the real reason he hits himself is because if you are heavily injured, your heart goes in survival mode, basically adrenaline. since his spirit is durable enough, he can handle blows with only the strength of mind. he gets stronger each hit because he gets more adrenaline.
Pretty sure that's also due to his insane physique...him geting adrenaline is like drugging a bear with sugar and honey with chocolate
for anyone wondering why he didn't show twinblade rush, twinblade rush is not in the anime, it was a custom move from the devs.

If you can’t find lethal whirlwind stream in anime it actually based on the last attack that garou used on tank top master (he just hold tank top master head and drag him into the wall)

Did you know that if you do a grand slam while another person is doing a grand slam you can hit them midair and do the uptilt version but sometimes you will get hit instead of your opponent

THE REAL REASON why he's smashing his head is because in the anime there's a sleeping gas that makes metal bat unconscious while getting barraged by the centipede so he hits himself on the head to gain adrenaline and to stay awake on the sleeping gas I think

Yo btw, on sonic's ultimate, the 2nd and 3nd ability (Straight on and Carnage) are cannon abilities he even uses in anime (not sure the episodes tho), Carnage being an Ability he uses, originally named "Carnage of Hell", and "Straight on" its actually the right name ability
