- Join us as we visit Playland Park in Rye, New York for the first time! This 1928 amusement park is home to some old, classic attractions, including an impressive wooden roller coaster called The Dragon! They're also home to a wooden roller coaster that only kids can ride.... but they made an exception for us!

Dragon Coaster was always meant to appeal to families, which is why there isn't any crazy airtime moments on it. The old Airplane coaster was the thrilling woodie in the park (closed in the fifties)
Yeah. Apparently GCI got most of its design philosophies from the design of Airplane coaster. Honestly it would be amazing if Airplane coaster was rebuilt by GCI too. Plus most of the land it sat on is still available, the only thing in the way afaik is the Volare.
@@drdewott9154 I suspect you couldn't actually make a new ride just like that today and meet modern safety standards--it'd have to be considerably tamed.
Playland needs to bring back more of the classic rides that made this park great .just because a ride is new doesn’t make the park better !
At one point I considered this my home park. Extremely charming.
My home park ♥️. I agree that it has seen some much better days. Back in the 90's 2000's it was full of life and they had a few more great attractions that have since been removed. Would love to see them turn it around. Glad you guys got to visit!
It's been my home park my whole life (I'm currently 28 years old). Been going there for about 25 years and it was so much fun back then but more recently it's been starting to crumble and show it's age. I think it's in the process of getting a makeover since the county of Westchester no longer operates it (they still own it) and hopefully the company that now runs it can make it look nice again just in time for the 100th anniversary 5 years from now.
That's the Mariah Carey coaster isn't it?
Yep, it was in the music video for Fantasy, the song from Free Guy.
Mr. Bean Coaster- GONE
Final Destination Coaster- GONE
But at least there's still Mariah Coaster
Can you indicate which rides those were?
@@cccEngineer Skyways @ Brighton Pier and Corkscrew @ PNE Playland
@@overlookersno way the final destination arrow is gone😢
That tiny wooden coaster is so cool even though its nothing crazy. Its just old and, idk, cool.
The park just went under new management. A good 2 years back Westchester county (the county its in) ran an operated the park and that's why a lot of it was left to decay and looks bad now. When I visited when it was under new management they started renovating the side entrance and put effort into repainting everything so hopefully this park has a bright future ahead.
I rode Dragon Coaster 7 times in the back seat. That drop was so good I want to do it again.
FINNALY home park representation
Edit: Damn how many peoples home park is this
Yessir!!!!!
me
ME! YONKERS IN THE HOUSE>>OR PARK>>LOL
FANTASY BY MARIAH CAREY WAS FILMED ON THE DRAGON COASTER!!!
Rye playland and kennywood are the only two amusement parks that are national historic monuments
A portion of Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is as well. The area from the caroucel to the giant dipper is a historic landmark. Of course individual rides such as Leap The Dips have also recieved the designation.
Rye is the best for kids. The height restrictions are generous for the ride type. The small kids section has a lot of different types of rides, even a fiberglass giant slide. Another good thing is that it is a county? State? Run park. I believe the only government owned park in the country. In the summer there are lots of staff which is good because usually a couple of attendants check the seatbelts, double checking each other. My kids loved it from very young until they were teens. If you have younger teens or toddlers, it is a great choice.
Playland is my home park i've been going there since I was a little boy 25 years ago! Glad you finally got there it's one of only two amusement parks that's on the National Historic Landmarks (the other being Kennywood) and they have a good collection on smaller scale rides and definitely has an old school vibe to it! It's also the only government owned amusement park in the country (the County of Westchester owns it which is where it's located).
Taylor Swift+Coaster Studios=🎉
The Dragon Coaster is also seen in the movie big. That was my childhood park so it always holds a special spot in my heart. Plus talking about the government giving them money...from what I know it is the only park owned by the government. It is owned by Westchester County.
I appreciate Sarah’s Taylor swift joke 😂
Taylor did not lmao
I love coaster studios, I have nothing else to say.
Some great footage there.
The old school rides are why I travel 150 miles to visit the park.
I'm not a fan of modern coasters. The Dragon Coaster is great though, just right.
The old school dark rides are the big attraction for me. Also the the art deco architecture, and the beautiful sea side harbor that surrounds the park.
The hour-long line for Kiddy Coaster is killing me lol, I went on that thing over and over every summer as a kid growing up right near this park
How had Sarah never ridden a Whip prior to this park??! I love that ride so much! I actually rode three different ones during my PA park road trip back in July (Kennywood, Knoebels, Dorneypark) and loved all of them. Sometimes you gotta take a minute and appreciate those old classics! =D (Thanks for another great park video....this park is super cute!)
No one goes all the way to the end of the park across a small street... to a sailboat cruise ride....then the opposite end a beautiful beach....don't miss out!
This made me smile - I grew up about 30-40 minutes northwest of Playland and we used to go every summer as kids in the late '80s and all through the '90s. I finally got back in 2016 for the first time since maybe 2001, and was pleasantly surprised that the charm was still there and that the Dragon Coaster was still running smooth for an old woodie (it was actually my first adult woodie when I was 10, and the Kiddie Coaster was my first coaster ever when I was very young, but I don't count it as a credit since I can't remember it, I've only seen pictures of me on it). The Derby Racer is still my favorite and most unique ride in the park. I do remember that the long stretches of green LED lights in The Old Mill used to be in complete darkness, which was weirdly unsettling as a kid. I know they had some accidents and an unfortunate death so maybe they added the lights for that reason, but I remember the complete darkness really creeping me out. I haven't been on a Whip in over 20 years and now I want to ride one!
Criss-Cross-Applesauce is now the preferred nomenclature for crossed leg sitting.
Another daily vid. Always makes my day better 😊
It's amazing how the long queue for the kiddie wooden coaster disappeared whilst you were on it then reappeared after you 'got off it'. Also, the guy you were going to ride it with de-aged about 20 years. 🤔😜
Lol “Indian style”, we called it crisscross applesauce
Looks like a bunch of lil fun rides there!
I’m surprised at how much I enjoy watching them do quirky dark rides
This was actually my first park that I have been to back around 2003.
YESSS THIS DAY WAS SO AWESOME!
thank you guys again for taking that pic with me there, was such a great event!
My home park! Looks like the dragon coaster got a paint job.
I think this place would be perfect candidate for an Rmc wild moose to replace the zamperla flier
I've been a few times when I worked in Port Chester. It's a cute little park, especially in the summer, though it is very old and sketchy feeling. It is very loved by the community, but it desperately needs some TLC.
Wow this is so cool and interesting and great video
My home park! 🎉 Couldn’t make the conference but the kiddie coaster was my jam as a kid. Your vids are great by the way. Keep em coming!
I went here all the time as a kid.
This can be a fun park. Back before the state took it over and added some security after dark, this place could get really sketchy!
Yes, features in Big, but what about the greatest roller coaster moment in a music video? Fantasy!
the park is owned by westchester county, which is why they haven't had any significant investment. Used to go here all the time as a kid. Very well could have been my first credit
The derby racer is so awesome.
Tiniest Roller Coaster I have ever seen
The reason for long dark stretches in the Old Mill is there for you to be able to make your move on your girl friends . A little 60's history
This park was also in the movie Fatal Attraction
Interesting!
12:11 Hasn’t Sarah done Alien Swirling Saucers at Hollywood Studios and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree at DCA? Those are basically whip rides.
I’ve been there!
Its called criss cross apple sauce 😂
Yes I like my own comment
They had a looping coaster that was white back in the 80's - it was kinda in the middle of the park. Does anyone remember that and what the name was? They also had an Trabant ride that was indoors with music and lights, that was a fun one that I am assuming is gone now too.
TOM HANKS GOT BIG WITH ZOLTAR IN THIS PARK!!!
If you watch videos of the Dragon Coaster when it used the old train, it looks like it ran a lot faster. My guess is that the fiberglass Morgan train being so light helps to keep it smooth, but also neuters any forces on the ride. Maybe PTC could be tempted to make a new buzzbar trainset for it? That would be nice. Get some forces back into the rides, but keep the old time feel.
Unfortunately they installed the Morgan trains in order to reduce wear and tear on the track. I grew up right next to Playland, and I rode the old heavy trains countless times. It was a completely different ride in those days because of those heavy trains. Much faster and much more exciting.
I really dislike the Morgans in terms of weight and functionality, but they did do a cool dragon-themed wrap on the trains which looks great.
This place is 20 mins from me they needa add a raptor here or something 😂
blackpool pleasure beach has that carousel aswell
The Dragon coaster was much faster when it ran the original iron and wood Prior & Church trains you saw. Zombie Castle dates back to 1935 when it was a Harry Traver-designed Laff In The Dark ride. It became Zombie Castle in the 1990s and was much better when operated by the concessionaires who owned it . Many rides owned by concessionaires were recently removed from that empty area you entered, including the awesome triple-decker Flying Witch dark ride.
The Alex Forrest coaster
Don't tell me credits expire after 10 years when I can't ride Volcano anymore!
Just FYI to Sarah, I think the more contemporary term for sitting like that is Criss-cross-applesauce, although I don't think saying sitting Indian style is offensive to anyone but the most sensitive college kids.
Twisted Cyclone shuldv taken some notes....
RMC Wild Moose prototype? 😁
It needs a MOOSE!
A RMC family would fit
🤓 Ok thoosie
Why u can only ride this junior coaster
It's now owed by the county...and that says alot about up keep! Sad monies are always going for the wrong things!.. Open your pocketbook guys !
Quick correction, Belmont Park is in San Diego, not Santa Cruz. Just had to clarify haha :)
We were referring to Big Dipper at Belmont Park AND Santa Cruz, not Belmont park IN Santa Cruz. Both rides were made by the same company as Dragon!
@@CoasterStudios Oh nice! I didn't know that! Thanks :)
I didn't even know you were still in ace, because I thought you quit ace to join coaster crew? please explain to me what happened, like if you were always in ace but just haven't gone to an event in a while or if you rejoined or something
You’re allowed to be in more than one coaster club! We do both :)
@@CoasterStudios Ohhh ok thanks, I was just asking because i haven't seen you vlog a ace event in a while
Guys Playland owner is NY state { GOVERNMENT } they are cheap geeting new rides .
