    It's a common Camino question....and fear. Does it worry you? Or if you walked alone, how was it for you?

  • @johnavery5384

    I think the big difference between walking alone or in a group is the people you meet. A group is more insular and this excludes, or reduces, interaction with random strangers. Being part of a group you always have people to talk to and deal with, such as “what is Spanish for Paracetamol?” I spent a week in France with my wife and another English couple, he spoke superb French and handled EVERY interaction. I felt like a two year old and started behaving like one. I didn’t need someone to order me a coffee but in saying so I was just being stroppy.
    So I walk alone but am never lonely. I have met so many interesting, unusual, etc. people along the way. Some you want to walk with for a while, enjoy a meal with, but you both know you can say goodbye without rancour.
    Another good discussion, thanks.

    When I originally conceived of doing the Camino several years ago, I always pictured doing it with a friend, but I quickly moved toward doing it alone. As an introvert, and also wanting to take in the Camino atmosphere and unexpected moments, I think I will have more than enough interaction with other people as I walk along and stay in the albergues. I do have some nervousness about just getting over to Europe and managing the planes and trains alone, but everyone seems to find their way to the start of their Camino.

      I can understand, if you are not used to International travel, it can seem a bit of a challenge. Particularly on your own. I enjoy it. It's all part of the Adventure. And being on my own, it's OK if I screw up and miss a bus or something. I have no one else to worry about. Just do lots of research on Google, so you know how to handle each key part of the journey. Finding the airport bus for Paris was one I needed to work out. What level t was on, what sign to look for, where to buy a ticket etc etc. Again, I find the planning all part of the adventure and it reduces anxiety when you travel, as you know what to expect and what to look out for.

    I was very fortunate to walk with a longtime friend who I hadn’t seen in 5 years... same height/stride length, age and general fitness levels (hers a bit better than mine). She had planned our trip and planned very short stages... best thing ever! We had great life discussions and caught up. But ours was 9 days, not 35!

    Good video Rob. I think it can be very, very problematic to walk with friends or in a group. Solo does give the freedom to take on the challenge at your own leisure. Some days though it is actually nice to have someone grab that water bottle for you from your pack without having to take the bag off! Or even someone else booking the next night accomodation ( the admin side of the Camino can be utterly exhausting).
    I got back Saturday from solo walk - Camino de Madrid to Sahagun then the Frances to Santiago- would not recommend quiet routes solo for a first timer that’s for sure. And contrary to what I had heard ,the Frances was not super busy. Extraordinary how many more albergues and pensions on the route since I was last there in 2015. Some towns like El Acebo are now huge and have have a dozen or so options to stay instead of 2 when there last time. Amazing.

    • @robscamino
      @robscamino  2 года назад

      Good to hear the Frances was not too busy. Maybe because of the heat? Yes, El Acebo has a lot of places to stay now. I've often wondered what that big new Albergue on the far side of town is like. Well not that new. Must be 8-9 years old now! We stayed in the Trout House last time through there. www.gronze.com/castilla-y-leon/leon/acebo-san-miguel#albergues

      @@robscamino yes we thought that too - the place is enormous and has spas and steam rooms but the wrong side of town. It looked completely empty when I walked past. I can’t se it surviving.
      I did notice the cost - the Madrid was super cheap being in rural ( very rural) areas . A cafe con leche €1.30 usually and on the Frances at least €2. Still some basic pensions for €30/€40 which I thought was reasonable on the Frances.

    Great topic Rob. The joy is that it’s completely up to you as a pilgrim. There are times you want to meet people & laugh & sing and then there are other times you just want to walk in your own thoughts. It’s your Camino. Take care

      Very true. And having that option and flexibility is so valuable. There are certainly times I just want to be a lone with my thoughts. Maybe for a day or two. Other times when some company is just what is needed.

    I walked alone on the trail about 50% of the time, new randomly met about 20% and those same people I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday with, the one's you actively plan to meet up with in certain towns and alberges the other 30% of the time.
    I left SJPDP alone, and didn't see anyone else outside the town until the route split, a young women, about 30, with sandles clapping away. I said hello, just hello and walked on. Grabbing breakfast day 2, I arrived the same time as a Danish guy, I let him order first and asked to sit with him, he said yeah, a young woman saw a big table with free space and asked to join us. We chatted for too long, as we left I realised it was the same woman as day one. Us three were together everyday until Santiago. Strange, almost like it's meant to be, first people I opened up to were the ones I spent most of my time with. All us three preferred to walk alone for the majority of the time, as walked at the same pace, liked same distances and had the same preferences in waking up time and always eating out.

      Those 'chance' meetings make the Camino journey very special don't they? 🙂

  • @CJonesApple

    I did the last 5km to town with many people of a tour group one day about two weeks in. They didn't know you could just turn up and get a bed, I had only booked the first night and none of the subsequent places. Also didn't know how I could carry my bag, it's easier than their day packs since I have a hip strap. I know personally that I would have less accomplishment felt as I look at a map with every town I slept in with a pin knowing that I walked from the first pin to the last with no transport every step was my own carrying exactly what's on my back stopping where I wanted to and when.

    • @robscamino
      @robscamino  2 года назад

      Great perspectives. And I suppose many people, like those you met, just go ahead and book a Camino 'tour' like a regular holiday. Not realising there are other ways to do it.....

  • @julianlord5366
    @julianlord5366 2 года назад +1

    Compromise isn't selfish.
    Apart from that, people you can walk with are those who have the same K distance more or less daily, and similar hourly, and whom you are temperamentally compatible with.
    I'd say though that it's a good idea to walk one alone, one in company, then any others according to taste.

      @CJonesApple 2 года назад +1

      I don't believe that one's pilgrimage is any less valid if walking with another or others. There's certainly argument to be made that many of the key takeaways I had would have been achieved if bot for every decision up to that point wasn't my own. Example, I tried to be as simple as possible only saying in the most basic accommodation, no intenet or listening to music on headphones the entire time. I totally appreciate the simplicity I put on myself but for none of those same reasons.
