  • Jim Jenkinson received a right Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) operation in 2010 performed by Mr McMinn. Jim shares his thoughts and physiotherapy progress in the immediate stages of recovery for the first three days after surgery.
This video is part one of a four-part documentary about Jim's rehabilitation. To see his updates from two-months, six-months and a year post-operation, please visit our website here: www.mcminncentr...
Jim Jenkinson works across the Midlands as a Regional Executive Officer for the YMCA. He likes to keep active and the former rugby player enjoys running, regularly taking part in the Great North Run. After playing five-a-side football with a group of dads, Jim started feeling pain in his right hip in 2007. Exploring his options, he was told by a consultant that he was too young for a total hip replacement but after speaking to a physiotherapist friend, he found out about the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) by Mr McMinn.
In 2010, Jim had a right BHR operation and spoke to us about his recovery process post-surgery. On day one, Jim had some light physio and exercises on his bed. To his surprise, this was followed by taking his first steps with the aid of a walking frame, only 24 hours after the operation. Day two started with a shower, then a physio session, quickly he was off the walking frame and onto crutches. Despite it being only a short time after surgery Jim felt there was "gradual progress being made."
By day three he was walking slowly with crutches up and down the corridor. He then went through the last set of exercises with the physiotherapist, including walking up the stairs. Jim underwent the necessary x-rays and ultrasounds before being given some important practical rehabilitation advice on things like getting into cars and sitting in suitable chairs.
Jim was very happy with the way his rehabilitation was going after his Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) operation. "The progress is really quite noticeable; you do feel more mobile by each half day."

Jim - glad your procedure went well and I appreciate your sharing your recovery experience. I am due to have the BHR in about two weeks or so and it is great to know what to expect during the recovery. Thanks!

Just wanted to tell you I had this surgery (both hips with dysplasia cup) about 3 yrs. ago. It is the best decision I ever made. I was in less pain during recovery (maybe a 3 out of 10) then prior to surgery, recover went extremely well, was off pain killers in a few days. The difference has been amazing and everything feels natural, best wishes!
