When I was a young man my Daddy taught me that unless you have something good to say do not say anything. I would well imagine she has a XC coach and does not need coaching from others. Maybe you show simply enjoy her joy, and if you can't then watch something else. It never ceases to amaze me how critical horse people are of other people. In fact riding is a learning inexperience every time and every one may have moving hands or sloppy legs at one time or another. I return to this video because of her sheer joy. As for the horse - he seems to have less problems with her hands than everyone else.
Everyone going on about her hands, as milothepuggle said the horse is moving its head so she has to move her hands with it so she doesn't yank on its mouth but also think about where the camera is... it is mounted on her chest so her body will be moving with the horse as well and the camera may even be moving if it isn't on tight so it is going to make her hands look like they are moving more than they are. The horse also looks very happy with its ears pricked and is jumping fine if she was pulling on it it wouldn't want to jump.
It looks to me like her hands are moving WITH the horse not against him, he actually has his head very still, and isn't shaking his head in an upset way at all. if she held them totally still it would be actually jamming against his natural movement. even at a walk your hands should move WITH the horse
yeah that's what I was thinking. She's not pulling on the horse's mouth--she's trying to *avoid* pulling on the horse's mouth. Because of how short her reins are, she has to match the movement of the horse's head on every stride. I don't get what the problem is...
The second best sound in the world, Hoffbeats of a happy horse being the 1st, is the sound of a rider enguraging and praiseing and exclaiming excitement to her horse the WHOLE way! You just earned my complete and honest respect.
I really enjoy this ride and the music. I too ride xc and as I read the comments I wonder why everyone thinks you post this so they can be an expert or a critic. People just slay me with their self importance. Horse people often seem to be the worst. Anyway you and Nate are enjoyable I all your videos. I come back to this one often.
So COOL! What a blessing to have such a horse and to know how to ride like that! Beautiful scenery, too! Thanks so much for making and sharing this video! -- CitySlicker in Minneapolis area
MAGNIFIQUE!!! Wonderful, thanks a lot for this video, representing to me a kind a of "perfect ride": perfect courage, perfect athlete condition as it seems effortless, perfect communication with your horse +++ From France.
What an awesome video it brings back so many memories. Thank-you for trying to keep your hands away from the camera that can't have been easy while going X-country. I loved it and your wee Nate seems willing and Honest great vid
Really fun to ride along with you! Your horse really covers a lot of ground! Seemed effortless to travel all that way at a good pace and make all the jumps as though they were nothing. Loved the music, too! Thanks so much for posting! ~ from Minnesota p.s. If you should post again, please include full shot of your black beauty!
It's a GoPro Hero HD. This one is chest-mounted but it can also be worn on the head. It can shoot in full HD at 30 frames/sec and at 720p at 30 or 60 frames/sec (if you want to slow down fast action).
More than half the enjoyment for me is actually listening to the horse breath and grunt and grind his way through the course. I am not that enamored with listening to constant nonstop melodic composition, no matter how good. Believe it or not there are people who would just like to listen to the sounds of natural things happening naturally.
@TasteeMyPoison It's a GoPro Hero HD. This one is chest-mounted but it can also be worn on the head. It can shoot in full HD at 30 frames/sec and at 720p at 30 or 60 frames/sec (if you want to slow down fast action).
I love watching videos like this. I can just imagine myself riding on the back of that horse. I have never experienced a more freeing sensation than being on the back of a galloping horse. :3
@TheEverythinghorse I'll share your tips with Samara. The camera is a GoPro Hero HD. This one is chest-mounted but it can also be worn on the head. It can shoot in full HD at 30 frames/sec and at 720p at 30 or 60 frames/sec (if you want to slow down fast action). You can find them online or at a number of electronics stores.
Scrolling through the comments. Lots of people here need to learn that observation and criticism are not the same. And so darn many experts. Samara, nice video and music and only you and your trainer should care about your hands, it is no one else's business - they do not know where you are or where you have come from. As a sports psychologist it is my experience that those who feel the need to criticize others efforts are as seldom as good as they think they are. Nice video I watch it often.:)
Wonderful ride!!! Anybody who has galloped cross country will find that maintaining a soft contact with the horse requires you to constantly adjust and organize your reins. Your horse obviously loves your riding. Thanks for putting this up! It goes on my channel under "Cool".
This is a really nice Video. shared it with my dressage coach who is an eventer. I wonder why it is that people have to make critial comments. If you have nothign good to say then why say anything, you all are not her coach. Even my own coach doesn't make critical comments, simply redirects and praises the good stuff so I do more of it. Anyway this is a great video and I really like the music.
@littledrawingfan Samara walks the course two or three times and memorizes the map. After that, there are little coloured markers on the jumps (but I don't think they help too much when you're galloping on a horse).
Beautiful job...Ignore some of these comments...I am a rider and at 42 y.o. have a black TWH I do full dressage with...love the way you reward him with a pat...ur hands are not out of control...u r simply readjusting ur reins... u maintain full control and speed thru every jump...and command his full attention... congrats! BTW...what are the particulars on your horse? ears tip in like a walker.....
Everyone just needs to shut up. She did great! Everyone talking about her hands movement, it doesn't hurt the horse in anyway, the performance, or anything! If she had kept her hands completely still, that would've hurt the horse more than moving. Also, if you are commenting, do you do XC? Do you even RIDE?
I know she knows her horse the best so only she can say no my hands were too far forward maybe this horse likes a long rain but when it's too long she can't control him or her x
Kaikai Norway omg...........so true . On the other hand, she is trying to go as much with the horse as she can!!!!!! People don't realize that they don't know everything.........just look at the horses ears.......he's loving it!!!!!
@M946 Not too many people have decided to shoot this kind of video but I'm sure that'll change because it's a fun perspective. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@akyramoto I'm glad you like it! Samara and Nate made similar videos at other events this year. You'll see them on my channel or amongst the suggested videos on the right. --->
@RacingtheWind42 It depends what you want to record. If you want to do a lot of underwater recording then the curved lens on the case distorts images a bit, but for these videos, you can see that it works very well. It comes with helmet mounts but you can get accessories to mount it on your chest (as is the case in these vids) as well as posts and boards. Lots of options and lots of fun! Go for it if you want action shots and videos from your favourite activities!
Yeh, in many competitions theres a 'trail' or a fence which goes around the whole of your course so that if you are too fall of the horse is 'funnelled' out. But in basic eventing there isn't :)
Congratulations!!Now I am pregnant and I do not know yet when it will be possible for me to ride a horse again but this video made me feel like riding... Only one thing: the sound of the hoofs would have been better, but I still really liked it!
@PorscheORviper Nate is a Dutch Warmblood, Canadian Sport horse cross. He happens to be quite large but I don't know horses, so I can't really say what's ideal for you.
Thanks!! I wasnt sure cause im in hunter/jumper and was very interesting in cross country eventing:) again thank you so much for the help!!!!(and for answering nicely) lol
Everyone know's it all in the horsey world ay ! lol . You both look like you had a great time , no blood , no broken bone's , I do downhill mountain biking and ride horses there's nothing like it :) . What a lovely horse :)
great point of view - what a shame so many people have to pick at your riding. I think if people want to comment about riding 'faults' they really need to upload a similar video of themselves doing XC ... for comparison.
Thanks for the ride! great! All the comments on the hands! Stop it,! if you've never ridden cross country, you don't understand that al these jumps require a lot of rein above the jump, After the jump you have to shorten the rains. And futher more the horse must have had a lot of energy at the beginning of the cross. So you have to keep him short otherwise he wouldn;t make it till the end and still having enough energy to jump the difficult jumps at the end. Because if your horse is to tired at the end, accidents will happen. Bet you gise never rode a cross! I say GREAT JOB, AND WATCHING THE HORSE, HE HAD FUN TOO.
I have ridden XC before. I know that you need a lot of rein over a jump but, your elbows should not move from your sides. and your hands should be like you are holding an ice cream cone. and if you need to do that LOOSEN your reins. But don't have them way to loose.
Z_ Horse Lover I agree, you always need contact with the horse's mouth, no matter if you need a lot of rein or not, depending on the need of energy of your horse you either leave it place or shorten it, but there has to be contact all the time, and of course your hands need to be still!, what so ever all you do by waving your hands that much is producing the horse damage in it's mouth, so if you want it to undedrstand yoru commands, better keep your hands still and guide the horse correctly, I have seen this ride really nice, except for the hands, and how untidy and how unbalanced is the horse all the time I have have been riden for more than 16 years, I have taken part in cross as much as I did un jump, my whole life since i was about 8 years old, so i perfectly know what i talk about, and trust me it's much more imprtant, first correct cotact and BALANCE, then jump
I love this video. And just to let other commenters know in cross-country it helps when you move your hands along with your horses head. Like for instance in racing the jockeys do the same thing and the horses can move their head easier.
eventers really rock! I saw some on tv and those jumps were horrifying to me, one guy horse slide rightto a retaining wall they were supposed to jump and hit his chest the rider rolled onto the ground on the top fo the wall. jumping over a fence that the oppisite side is lower than the jump side, into water no less, into and out of different scenarios that give me the hebeejeebees. is he as smooth at the gallop as it looks on the video? what breed is he?
Excellent Video,Great horesmanship. You seem to go along with his stride & never hinder or disturb the horse. Very nice and subtle riding. You just ease him on when he get's a little tired. And I think the chest mount angle is ideal. Because you are watching like being in the saddle . With a helmet mount, the angle and position is just not right. It is too high. So please send more. Your video will prompt me to buy a chest mount myself and start filming my show jumping. So watch this space.
Those are some big jumps! I would give some advice and say use more lega nd have a better grip on the reins but then again your galloping so that can be tough! :D how much did the camra coist and where can you get one??

This is great! well done on the course, was thinking of getting one of these cameras:) they look awesomeee
You rode that horse beautifully! very soft hands, going with the movement, and a easy steady pace. You should be very proud. Well done!

Thank you for the great video!
I've been to the Stuart Horse Trials several times. This is the first time I've ever been able to see the full XC course at one time.
