What a consummate artiste! She was an actress first with every fibre of her being and then a coloratura to boot with runs, roulades, trills and coloratura weaponry that others could only dream of! And such a humble lady who answered every single one of my MANY letters to her and always had a kind and encouraging word to say! Bravissima! We miss you.
Every time I listen to her arias I found myself in tears. Such an art, voice and taste will seldom be equated. God bless you in Heaven and eternal peace for your soul. THANKS MS SILLS
Yes....perfect trill....and everything else. She was phenomenal....delicate sounding, fragile sounding......no one else could transmit such pathos. She and Sutherland were the best.
Beverly at the top of her game singing stupendously well and incomparbly! I just L O V E the audiences appreciation of this lesson scene and of course that HIGH E#!!!!!! Brava la Fenomena and Thank you James for a glorious upload!!!!
E natural yes! She could sometimes sing an F but it was pinched and unreliable. In her recording of Lucia in the duet with her brother she sings high F at the end!
And Sills's voice was easily heard in a large auditorium, her voice was not small at all. Perfectly placed with clear and ringing harmonics from bottom to extreme top. Unlike so many light soprani today who can't be heard and ruin their voices after 10 years.
operabilia Sills voice was very normal sized or a small medium size. But brilliant and had superior carrying power. Carrying power and size of voice are not related. Sills had a beautiful voice for any size. Kiri te Kenowa said she had a very LOW projection rate, and her voice was a full big medium size.
That was no mere mortal singing here folks, that was God Almighty himself using Beverly Sills as his vessel of sound, it is just incredible singing!!!!
Not only does she sing a glorious high E, but she also runs all the way up to G above high C at the 03:01 mark. It's shrieked rather than sung, but it's there, and it's the highest note I've ever heard from her. It's interesting that for a voice that sounds centered so high, she did not have exceptional facility with extreme top notes. She herself said her batting average with the Queen of the Night's high F's was 4 out of 5. Even some of her High E flats in the 70's had a brittle quality to them (though I love that she did them anyway). That said, she did interpolate a high F in one of the duets in her studio Lucia, and her high E here is beautiful.
I read in an article when she studied with Estelle Liebling she could only vocalize to G above C. That's why her high F's were unpredictable. You must be able to vocalize a third able the note to count on it being there.
Hopefully everyone knows this was a "protest" performance.... Sills wanted to sing this at City Opera, but Rudel said no, because Sutherland was singing it at the met.... So, Sills rented out Carnagie Hall for this performance........ and this is the result.......
Her vocal abilities are unmatched to this day..I would mention also my favorite still rest her soul Montserrat Cabell Emily DiAngelo and Cecilia Bartolli however, Cecilia Bartolli cannot match the beautiful warmth in tone and intonation that Beverly Sills possessed. Montserrat however, had a different perfection an ethereal angelic heavenly full control that seemed to float on air you never felt the sharp or stuttered start of a note never jolted never unintentional single note or accent her tone and resonance seemed to float through the air and into the ears and directly into the souls of her audience...the beauty of her high notes are unmatched...not belted not for volume but sung with every bit of emotion the composer meant to convey listening to her sing swept you away with her to a different place space and time...close your eyes and feel her voice just breathing all that is right with this world and your connection and deepest appreciation for having this good karma this beautiful gift of her voice in your lifetime you were blessed to experience. Opera is and should forever remain respected not blended with new age this or that...not turned into something the trendsetters can relate to...my feeling is this...if you cannot feel moved by a symphony playing The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, also known as the, Moonlight Sonata, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven.....and you are not choking back tears or gulping hard and finding yourself lifted away with every note....if you listen to O Mio Babbino Caro and you dont feel your heart aching relating to those rebellious teen years and your true love then you have no business suggesting what is golden is not gold enough you cannot guild the Lily...and you may be missing good sense good taste education and refinement possibly some mental disorders involving serious inability to relate to anyone or anything other than yourself, detachment disorder sociopathic spectrum. I have to be honest...the warmth of a viola brightened by the high notes of a well played violin and gently embraced by the deep tones of the cello...these are the vital life giving gifts given by those who work tirelessly to perfect their talent and skill...a great musician is able to pull you from your existence into their passionate communication of each note from the deepest sorrowful anguish to the highest heigth of pure joy.....because otherwise, it becomes only notes on a paper each note may be executed perfectly, but if passion respect adoration and devotion to the beautiful intent of each and every note and meaning for each note is absent .....there is no beauty no reciprocation no conversation between orchestra each instrument the musicians the conductor or the audience..I implore anyone who feels an aversion toward opera symphony or any classical music, please ...attend a performance at a performing arts center or opera house and sit center and bring your binoculars...and might i suggest a handkerchief.

The pronounced difference between a singer and an ARTIST! Bravissima, Beverly!!!
Every time I listen to her arias I found myself in tears. Such an art, voice and taste will seldom be equated. God bless you in Heaven and eternal peace for your soul. THANKS MS SILLS
She always performed live so much better than on studio recordings. That E natural was excellent!

Amazing~! The coloratura from 2:00 ~ 2:11 ...come on, only Bubbles~! BRAVA
So much fun, and that final high E was FABULOUS!
Espectacular!!!
Absolutely glorious!
Magnificent singing and interpretation.
I think this was Sills at her absolute BEST!!!! Those trills should have been patented!!!! No one else has ever been able to trill like her!!! RIP!
A reasonable facsimile maybe.
This was a "protest" performance? I LOVE THAT! And, evidently, so did the audience!
And the late, great Muriel Costa-Greenspon is perfectly hilarious as Marie's 'Aunt.'
My favorite in Daughter of the Regiment.
Trascendentale ,oltre ,infinita !!! Una meraviglia ,unica !
Wunderschone Damme ! Brawissimo ! Braeississimo !
Just wonderful ...
I thought this is one of her best roles. She could really have fun in yes opera!
Leontyne Price was quoted as saying “ Beverly Sills can do things with a ‘scale’ that no one else can do!”
The perfect trill, only Sills.
And Sills's voice was easily heard in a large auditorium, her voice was not small at all. Perfectly placed with clear and ringing harmonics from bottom to extreme top. Unlike so many light soprani today who can't be heard and ruin their voices after 10 years.
well said and absolutely true !!

Beverly Sills had to be the finest coloratura I have ever heard!
and she was pretty too wow what talent
That was no mere mortal singing here folks, that was God Almighty himself using Beverly Sills as his vessel of sound, it is just incredible singing!!!!
Here here...agreed..well said...well said Kerry..
This is a great performance all around. Let us not also forget however the great trill ladies of Selma Kurz and Joan Sutherland,
Not only does she sing a glorious high E, but she also runs all the way up to G above high C at the 03:01 mark. yes! the correct place of the trill is the same of the bubble, is true?
Hopefully everyone knows this was a "protest" performance.... Sills wanted to sing this at City Opera, but Rudel said no, because Sutherland was singing it at the met.... So, Sills rented out Carnagie Hall for this performance........ and this is the result.......
How interesting to know .... I have always been curious to know how the relationship was between Sutherland and Sills?
Not true! She did this with Rudel and the City Opera in 1975...
@@randysills4418 FWI: She sang it in 1975, yes, but the Carnegie Hall gig was 5 years before that.
