Oh my word, I haven't enjoyed a video as much as this in sooo long :) I think you did a stunning job. I even went out and bought some pound shop glasses just now after watching this so I can attempt my own version! I really enjoy your videos but this one is a stunner. Keep up the great work and enjoy that headset! (I hope you play Elite Dangerous wearing that, one day I too will be wearing one just like it)
This, my dear sir, is one of the best, if not THE best videos on DIY VR I've ever seen. I enjoyed very much your laid back and often quite humourous narrative, the down-to-earth explanations, and most of all, I appreciate you sharing your experiences along all the steps which you took to rnd up with what must be one of the coolest yet still reasonably practical VR headsets on the planet,... because you built it. You yourself. Many thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed watching, and appreciate you taking the time to tell me. Some people don't get why I made the video, so it feels good to get comments from those who do :)
You are a smart guy who deserves a price for that. Honestly.... it even looks with tape all around futuristic and nice, like an alien head! And there is only a tablet, some cardboard, a helmet, two metal sticks and a box with nails in there, cased by tape. That's so awesome!!!
really enjoyed watching this .. just goes to show that with a little bit of ingenuity and a lot of gaffa you can make just anything you put your mind to .. brilliant vid :)
Nice going! Proves once again that you can fix anything with gaffa, even when things aren´t broken at all :) Had my cardboard delivered yesterday. It´s quite impressing but not nearly as comfortable as an oculus rift. I´m honestly thinking about building my own version for 30 bucks max. I am aiming on lowering the weight by using smaller displays and customized lenses and focal points. Really looking forward to having google develop this one with contact lenses. Thanks a lot because you finally got my son into handicrafts when watching this! :)
You should try this with a kindle fire, I'll try putting my own designs together for it so you can print out a cardboard template and try it for yourself, but a design for a device that's reasonably cheap and fairly accessible has the potential to blow up quite quickly.
There's little reason to have it so clunky. A bike helmet is better than a hard hat, not all are big and bulky (and bike helmets usually fit better). His current design would be flimsy and would shift and flip while being used. 19:00 shows exactly that. Some discuss adding a counter weight. Its stability isn't simply because its heavy, it's the overall design. Then again even when this was made Google cardboard was out as noted. If needed could have just adapted a pair.
I have a 7,5" phablet with 6,4" screen, it is very big for the cardboard and I hated it. the problem with a bigger screen is that the centers of the two images will be much wider so the optics should be tweaked in order to make it work. The distance between the eyes is 6,5cm for myself and the bigger the screen, the wider the centers are so it needs to see the size of the screen and play it on center without making it full screen or something. Or use only a portion of the screen as if it was a 5" phone or something.
***** Nah, it is a chinese product named ViewSonic, it has 1280x720 screen, I couldn't see good 3D with it (I did one photo myself and it kinda worked) but I could see the pixels alright. The phone itself is a deal for 80$ that I got it. But you cannot see 3D with the typical visors and applications.
Awesome, great determination! I had the same issue as you, my phone does not have gyros, but I got KindleFireHDX with the nice 7" screen and FullHD+ screen. I managed to solve the weight issue like this - simply take stronger lenses then you tablet will sit much closer to your face. I got ColorCross, so the lenses can be easily unscrewed. The tablet is very close to my face, but the next iteration will be those lenses + reading glasses and even closer to your face.
Thing is, there's more to it than just the strength of the lenses. I have a pair that'll let me have the screen almost touching my nose, but your eyes have to be able to both look at a certain area of the screen, and if it's too close, that becomes impossible, and you just get double vision.
***** I know what you are talking about. I have Durovis dive lenses and Cardboard lenses too and they are too strong. The Colorcross ones thugh are just perfect for the job.
you could mod the spinning chair with plank on the back of chair and hang an elastic rope between helmet(on center) and plank on the top, so that you lose a weight of helmet
braa It was just trial and error. I tried moving them closer and further apart, till I found the distance that would allow me to view stuff really close, and still be able to bring the image from each eye together.
Thank you so much for this video! From soul to have fun! laughter prolongs life! Himself forward delivery of my 7" tablet to get started. Instead of screws recommend using battery power bank for Tablet
Kng Sz A battery pack is a good suggestion, but unfortunately, on my tablet, this would use the same USB socket as is required for the joypad controller. It would certainly work on other systems that can use a bluetooth joypad though :)
PlayingAndroidBadly Now if you just added a couple of cup holders to hold some ale, it would be perfect. Great video! I like to see how other people build things. Good Job.
I could not think why you did not think about mounting the headset using springs on a rotating eye bolt in the ceiling. After some tweaking it would be weightless.
I've been trying to work thi bugger out for my own 7 inch tabet but only saw youtubes for phones this was madly informative and fun. san you post what aps you are using in the description? We must be related by tinkerererererer blood.
i think the real breakthrough is with google glass hud in the lens.....they just havent put that 2 + the 2 of google cardboard/oculus rift. now that i typed this, you may see a spark at google on this...
+DaGURUMASTA It's a lot like wearing a full face crash helmet, in that it doesn't fill your peripheral vision, but still feels believable. Pixels aren't an issue. It's way better than the MK2 Oculus Rift I tried once in terms of visible pixels.
Great effort! I was thinking you went a little too far with the box of screws.... What's the Tab weigh?? But anywho, What kind of work do you do? Any prototyping??
The screws were necessary to balance the thing, otherwise it would just tip forwards. Someone prepared to take the tablet apart could perhaps have balanced it by putting the battery at the back, but that's my day to day tablet, so it wasn't an option. No idea what the weight is, though it's far from the lightest. I don't work in anything remotely interesting.
Hey guy you just crack me up they make a headset called color cross for under 20 bucks that does the same thing you're trying to do with a whole hell of a lot less trouble props for all the innovative reasoning but there is an easier way good luck lol
Indeed. Those were not common or made in a suitable size at the time I made this video (some time before I uploaded it to this channel). I'm still not convinced they'd take my tablet, or handle the weight of it, but I may give one a try at some point.
Limarc A No sorry I got it yesterday and it will not fit the nexus 7, but I was able to focus it to the tablet pushed up against the color cross if you wanted rig up a mount it would work, but personally I will be building one out of Polycarbonate
i remember you doing a vidio about downloading grandtorismo 6 and how long in took to upgrade and download on ps3,i had the same problems and i eventuley did it..cheers mate..
Thank you for the vid! I had an old kindle fire laying around and after getting all excited, I realized it didn't have a gyroscope :( Time for a new device :) Thanks again!
I've got a Galaxy Tab pro 10.1, maybe a bit big to make into a headset. The Google Cardboard software only seems to be configurable by pointing yor device at a QR code, something home made will lack that, so is there any way of manually adjusting the settings?
+PlayingAndroidBadly hey man! great idea with the binocular lens!! which specifications do you recommend for it? do you think a pair of 3x28 magnifier lens would work? thanks!!
I applaud your ingenuity. However, I hope you have upgraded your phone to something fully cardboard compatible by now. I'm writing this nearly a year after you made this video.
lol mine is tab s 10.5 :v And i only have 45mm lense from Cardboard -_- So i have to make my screen become 4.7" lol :v And it works XD LOL . If i found 50mm lense, i would be so happy :
Ah... now those are new, at least, in that size. There wasn't anything available for bigger than 5" when I made my headset. Might have to take a look at those. I'm not optimistic that they'd solve some of the issues I had, like lenses requiring the screen to be further back, causing weight issues that require counterbalancing. Nevertheless... thanks for the link :)
is the technology here for cheap? the modules to build fat sharks for example? You look educated. can you do a build im pretty sure theres enought arduino avr boards. and small tft screens are peanuts. mod a od galaxy mini into my own case? i got bunch of tablet to and want to do a diy tx aswell as the fpv. get older nice gear cheap and use some modern boards. hmm id be interested in buying a bunch of boards and get pcb made up if you fancy a shared build deal? you could do yiutube video.
os criadores de 3d deveriam criar um game hibrido, onde as pessoas reais que estão proximas são transformadas em avatares dos games e uma arma que dispara raios laser, assim poderiam jogar em equipe, tipo paint bol hibrido
😃😂 ye he couldve just bought some mini binochulas or something lol. Inagine him in local park like that 😁😂😃 hey what they do it look weird. hey makes me see girls naked 😂😃😁 for real!

great video! love the in-depth explanation. love that you included the early attempts and why they didn't work. overall 10 stars.

You're welcome :-)
I'm looking forward to watching more videos from you. Keep up the good work!

I just love this build :p I really dig your process man!
Steve, a brilliant video. Great see the process of invention from start to finish.
really enjoyed watching this .. just goes to show that with a little bit of ingenuity and a lot of gaffa you can make just anything you put your mind to .. brilliant vid :)
have you got your patent yet 😊☺
but for you to make it lighter, what about using some shoulder straps of some sort??
Really like your approach on this! Well done!
you're a legend! great vid. I feel like I want to watch you make more stuff.
cool, you could use a big power bank in the back as a counter weight, that way you can charge the phone too.
Nice going! Proves once again that you can fix anything with gaffa, even when things aren´t broken at all :)

hahaha.... that thing looks like something straight outta the 90s..... brilliant, loved it.
It looks like a good project for a 3d plastic printer. Are there any designs already out there to 3d print the headset?
+Jeffrey Nelson Just download the google cardboard template
Perhaps instead of using a counterweight you could use a bundle of colorful heliium balloons attached to the front of the headset? :
+Jeffrey Nelson That works fine, until you add motion into the mix. Plus you'll have to keep topping up the helium in the balloons due to dissipation.
+Phill Hyamson Then use hot air balloons?
I think he was jocking
I can use then in the moon 1/6 off gravity ;D
You should try this with a kindle fire, I'll try putting my own designs together for it so you can print out a cardboard template and try it for yourself, but a design for a device that's reasonably cheap and fairly accessible has the potential to blow up quite quickly.
It was really funny at mark 1,but eventually works at the end.,though it's huge.,good job!
You're sooooooooo smart. You inspire me!

great video I found I shared the same pains since I made a diy Google cardboard for my nexus 7 2013 which is very light so it worked out better
you could mod the spinning chair with plank on the back of chair and hang an elastic rope between helmet(on center) and plank on the top, so that you lose a weight of helmet
Awesome video man!
How did you decide on the distance in between the pair of reading glasses?
braa It was just trial and error. I tried moving them closer and further apart, till I found the distance that would allow me to view stuff really close, and still be able to bring the image from each eye together.

you can try use the periscope system so you can make it like a helmet, just imagine
i think the real breakthrough is with google glass hud in the lens.....they just havent put that 2 + the 2 of google cardboard/oculus rift. now that i typed this, you may see a spark at google on this...
I broke my phone, so I couldn't get a 20 dollar vr set, but this worked on my RCA!!!!!!!
Have you tried doing a brace from your waist to the box using those selfie portrait cell phone rods
if you put a plastic brace going from the helmet to the VR cardboard will fix the weight problem!
Hi great video loved every minute, can I ask what's the screen door effect and pixels like with this setup ?
+DaGURUMASTA It's a lot like wearing a full face crash helmet, in that it doesn't fill your peripheral vision, but still feels believable. Pixels aren't an issue. It's way better than the MK2 Oculus Rift I tried once in terms of visible pixels.

Cool. Cheers :)
zeropointfuel hey any update yet? I have galaxy tab 2, wanna know if it'd work with the color cross
Limarc A No sorry I got it yesterday and it will not fit the nexus 7, but I was able to focus it to the tablet pushed up against the color cross if you wanted rig up a mount it would work, but personally I will be building one out of Polycarbonate

Goog projects,.. but could not stop LOL...its sooo funny to watch this video...Better got your project registered...I would be the first to buy it.
Lol!!! @ the helmet!!! Dexter has nothing on you! =D
you have a helmet for the scarry games ??? :DDDD because the horror games is 100x more scarrest than at the monitor
Use elastic straps to hold the head set on that's what I did.
Superb Mr Benway!
Yea, I'm on a rolla costa.
lol.
Delightful.
The Benoculous Thrift is genius lol
you should patent these and sell them commercially
Ahh. that was funny..

nevermind.. i saw it was Refugio 3D Space Station
Do you have a link to buy the lenses? Or specs?
Dwain Dibley???? What the hell happened????

hey u could also make one out of under water goggles with cardboard
+JZ Games u cant
thank you!!!!!
what apps you used on this video? (in your tablet)
I applaud your ingenuity. However, I hope you have upgraded your phone to something fully cardboard compatible by now. I'm writing this nearly a year after you made this video.
+Bryan Minnix Sadly not. 2 year contract on my phone.
+PlayingAndroidBadly have you try with Wearality lens with 7 inch phone?
my 8 inch tablet replicates the size of a phone screen, but its still heavy af

DSD Movies It's the two videos from before, combined into one.
i have a 6" device, which lenses should i use ? 40mm focal length ?
I honestly don't know. I used trial and error throughout the whole making of this thing.

What? This video is uncut, and took almost an hour
..they do make google cardboard 7" or 5" expandable
I've seen them for 5", but never seen one that would take a 7" tablet.
***** yes. .here from ebay: m.ebay.com/itm/231443187151?nav=SEARCH
Some are cheaper
Ah... now those are new, at least, in that size. There wasn't anything available for bigger than 5" when I made my headset. Might have to take a look at those. Yep :)
Some have lense adjustable. You could use trinus gyre for pc/oculus games too, but could be slow on tablet
