Cover for Kerrang!'s Nevermind Forever 20th anniversary album
Just uploading these for listening pleasure, don't be a dick and prosecute me for copyright infringement plz (I'm looking at you EMI)
(Well, it's definitely different)
Can't beleive a band this good is gone now :(
We miss arcane roots, i kwon ☹️
Same. Chronically underrated. 😢
Still coming back to this 9 years later
still butthurt they aren't around. My favourite band on the SW scene for years. loved this when it came out! absolute heros!
One of the best covers I've ever heard. They truly make it their own. I hate when covers are just bands playing the song.
agreed a lot!
this album should just be this cover 14 times
I'd love to hear what Arcane Roots would do if they covered the whole of Nevermind
This is one of the most risky covers ever, and they pulled it off. Get over yourselves people. Nirvana aren't untouchable.
I cant stand nirvana but this was awesome
They could have just played it safe and played the song exact but then it would just be the equivalent to karaoke and will be boring. They made the song their own by recreating it in their own style. It's just a different version to the song no different to making a piano or jazz rendition (There's a jazz version I swear, it's by Paul Anka) and takes away nothing from the original song or Nirvana. They're all good.
Just because it's still a band with guitars and drums etc doesn't mean they have to copy it exact.
I'm just saying that I agree with you.
@@KaNe1493 Yep yep, exactly.
Sensational cover. I love how they took the core riff and rearranged it. People can whine about it not being the same, but it's built around the core notes, and this is what a cover should be. They made the song their own, and on those merits, it's great.
Definitely threw me through a loop at the start when the main riff dropped though.
this was recorded nearly 6 years ago and still sounds ahead of its time, misunderstood...
One of the best covers i've ever heard, i'm sick of covers being identical to the original songs. That's how you do it.
For those who say that they use auto-tune. They don't! Andrew just overdubs his voice with singing the same note, just an octave higher.
People saying they ruined the song: Arcane Roots wrote that masterpiece, which is more beutiful and complex than the original in one day, nivana took weeks to write it.
Don't hate it, love it.
It's not a good thing when someone takes less time make something. More time means they put in more work and thought or planned everything out
They only had one day to write this.
Trust me, Andrew, daryl and adam put as much work into a song until they feel that the song is ready. And then it's always perfect. But, ok, if their music is to complex for you, listen to more pop ;)
MychemGD1234 It's really not an insult to say go listen to pop...there's isn't really a heirchy in music. I agree that most pop nowadays is manufactured and mass produced but there are the few pop artists that know their shit. I'm an astute Metalhead. I love Folk Metal like it's my child. I hate that because I enjoy this kinda music that means it's my duty to hate pop. Look up the name Max Martin. He's an amazing Metalhead that not only produced for many of the great Metal and Metalcore music we love today but he preformed with a brutal ass Funk Metal band. This same man is also responsible for many pop musicians you hear about today. He wrote lyrics for Katy Perry, Lady gaga, and so on and so forth. This proves that Metal and Rock aren't not on the all mighty pedestal of "my music is better than yours". it's on the same level as "it can be either bad or good" as pop.
Edit: I changed Joey Sturgis to Max Martin because that was the guy I was thinking of.
I didn't have the purpose to start a "pop-music is shit" Discussion, but it is a fact, that pop-music is not that complex and is easy to listen to. You barely find complex songs, you barely find music with sensefull lyrics.
But that's not the point. This piece of art is just beautiful (in the way ar recorded it and in the way they rewrote this amazing song). These 3 lads are the most talented musicians i know. Andrew is one of the best guitar players and songwriters i know, daryl is amazing at playing his drums and adam is a beast at playing his bass guitar.
Maybe it's not the music you love to listen to, but imo it's pointless to say some band uses autotune or destroyed a song, when you don't know if they really used it (which is the truth) or if it's just not the music you like, cause then it's subjective.
MychemGD1234 I also love this band. Probably not the people themselves because a lot of them are dicks but they're music is amazing. My point in the first comment I made was that this song(which already is a great rendition of Kurt's) would've been much better than it already is had it not been rushed. he put as much work into it as possible in that one day but what if he had more time to perfect it and continue to work on it.
THE best version. The original was just a catchy, angry song. This is musically beautiful.
As a huge nirvana fan I can't say I was expecting much... but this is amazing!
F*ck... That's the best cover I've heard in a long while!
Probably the only decent cover of this song ever!
If you are looking for a cover that sounds exactly the same as the original then you probably don't understand the point of the cover and should just listen to Nirvana
I don't usually Nirvana, but when I do, Arcane Roots
good one mate
"They don't even play it right". "Random strumming". It is their style to make complex strumming patterns and stuff, you hear that quite a lot in math rock.
Nirvana are one of my fav bands growing up, and still are, i never thought anyone could cover them and be good, blasphomy i would think to the idea of someone covering Nirvana
Years later, Arcane Roots are one of my fav bands right now and have been since 5 years ago when i first heard Habibty, then i heard this. They did something i never thought someone could with a cover, let alone a Nirvana one. Keep the manic energy, yet make it their own. Great cover, Great bands (both are) a masterpiece cover of a masterpiece song
Still the best.
The cover everyone avoided, and you nailed it, and then some.
I don't believe you're dead. Come back and build us all better x
They've made the song so much more complex than it was before. "They don't even play it right" is hilarious. This is the first song a lot of kids learn. These guys are more talented than most professional musicians in rock music.
Been 12 years an i am still obsessed by this song
This is genuinely the only good cover i've heard of this song ever, nobody can do Nirvana justice, but Arcane Roots, my god, I love you. xx
This shows the same guile as Biffy did when covering Buddy Holly by Weezer. Awesome job, guys.
As a HARDCORE NIRVANA fan, I have to say that, when taking into account that a cover is not a karaoke contest, this is a very solid cover of a classic song. All the haters in these comments are ignorant, and not in the essence of the person and band they claim to be fans of (most have probably never heard Bleach). A cover should be a unique interpretation of an already existing song (Example- Son of a Gun by Nirvana, a ton of Zeppelin, and countless others). This is what a cover should be.
So God damned underrated. It's so incredibly sad that Arcane is no longer
I'd much rather have a band cover a song and put their own swing on it, than a band just flat out copying the song. I think it's fantastic and deserves a hell of a lot of credit.
Born out of Surrey in such a good decade of music. Three very talented guys made up Arcane Roots.
Such a shame they parted ways - shame was I think they just didnt drum up a big enough following or popularity at the time.
First album is mesmerizing!!
This is a great cover - Arcane Roots have definitely put their stamp on it
You obviously don't listen to arcane roots haha, he's probably got one of the best voices I've ever heard on a guy.
Math rock doesn't just mean odd time signatures...
This has some pretty specific, complicated syncopation; requires a good knowledge of mathematical division and rock music to write a cover like this.
this is like arcane roots style and its awesome!
one of the best covers on this great song
This is pretty damn good...I like almost as much as the original.
This is the best cover on the album! if i wanted to listen to the tune note for note, id listen to the original. Wicked take on a classic.
They definitely made the song their own here
This is Biffy-esque. Great cover.
I think I'll really love their other stuff.
I enjoyed this more than I probably should
Pitch correction is too often confused with t-pain style auto-tune, its a different animal, it only works well if you're pretty much in tune anyway. recording I have seen arcane roots twice now and been present during a lengthy soundcheck, andrew can hit those notes and higher (see rouen or habibty) with fucking ease, of course when they play live he'll miss the odd one (being that hes a frenetic guitarist who is always thrashing about) but I reckon one of the best live singers i've ever seen.
I friggin love this band. Totally made this song their own. Bravo
You were extremely right to expect this, the new album is fucking sick! They deserve a lot more acknowledgement, they're amazing!
Good to see them put a different spin on it, never been a fan of the original song but Arcane Roots have done a good job on it, great band.
Riot Act podcast brought me here
Same here, now I can’t stop listening to this. I think I owe Remfry a pint for the recommendation
I'm legitimately surprised, i expected so much more butthurt in these comments. Arcane roots forever!
what an awsome cover! obviously never gonna match the origional but what cover ever does for any song plus who really wants to hear any song structured and played the exact way (for butsniffjackwagon1), it was mixed and mashed covered beautifully one of my favourite bands justnow!!
Holy shit, I wish I'd heard this sooner. This really put a smile on my face :)
So much energy in this song ha ha Love it!
Hm, could be double tracked, his voice sounds very very much the same in both tracks though, so if it is double tracked he must have an exceptional control over his voice to be able to sing it exactly the same twice.
People use pitch correction such as Antares a lot man, more commonly than you would think, there are layers of harmony in this tune and i've no idea if its tuned or not, high end tuning programs are pretty transparent. I don't reckon Andrew needs it to be fair, watch the vid of them playing 'in this town of such weather' live in the vans shop, it's pretty flawless. Their own stuff is lightyears better than this cover, which is amazing by its own merit.
THEY HAVN'T RUINED THE CLASSIC, THEY'RE BRINGING NIRVANA BACK TO LIFE!
Yes, this is math rock, but it's covering a pop song
I'm not saying Nirvana's a pop band, but that song's one of the most popular songs of the 90's
I was just thinking "hmm where could I go to see some RUclips cancer?" then I found this comment section. This song is freaking great and it's over dubbed not auto tune ya dinguses you can even hear a part where one layer goes up a note while the other stays down
it's funny 'cause even _Kurt Cobain_ himself used to overdub his voice in some of _Nirvana's_ material (including this very song)... Some people just don't want to understand and prefer to bitch about pointless stuff they don't understand...
Simply one of the best covers I've heard. I also like Nirvana very much. But this cover is awesome !!!!
this is immense.... and i fucking love nirvana. that tapping riff in the verse is awesome. harmonies just suit it so much.
@HitsWithStyxx i passed out when I first heard this amazing cover!
People over here upset that the cover sounds like the band doing it, as if that's not the entire point of a cover. If it sounds exactly like the original, there was no point in doing it.
Here because of Riot Act. Cheers Remfrey.
vocals
Still awesome
as much as i love Nirvana....i love this cover its amaaaze ;D
This is absolutely amazing. I can see where a lot of people are coming from. But come one guys, this is Nirvana. None of the covers could live up to them but they all tried their best and majority of them came out successful. Plus this is smells like teen spirit, one of the most iconic songs of our time, so they wouldn't be able to live up to it properly, but did very well trying.
To everyone bitching about Auto-tune, I dare you to go out, find any band you want, go find their producer and provide proof that not one part of the album had auto-tune. EVERYONE uses autotune on a high production record. No human being is perfect, and bits will always need fine tuning because they're gunna want the record to be as good as it possibly can. This cover is fucking sick!
Cobain would've loved this. Nirvana fans taking a dump on this...listen, Kurt was an innovator and he had a massively eclectic taste in music. He wouldnt have wanted to hear a carbon copy of his songs. This is at least creative.
@TheHazzaMac Cobain would have loved this. He hated the song. How many times does this have to be repeated to the 'fans'?
That explains why when I listend to his acoustic version of rouen his voice sounded different thanks for clearing that up plus I agree this version is better the guitar in it is so much better
vocals are double tracked, that's what the "effect" is, and it's been widely used also in the original Nirvana recordings.
I love it.
What a great fucking cover. The start fucks with your head
The crasyest cover
mhh, in this case I wouldn't know. vocals are treated in many different ways, but usually there are few main points which remain intact: in series compression, parallel compression, double tracking, etc...
@buttsniffjackwagon1 that's not auto-tuned. it's called phaser effect. To be honest, no cover's gonna be good as the original song but they've made it their own and that to me it probably the best thing they could of done instead of tried to copy the original masterpiece :)
@Tool9395 its not pitch correction, maybe your just confusing Fx with auto-tune
what an incredible cover, well done
@undermosher Cobain hated the song. He would've be happy they changed it.
Mate, Andrew is a hell of a singer, he doesn't need auto tune, go see them live.
Great cover
Far better than the original. I liked the original too but this is superb.
@EddyBear360 Just because T-pain uses auto-tune as a gimmick doesn't mean auto-tune has to sound like that, there is definite pitch correction in this
I love this cover!!:D
It is double tracked. My band use the same producer and that's something he likes to do to get the vocals sounding how he wants them. Check out 'The Seas Will Rise' by utoXator. You'll hear it on there too...
Was Arcane Roots influenced by Fair to Midland his vocals remind of Darroh Sudderth?
This is modern day alchemy, turning led into gold !
If it was a replica of the original, you'd complain.
If it was done like this, you'd complain.
What you need to do is realise that this re-imagining of the song isn't by Nirvana. It's a fantastic version on this song and perhaps people need to broaden their minds instead of being closed-minded because it comes with a 'classic' tag.
This guy is sooooo cool, everyone come see how cool he is
This and Dillinger's Territorial Pissings are the best on it.
@lchancellorx Why, give us one good reason why it shouldn't be covered?
Sick!
actually one of the better covers. most, i think, are rubbish. this one has a lot of energy and is different from the original... bigtime. if i'd like to listen to original nirvana songs i would do so...
There isn't definite pitch correction in this. There is an effect on his vocals yes, but it is not pitch correction. He wouldn't need it, listen to him sing in their own work, and live, and you'll see that.
Best one on the album
awesome
FUCKING BRILLIANT!
@buttsniffjackwagon1 That's not autotune. That's a reverby, phase effect effect
This is much better than that craptastic cover by Bruthal 6.
I'm quite aware of such things ^^ My point being though, i'm not 100 percent sure it is double tracking, it very well may be, but there are other such production processes that could create similar effects :3
Yeah i guess the hardcore nirvana "fans" who are slating this cover, are forgetting nirvana did a few different covers them selves, also not forgetting they also changed their styles for their own songs, such as album version of Polly/Polly (new wave) same song, different take, by the same band. Irecon Kurt would have been impressed with this, would love to know grhols thoughts on it
this is without doubt fucking sick. if you have any knowledge about music or how it works, youd see this is a really well done cover. arcane roots arent as known as they should be. I expect big things from tneir next album.
nathansphoneemail I'm actually curious, how are your predictions working so far? I was sceptical of new album for some time but it really grew in me
Hes changed it alot but i like it actually :)
I am a very big fan of Nirvana and what I will say is very risky but I prefer this recovery to that of nirvana may be because I have often heard the original version
Haters. Hate it if you want but I for one believe that this is an actual fucking kickass revive of this song. I got this album from a Kerrang! magazine and I thought it wouldn't be as good at first but then I put it on and this was the first track and well, let's just say it fucking blew me away. In my opinion this is AS good as the Nirvana version! Love it!!! :D
Theres no point to play exactly same song this is Aracne Roots version!
