You bring back memories of my Dad and I. I was fortunate enough to have grown up with a four bay Garage and a Junk yard. My Dad taught me how to fix anything that broke. Love watching you interact with your children.
I love watching you guys wrenching away on your vehicles. Reminds me of my father who was a shade tree mechanic and when I was a teenager being the youngest my job was to crawl under and undo the transmission and exhaust bolts. Paul...you shocked me with the prices you were quoted on tranny replacement. I miss the days of a rebuilt TH400 for around $400 to $500 bucks! Shows how old this old man is...LOL! Enjoying the content...
Prices are more shocking when you consider how flimsy this new GM stuff has become. Then again I've only had these kinds of problems on vehicles I purchased used over the past 50 years or so while the new ones I've purchased have lasted 20+ years with the body or frames rusting away well before there were any mechanical failures. With regular brake fluid, transmission fluid and coolant flushes I've never had to change a master cylinder, caliper, water pump, radiator, heater core or thermostat on a vehicle purchased new so a lot can be said of the benefits from following the severe service maintenance schedule. Brake flushes are easy since all you need is an extra pint of brake fluid and cooling system flushes just need some white vinegar and distilled water (50/50 mix with a literal drop of dish soap) followed with flushing with more plain distilled water. On all parts I look for the cheapest I can pickup locally that have a lifetime over the counter replacement warranty so if they ever fail I can just call and get a free replacement from a local parts store and only have to worry about the work of swapping things. Best!
I just paid $2k to have my diesel transmission gone through.......I pulled it and brought it to them. Cost another $1500 to have torque convertor shipped off and rebuilt.
I love that conversation between Shawn and Hunter where Hunter realizes when you work you can find yourself being good friends with someone that's twice your age and it's totally cool 🤣lol!
That is so true. Both sides benefit as the older ones share wisdom and the younger ones help the old guys stay young. I'm 70 and the guys I hang with outside of work are in their 20's and 30's. Actually, they have to rein me back 'cause I'm kind of a Hoonigan.

Paul you need a cleaning bay for all your stuff. Put a washer and dryer out there and wash all your rags and other stuff with oil on them. Save you a lot of money. And your old lift put it in that bay to so you can clean under your projects. Lord knows that truck need a lot of cleaning. That is a really nice free truck. Glad you are keeping it.

Fine job Fab Rats , you guy's are great all round mechanics. Plus welding, exhausts , and Fabrication. Thanks for the video guy's can't wait for the next one.
You guys are more than just fun to watch, you're also healing. Grew up in a rough situation, and I still marvel at the amount of work you put into things just for your kids to drive, and knowing that this is just a tiny snippet of all the things you do to help your kids succeed in life. Hope your kids appreciate just how good they have it. This is how family is supposed to be.
I am 80 yo, grew up wrenching on cars with only hand tools, jack stands, out side in all kinds of weather, a "shade tree mechanic". The time saved in today's world with battery operated tools is amazing. Makes major repairs so much easier and can be done in so much less time. With a shop like Paul's with lifts and other tools equipment almost a joy to work on cars/trucks.
Amen. I’m 81 and used Sears tools, best at the time, hand tools and crummy wrenches that ate knuckles. Electric and air tools have changed the dynamics of car repair. Busting lug nuts and pulling tires was always tough. Tube tires are also classic. Tires today just go flat. Now, with a tube tire you actually get a righteous “bang”. Anyone remember “Mickeys”? They were add on Mickey Mouse white walls. Tire goes bang and Mickey takes off ahead of you. Fun from the ‘50’s.
Super lucky to be able to work with your kids. I worked with my Dad as a kid and young adult. Some of my best memories of him. I try to do as much with my kids in the garage as I can and everywhere else. They will remember it the rest of their lives especially when you're gone.
You know Landon has come a long way from when he started coming on video. He came off as a bit of a brat, but now he is more comfortable on camera and you can see he really is a nice young man. Love the channel and love to hear Michelle singing.
99% of teenagers are brats. My biggest accomplishment in life is not ending my offspring when they were teenagers. Now I get to watch my offspring try not to end their teenagers. Priceless.
@@rootwsprcful It is a grandparent's revenge. My youngest daughter (2/2) came to us and said "remember when you said I'd have a kid just like me? Your granddaughter is worse than I was." Her mom and I just laughed. Spoil your grandkids, send 'em home, watch the fireworks.
A construction company I worked for had a whole fleet of these 90's Chevy trucks that all had over 300k miles on them with all original drivetrain. If you change the transmission filter and fluid every 30k like they recommend and don't wait until it slips they will last a long time.
Yup. I owned a 1999 VW from when it had 200k miles to over 400k when I sold it. Regular fluids and service items and it ran better than much lower mileage stuff that hadn't received the care. Then there is just the lottery of some having perfect reliability and others that are constant headaches. Happens to all brands. Paul just seems to have the worst luck with transmissions.
Unfortunately somebody started the myth that changing transmission fluid was bad for them. Zero truth in that idea. But also changing fluid will NOT fix a slipping/broken/worn-out transmission. Test drive. Does it slip, flare or skip shifts? Needs rebuilt. If the shifts are soft/late, drop pan and see what's on the magnet. If it looks like Phyllis Diller's wig, it's junk. If not much junk in pan, change filter and top off with fluid. Drive 500ish miles and if working OK...do it again. Gets more of the old fluid out. Or have a fluid exchange done right after filter change. A "flush" does NOT have to include ANY chemical additions. Just pump 12-16 quarts of fluid thru. Makes a huge difference.
Right? I grew up in the NE and now live in the SW, and my Frontier that I bought out here brand new has literally not a spec of rust. It’s 11 years old and everything is as sound as can be. That alone makes it worth never getting rid of and just driving and fixing.
This was in its own unique way a great video... Seeing Landon doing a great job working on the "free truck" Seeing Hunter talk about the age of people you work with, that you recreate with, that you trust and confide in can be of all ages, Seeing Paul starting to stand back and letting his son and Shawn pick up the load, Seeing Grandma Lolli making an appearance.... sassy as ever.... Great show !!!
Paul, a heads up when using torque sticks for tightening lug nuts. You have to really hammer on them not short bursts. Do a test after using it and check with a torque wrench .... I had a customer call me the next day saying I left off one of the lug nuts so I drove there to check and all the lug nuts were loose. I have never used a torque stick since then.
I gotta say Paul you crack me up!!!The whole shop is like an improv I mean that in the most sincere way we love watching you guys! I wanted to say I have never seen anyone with the mad fabrication skills you have Paul keep up the good work!!!

You guys don't know how lucky you are that you have all that old steel out there that doesn't rust away. Haven't seen one of those trucks in Ontario Canada in probably 15 years. 10 to 15 years max out of a vehicle here. My truck's 3 years old and it has more rust on it than that truck and yes I undercode it.
I've seen you guys rebuild engines before, if you can rebuild an engine you can rebuild an automatic transmission. I recently gave it a try myself for the first time and rebuilt a 4L60E and honestly it turned out not being very hard and only cost a couple hundred bucks. And us viewers would probably be very entertained watching you give it a go. Just a thought for your next transmission issue.
I need to do all of that to my old Dodge. What an undertaking. But, having a lift really helps the situation. I like that Landon carrys a bunch of stuff in his pockets. I do to. I have a knife, mini channel lock pliers, lighter, change, guitar picks, you know, important stuff!🤪
Paul - a proper snow blade with hydraulic hook up to the tractor will change your life. I have one on a little Kubota. Works great! And you can tilt it all the way down and use the angles to do some road edge work in the summer. Well worth the cost!
Just realized that this trans is the old 700, aka MD8. Good luck with that stuck throttle valve in the valve body. Make sure that the TV cable is adjusted " correctly ".
My 97 has 280k and original transmission it has code transmission components slipping, its been a work truck its whole life, family of Carpet installers, I have been installing for home depot since 2005. Love your show
Watching Paul bang his head against a hoist arm was probably my favorite part of the video. Only because as a dealer tech it happens daily sometimes. I feel ya brother
29:00 as far as putting new bushings in the door hinges, I've held the door up using an engine hoist with straps around the upper window frame, worked great.
Best of luck with that 700R4 I put 9 in my 89 z71. 5 was rebuilds 1 was gm good wrench 3 was from salvage yard 4 of them went out with stock tires the rest it was on 35’s.trans number 10 fixed it.I bought a wrecked 92 3/4 ton From a guy that bought it for the motor I gave $150 for what was left swapped in all the 5speed an running gear from that truck never had a problem again.
Get a piece of pipe insulation (the largest). Put it on the lift corner on the post and then bend over the bottom of the arm. Use zip ties to hold them on and for easy replacement when they get dirty
I have a 2001 Chevy Z71 4x4 with the original 5.3 and original transmission with 240k miles runs and drives great. Finally had to replace the u-joints in the front drive shaft
I would put a plow on one of the abundant 4X4 trucks you have like this OBS or the Wood truck, before I would ever put it on an open cab tractor with no heat. It already has a bucket which helps pile the snow and dig out better. It also can collect more with less slide off. If you make it big enough like 10-12 foot it might be worth it. Take it from someone who plowed for years and would shovel walks. That heater on your frozen snowy feet when you get back in the cab is heavenly.
I would love to buy that truck for my daughter. It would give her 3 years to fix it up for when she starts driving. Awesome show. Keep up the great work
Now you guys need to thank Paul for having a building to work in, with power and heat. Because I have helped a friend do exactly what you are doing here, except we only had a floor jack, 2 jack stands, no building, just a dirt driveway. And it was a balmy +45°f outside and cloudy. It took us at least 6 hours of fighting that pos Ford to get everything out that you guys did in an hour or so. And just to make it interesting, God decided to give us a snow storm just as we were putting it back together. 9 hours after we started it was back together and drivable and we had 7 inches of snow in about an hour and a half. But by God we got it done, and he never had any trouble with it again before he sold it and made about $1,000 from the sale. Stay safe boys and be very thankful for everything you have.
I love your videos, but I would love to see more of "Grader" projects! I know he can't drive yet but all your boys do cool stuff and would love to see more. Ya'll are the best, thank you for the videos!

I wish Grandma Fab Rat could get involved in one of ur crazy builds....😂😂😂😂😂
thanks for letting us hang out in the shop with you today. I really appreciate the geological tour of that crossmember, pretty funny
Man!!!!!! that's a bad day 3 times in 3 minutes. That socks and you handled it Really great !!!!!!
Oh man, I love these OBS trucks! She's worth putting money in it. 👍
Nice to see the new (old) transmission worked out and all the other front end parts took care of everything else.
Age is just a number but I’m older than Shaun and Hunter put together. Thanks for making me old 😁
Really enjoy this type of content. Taking old and making new. Thank you
Class of '85 here, you guys are young pups.
I'm amazed you didn't do the crank rear main when you had the box off,
looking at all the other leaks it had, 🤣😂
dont forget door seals when you do the door. Will help a ton. plus help your bushings last longer.
Sean’s just a young lad!
Would never have guessed that lol
Poor Paul, wacking his head twice?! I would have had more choice words than what he said.
Love your content - you guys are awesome!
When Shawn asked Landon how high he planned to jump the truck was awesome!!
Good job as always! Self tapping sheet metal screws work great for popping seals out. Much easier than trying to stab with a screw driver.
OMGoodness, I thought I was the only one to hit my head, glad it's not just me! Watch for hitch receivers with draw bars, they really smart too!
Been a subscriber for quite a while. I’m sensing a correlation between Landon and broken trucks. He’s had 4-5 trucks that have needed “some work”.
29:00 as far as putting new bushings in the door hinges, I've held the door up using an engine hoist with straps around the upper window frame, worked great.
Paul you are an awesome dad and have a wonderful family!
Man we need a vehicle count for the team and family. Love these old trucks! Keep up the great work!
hey paul, you might want to check out safety inlets for normal hats. those are gold! that layer of thin platic can make such a huge difference...
Class of 09 and now I know why I like Shawn so much
I have a 2001 Chevy Z71 4x4 with the original 5.3 and original transmission with 240k miles runs and drives great. Finally had to replace the u-joints in the front drive shaft
I never know what you guys are gonna be working in when I tune in you never disappoint it's always fun watching you guys work
My 97 F250HD has a 460/7.5L with automatic, 230,000 and nothing changed but lifters and 1 bent pushrod!!
Definitely build a snow blade. That would be a fun project to watch.
Sean is such a fun quiet guy! Love the vibe!
Just about need to compile a head knock file, I laughed heaps the second time Paul knutted himself.
No matter what rebuildable part you buy for the price. It's all about the person or company that does it. 😊👍
Landon is one Lucky kid. I only had access to one vehicle, my 73 half ton from 16 to 22 and had to fix everything myself along the way…
I love your videos, but I would love to see more of "Grader" projects! I know he can't drive yet but all your boys do cool stuff and would love to see more. Ya'll are the best, thank you for the videos!
With those transmission quotes, seems to me someone around the shop should be the transmission guy. Would be priceless content, Hunter teaching Paul about transmissions. 😂
