  • Hello folks, welcome to our RUclips homesteading journey!
We live in Central Victoria, Australia, on an off-grid property where we grow our food, raise animals and live lightly on this earth.
A little update on the garden after the hail storm and me starting potatoes in pots.
    Thanks for watching!

Im sorry about your plants. Thats hard. I hope your sunshine was enough to get the appliances working for you .
We're sick here so im literally doing just the minimum to keep the family and animals fed , i can hardly do anything in the garden yet. Yesterday i transplanted 3 small rosemary and thats it , today i did one perennial onion but managed to move greywater hoses and water 3 small trees. Not a single seed or plant is in the garden for Spring despite the goid weather, if dry. The seeds i planted in the rollerboxes have had less than half germinate then some are looking rough from the temp fluctuations and my chaotic care because of sickness. I guess im trying to say that we all have challenges whether at the beginning of this season, middle or harvest end. I know that we'll both grow some things and harvest good food at the end. Chin up lovely 😊 Thank you for sharing the real ,sometimes hard but always worthwhile side of gardening life. I hope your potatoes thrive for you too. ❤❤

@@countrymousesfarmhouse497 so sorry to hear you’ve been unwell. It’s so hard to run a household let alone a homestead when you’re sick. I hope you all recover swiftly and feel your energy return.
Thank you for your kind words. There is always something that can happen when gardening and it’s good to be truthful and work through your feelings. I feel so much better for it and ready to face my garden again this weekend.
      Take care my friend ❤️❤️

Hi, I’ve just discovered your channel and hope to watch more!
Can I ask about your no dig watering methods? I see you have drippers….in the past, I’ve used newspaper and straw, but have found the straw to be so thirsty. I can literally water for an hour (overhead) but the soil underneath remains bone dry.
How does everything break down when straw can be so difficult…
    Looking forward to learning more!

Hi Natalie, so glad you found my channel! I have two videos on the no-dig so far which are recent videos, so have a look at them.
I just use compost and manure on my beds and straw in the pathways. I don’t use mulch other than compost/manure and haven’t for years now. I find the top layer of manure keeps the moisture in.
      I hope that helps!
      Thanks for watching! 🌻

It's like gambling. I always get eager at this time of year & make a few mistakes.
It is best to always have starters & and backups in your house/ greenhouse.
I'm interested to see how your potatoes go, I let mine dry out for a couple of days after I cut them. I think it's called 'heeling'?

@@dawniebee946 I see so many people planting their summer veg out now and I have to remember that it’s not our time yet.
I’ve never heard of that with cutting potatoes. I’ve been doing it this way for over ten years and they always work, but I’m interested in looking into this. Thanks!

Sorry about your hail, gut wrenching. I always thought you weren’t supposed to lime potatoes.

Thanks, the gardening game can be pretty hard going. I’m using lime to fix the lack of calcium, but shall look into it. Thanks for raising that! 🌻

The best thing about potatoes in pots is no digging to harvest them - just tip them over on a tarp. From my unscientific experiments I have found that my potatoes in pots prefer blood & bone to fish emulsion and the only thing I've found that doesn't like seaweed extract is liliums. I saw in one of your comments that you wanted to add lime for the calcium - can't remember at the moment what the difference is, but remember that there is garden lime and then there is dolomite when you do your research. For the time being maybe just add some crushed egg shells from your chooks until you have time for that. Couldn't help but notice that you were more smiley and relaxed after a little gardening and sunshine so wishing you some Peace until you have more opportunity to enjoy both of these good things.

Thank you so much for your tips and advice. I did feel so much better after some gardening.
I completely forgot about blood and bone. I’ll definitely put that on and I think I just started to ramble in the funny state I was in because I don’t think I’ll be using lime. I use gypsum or dolomite to fix the calcium levels in my garden usually, but I think I’ll leave it out of the pots. I’ll wait until the green shoots pop up and amend if needed. Thanks again! You always have great suggestions 🌻

@@ThreeBarrowFarm Thank you for your lovely message, but I'm really here to learn from you. My knowledge is limited to my favourite things and potatoes are my most loved veg. If you do use blood and bone try to remember to change it for something with higher potassium/lower nitrogen like dynamic lifter for the last quarter of its growth to encourage the tubers to be bigger. I mostly remember that I missed that step once I'm looking at smallish potatoes during harvest. :(
