Guys When The Lady Presses the Stop Button The Story is Left off at a "Cliffhanger"- which means the writer has made suspense for the readers and curosity to know what's next.

The door sealed them in; the elevator started up. “Hello, Martin,” she said, and laughed,and pushed the stop button…
So this is real ending
Martin started to panic. He pounded his fists against the elevator door while yelling, “Help me! Get me out of here!” But it was no use. No one could hear him. The fat lady just laughed. “It’s okay Martin, don’t be afraid.” Martin tried to back away but there was no where to back away. He then noticed the alarm button. He tried to reach over and press it but the fat lady blocked it. But since the elevator was so small she ended up pressing the button with her own back. An alarm started ringing and just seconds later Martin could hear voices. “Don’t worry we’ll get you out of there! Just hang on!” Martin was terrified. What if they weren’t able to get him out? What if he plunged to his death? Just then the fat lady grabbed him, put her hand over his mouth and whispered, “When those people finally get the elevator door open you will be lying on the ground, dead.” Martin started screaming but he knew no one could hear him. The fat lady continued, “But they’ll think that you just had a heart attack. You were just so terrified. And they’ll think that I tried to save you but failed. Oh it’ll be such a tragedy.” Martin tried to escape from her grip but the fat lady wouldn’t let him go. Martin realized that this was the end. He would never see his father again. Then he realized that he wasn’t breathing as well as he was supposed to. The fat lady was chocking him. Martin started gasping for air, his face was becoming as red as a tomato. But just then the elevator started moving. Was he going to be saved? Was this not going to be the end after all? ” Looks like I’ll have to make this quick. No time for torture.” The fat lady said. She then pulled out a pocket knife. Martin gasped, sweat trickling down his face. At that moment the elevator door opened. The fat lady gasped and tried to hide the pocket knife, but it was no use the men saw it. They instantly grabbed Martin out of the elevator. The fat lady tried to escape but the men trapped her back inside the elevator and called the police. Martin was still trying to catch his breath. He couldn’t believe what had just happened. One of the men then said, “The police are on their way. Don’t worry you’re safe now.”
Meanwhile the fat lady had figured out that she could just go to another floor and escape. She pressed the button leading to the first floor, but little did she know that the police would be there waiting for her. Minutes later she was in handcuffs. Martin, his father, and the other two men just watched as she got shoved into a police car. Martins father thanked the police and the two men. The police then left, taking the fat lady with them.
After that Martin wasn’t afraid to take the elevator anymore. He still sometimes thinks that the fat lady might be waiting for him in the elevator. One time he actually thought he saw her! But then he blinked his eyes and shook his head and realized it was just a hallucination, or was it really?

I think that.... the women is just Martin's hallucinations because Martin was claustrophobic (which means fear of enclosed places ) which also clarifies that why martin was scared of the Elevator and that's why he sees the fat lady who always stares at him continuously with her piggy eyes which causes him not to breath as she was fatlady.......which can be attack of his phobia which he has and due to his phobia he always saw hallucinations in the form of the fatlady

It might be that this is Martin's hallucination. Because in the whole story we came to know about Martin's dislike about that elevator. It might be that the old lady was Martin's imagination or the symbol of fear. In the whole story the old lady came in front of Martin when he was alone . So I think that it is Martin's fear which is symbolised through the old lady. And at the last part he overcomes his fear and that's why he saw the lady press the stop button.
