is no point in buying the whole thing, if they only changed the juice channels. I could just buy the RBA v2 part and use it in my old Subtank mini
Vape Stuff with John I'm looking to buy the new Subtank mini from Fast tech. They are pretty much the only one that can ship it fast to were I live, but I'm not 100% sure if this is the version 2 or just the old one. Could you tell? www.fasttech.com/products/0/10004861/2769900-authentic-kangertech-subtank-mini-clearomizer
Sean RobinsonJR Hard to tell if it has the updated RBA section from the picture. However, according to this review it does www.fasttech.com/reviews/2769900/339644
Thanks bro. I purchased a couple of clone RTA decks with the new design from China for my STM's and the are flawless and wi\ork great. Vape on. Alsakavaper on FB.......Vaping Health and Advocacy

THANK YOU!!!
And keep them coming.
Eric Kal I'm really, really glad I could help!
most successful wicking guide. i used 26 gauge and trimmed the cotton length like yours. works like a charm. spitting and burn hit no more. thanks bro
Redhuan Manaf You're welcome! I'm glad I could help!

mrsinator That's great! I'm really glad I could help!
One of the best examples of good wicking... Happy Vaping 😎👍
+Shah dawon Thank you!
Just wanted to say Thanks, I've been having problems with wicking for quite awhile now, but this has solved my problems, Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this. I've had mine for quite some time but never used the rta. Had too many problems with wicking until now. Thanks a bunch!! You rock!
Rba not rta
Like others said, great wicking method for the RBA plus, I've tried a few different methods but this is by far the best one yet, great flavor and no dry hits!
i tried the rebuild for the first time today after watching other videos and it kept burning. after watching your video I'm getting it, a few more tweeks and ill have it but at least its not burning now lol lol lol thank you :)
+glenn corrigan That's fantastic! I'm glad I could help you!
this IS the best way, it very good to have some spaces to avoid dry hits and this friggen tank/rba never leaks...nice review
Great tip and demonstration. This will come in very handy!
I'm glad I could help!
This is a great video. Thank you no more burnt or dry hits
John, Just found your channel, I have to try that build, looks good, very well presented. have a good week. George.............
+George Trella Thank you!
Watching in 2022 what a trip to walk in the past. I use pnp rba coils. But I would use this too back in the day.
This is the least cotton used in any videos of such RBA ive came across. I believe with the lesser amount of cotton it will contribute more flavours and reduces dry hits. Im gonna try this soon and hopefully it doesnt leak. Thanks John.
***** No problem. Hope it helps!
I hope this fits in the Subtank Plus. Those holes are massive, I can't imagine ever getting a dry hit, especially with Ni200z
really helpful thank you so much no more burnt hits
Thanks John awesome tips, hope your move went good
Jack Mangefrida You are very welcome! The move is finally over and it went as well as a move can!
Interesting video. I have always used contact coils with my original style subtank mini, with 5 wraps of 28 gauge about 2 mm inner diameter. Last coil was fantastic. Hey John, just started watching your videos and I love them, can you tell me where you got that drip tip, when I order they never fit this tank. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Yours and most of the rba tutorials on this page are subtank builds, does this work on the toptank rba, (or maybe are they the same)?
Theres a theory that spaced coils offer better flavor reduced spitback and longevity of the cotton increased. What is your opinion on this?
You don't have to unscrew the top just the little screw and pull it off quicker & easier.. also why didn't you build a vertical coil with the RBA?
Thanks for posting this video! I've been having wicking issues and I think you solved them for me.
great video!! my problem is I follow everything you have showed and o still can't go an hour without a dry hit!!
With this method I keep getting the juice running down the centre well and out the air holes. Any tips?
+John Edward Doyle dont do this, this guy is stupid
you might have just saved my life. been wrecking my brain trying to figure out why mine leaks so bad. was leaving space by the holes coz i read guides for the old model
+Amiel Maharaj That's great! I'm glad I could help you!
Thanks a lot bro. Been using my RBA section only since the day I posted that comment and its doing great.
Yeah I hate building spaced coils too, im a bit ocd about having them perfectly spaced. I do find they work slightly better on old and new deck tho. Currently vaping 60vg on new deck at 30w which i cant quite do with any of my contact builds without some dry hits
why didn't you do the vertical coil build with the RBA?
Excellent tutorial, I just officially built my first coil, and I was successful! Flavour could be better though, compared to the tanks that came with the subox kit
+sc0tte1 Congradulations! That's awesome! It's a long way down the rabbit hole and I know it can get frustrating sometimes. If you keep it up you'll be in flavor land sooner then you think :D
+sc0tte1 Built 1,2 homs coil with kanthal awg 26 on 2,5mm and organic cotton, this wicking way and personally get better flavor than 1.2 stock coil.
MyRASTABAN Yeah I get much better flavour now, I just didn't mix my juice correctly
+MyRASTABAN Stock coils are garbage. No flavor at all. When I first got subtank I was way too impatient to wick the RTA so I used 1ohm stock coil that came with the tank. Eric Cartman Yea. That's why I like the updated RBA section so much--much wider margin for error :)
That Clapton wire looks like Youde Clapton wire?
With their OCC, I usually vape around 50 watts. I've tried the RBA multiple times. I just can't get it right. Even turning the watts down to 15, I can't escape the taste of burning cotton. I'm flooding it out, I'm waiting several minutes for it to absorb into the cotton...I just can't get it there.

why I get leakage from the air holes down below?
Hey, I'm planing to buy the NICHROME SERIES 80 RESISTANCE WIRE. What gauge should i buy? I'm using the Kanger Mini RBA Plus. You're advise is appreciated. Thanks.
Iswadi Aziz I don't use nichrome, but here's a good resource if you know what resistance you're shooting for www.steam-engine.org/
Bonjour est ce qu'avec ce montage tu peux vapoter en 20/80 High VG?
i was wicking mine by threading the cotton through the coil then through the 2 holes and pulling out the slack whilst pulling the wall piece down to the deck and trimming it off outside for fear of it leaking but was getting dry hits if i had wattage too high so i just did it the bunny rabbit ears style and tucked it in bit like yours but with more cotton, not had a dry hit yet and done a full 10 second blast at 35w like i can on the occ 0.5ohm but i will try this method next time and see if i can get even higher ;-)
oldskoolhead0 Good luck! And 10 seconds is one hell of a drag. That's awesome
its easy on the subtank as its airflow is quite restricted i could probably go longer if the battery allowed it lol
The way i determine if a youtube wicking method is good to go is listen for the awfull sound after a long draw. Like water on hot surface sound. That means a dry hit. No such sound in your video, wicking approved. Good job.

Hi .where is that video?😎😍
Also high cracking sounds as I start vaping?
what gauge for the wire would you recommend
when i fire mine at 20w (without the tank on, just wet cotton) it sounds like a damn machine gun. is that safe?
Is it even possible to get the new rba working with the default coils? I've tried like 3 different types of wicking and it just gets so wet I'm basically inhaling liquid. using 50/50 juice.
flappye hmm... what wattage are you running?
Vape Stuff with John tried everything from 15 up to 50
flappye It sounds like either a wicking issue or maybe you're missing an o-ring somewhere. Don't give up!
that's slurping sounds to me it leaked into the air chimney bad build them wicking ports whant blocking better than that
Where did you get the blue stand that holds the deck?
+Caleb Rogers 101vape
Brilliant! helped a lot thank you
Finally decided to try the rba to save some money and kept getting dry hits.
What wire are you using for your coils? Can you post a link please?
CanecaProductions That coil is triple twisted 32g kanthal, purchased here www.lightningvapes.com/products/kanthal-a1-resistance-wire
Thanks
How is it compared to the stock 0.5 ohm vertical OCC coil? Flavor wise and air flow wise
Wish I could tell you, but I haven't used the vertical OCC coils :(

Even my Lemo and Veritas cant handle that wattage. I'm thinking of rebuilding the OCC but it seems the new version is non rebuildable since we cant pop off the top part

P.S. No such thing as too much chain vaping.
+Roger Selsø very interesting. and very similair to the "Scottish roll" method I demo in my latest video! If you haven't already seen posts about it, check it out. It is unbelievable.
+Vape Stuff with John good review, liked the "scottish roll" (Y) and the dripper !!!
can that work that on a sub box mini kangerteck
How often are you re-wicking?
+Jim Kerkhoff I rewick ever few days. Four days would be kinda stretching it for me.
Where did you get your new mk2 rba from
kenneth humphrey I pulled it out of a Subox kit
Hi need your help please. I'm not getting any flavour. I am getting popping. I've used 31g kan ohm reading is 1.49 .. using itaste 3.0 pro. Still no taste... what am I doing wrong? ?
ive tried all sorted, will try again, I even struggled getting the dam wick in, then I had to cut it thin so that worked.
what's your coil ID..? i'd preferred to use 2.5 or 3mm ID.. easy to wick & better flavor..
+Azhir Ekmal Abd Rahman where do I buy them from?
no I mean, you need to re-coil by using 2.5mm or 3mm screwdriver..
+Mo Me --> never struggle with the wick, if u do then you're doing it wrong ;)
I always get spitting and boiling, what could I be doing wrong? Using 50/50 juice
x Jaffa Cake i guess the coil got space..try build a perfect one without space..
Thanks for reply, by space, do you mean air pockets around the coil?
+x Jaffa Cake to avoid spitting, u have to push down a bit the coils lower to the base, 3/4 of your coil compare to the rba pole..then wick it using this method, then its good to go tho.
+x Jaffa Cake i found that with a dual coil build, i get no spit back
Anyone know if popping means I have to much wick or not enough wick? Using Kanger subtank with the RBA, .5ohm kanthal coil it came pre-installed with. 80/20 juice running between 17-20 watts. Pops almost every hit I take. Any ideas?
+muskoka joel
Wick is too thin.
TIYX thank you
This is the way I have been doing it and it works great. I use max vg
that build leaks like a siv. it gurgle so bad I think my tank has pneumonia. sorry.
How many versions is there of ''Subtank mini?
Just 2, I believe
+Vape Stuff with John Thanks for your reply. Could you help me with: What is the difference between the old version and the new besides the juice holes are removed and moved to the RBA head?
Is there another drip tip? Are there improved air holes?
I have the new on, and i can't deside if I should buy the V2 or just stick with the old one, and just buy the RBA section from V2. To me it sounds there is no point in buying the whole thing, if they only changed the juice channels. I could just buy the RBA v2 part and use it in my old Subtank mini
Sean RobinsonJR I think the only non-cosmetic different is the RBA section. I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that's it.
Hi where did you get the new rba at ?
Jerome Hieb I pulled it from a new Subox kit. I've seen that there are some vendors beginning to sell them.
ok thank you

the hair
I don't like it version one is better imo

why didn't you do the vertical coil build with the RBA?
+Michael S way less flavor that way. Way way less. Try it yourself if you don't believe me. Also, it's not as easy/fast as this.
