His dad was a lot more energetic and exciting but Jr did have the same hair, same stubby nose and face. He had the same profile as his dad. I was reading some of the other posts and now Jr has passed on.
I've been sitting here in tears thinking ever since Don Mclean started talking about when he wrote AMERICAN PIE and the 1 thing I wonder over and over and can't seem to get off my mind is okay we made a movie about Buddy and a movie about Ritchie-we made sure their stories were told and their voices heard-why has noone considered making a movie about The Big Bopper-tell his story and let people know and make them aware that he was just as important,let his voice be heard and tell the story.
Out of everyone's family, I think the Big Bopper's son had the hardest time coping with his father's death. Everyone else had memories with Buddy and Ritchie but Big Bopper Jr never knew his father. He spent his whole life trying to figure out who his father was. He only got a little bit of information. It must have been hard for him trying to figure out what was true or not about his father. But he did closure. He got his father exhumed in 2007 and that was enough for him to get closure about his father's death. The Big Boppers x-ray was available online one time, but the website is no longer available. The Big Bopper Jr saw his father around his mid 40's while his father laid in his casket at 28.

ALSO, JP Richardson (The Big Bopper) wrote and performed on Johnny Preston's No.1 hit in 1960, "Running Bear"; and wrote and performed on George Jones' first sizeable hit, 1959's "White Lightning". So, as Big Bopper, Jr. says, his father IS (indeed) more than "just a footnote" to the deaths of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. The Big Bopper IS a tragic loss to Rock'n'Roll too. This piece was not only done professionally and accurately, but also with immense respect for ALL THREE involved. The majority of all documentaries dealing with this story, somehow always seem to push Holly to the front, leaving the other two as mere incidental. All three were beautiful spirits, with immense talent, and should be treated, respectively, as such. As an example, we have the '78 movie with Gary Busey, and the '87 movie with Lou Diamond Phillips, but no movie at all for The Bopper.
Say whatever you want about VH1 nowadays, but Behind The Music was one of the best I’ve ever saw and I definitely would love to see a movie about the Big Bopper.
I thought it was so ironic when I was young, I loved “Peggy Sue” by Buddy Holly. Then in 1978, I started watching “The Dukes Of Hazzard” and I absolutely loved “Good ‘ol Boys” by Waylon Jennings, still do, and found out many years later that he was actually the bass player for Buddy, and to top it off, he was Buddy’s last bass player and played bass on the very last song that Buddy Holly ever performed. Waylon was awesome, no one could have cast a better voice as the narrator of “The Dukes Of Hazzard” either.

It's touching to see this again. My grandma showed me this. It was incredible to see my grandma's reaction when they talked about Buddy at the end. I think he was the only person other than my grandpa she ever had a crush on.

The six episodes of “the day the music died” is one of the very best documentaries I’ve ever seen, and yet probably the most tragic and sad. I had more than a few lumps in my throat and tears flowing down my face.
I have seen Connie at The Winter Dance Party at the Surf Ballroom several times. She has a jacket embroidered “Forever 17” Since this video was posted, JR has passed on, too.
For all of us born too late to experience that period or time in music when those 3 were on top, all we have are documentary's like these to take us back as if we were there, but as for the family and friends of these guys, it's probably very hard to believe that it has been 53 years since that horrible day!
It’s always sad and tragic when famous people die, but for some reason this story is particularly tragic. There is something haunting about the freezing cold, snow-covered corn field- almost a lonely feeling. Maybe it’s because of the “last minute” decisions that were made? Almost like it was NOT fate, and it WASNT supposed to happen this way.

I wasn't even born when this tragedy happened, 1961 was my time. But I remember my older brother playing Buddy Holly's music in our basement in the mid 1970's. Heartbeat was one of the songs that I started to play over and over, such a great song. Earlier in this show, the Rolling Stone writer said that this accident nearly put Rock and Roll down, and I think he was right. It truly wasn't until 1964 when the Beatles arrived did it start to come back. I still wonder from time to time, WHAT IF?
The Big Bopper as well as being a music star, was first a popular DJ, and later came up with the term "music video" and had plans to create them and a music video machine like a jukebox that would play the videos.

This episode 6 is beyond sad, what a huge loss to Rock & Roll music. They were so young, especially Ritchie & Buddy. Their flight should never have happened, atrocious weather conditions, considering this was a small plane. Apart from the weather conditions, it was the the middle of the night which meant poor visibility and the fact that the pilot was inexperienced. A large part of the blame must fall on the owner of the plane for this tragedy. I’m convinced that Jerry Dwyer (the owner) never got over this for the rest of his life.
