7 NASCAR Traditions That WOULDN'T Fly Today

- From laying one on a cute trophy girl to waving a now banned flag proudly the history of NASCAR is layered with less than savory traditions that have since gone by the wayside. This did not mean that all old traditions were necessarily bad as many were harmless and even fan favorites for their time, but with time NASCAR has mightily changed. With that here are 7 NASCAR traditions that wouldn’t fly today.

What traditions that NASCAR used to have would not fly today?
Front stretch victory interviews......
The magic of victory lane apparently...
Normal garage pulls
Photographers in the grass in between the pit lane and the track
Racing back too the line when the caution gets thrown
The victory lane interview needs to come back
Totally
Yes it’s watch the burnout small interview then 2nd and 3rd place finishes then that’s it I use to like watching the winner circle
I can understand it if it’s at a track like Martinsville where they have a makeshift victory lane, but victory lane interviews should come back
Agreed, i want see the driver celebrating with their crews
@@JackLikesTrackhouse who knows make a makeshift victory lane on the front stretch
The one tradition that TV networks and NASCAR need to start doing again is to have interviews in Victory Lane with the winner of the race instead of interviewing them out on the track after the race is over with. I miss that when Fox, NBC, and ESPN used to go to victory lane and wait for the winner of the race go to victory lane and celebrate with his team. I miss that part of NASCAR.
I wished they do again.
Something about time I believe
Yeah like anyone in the 90s said
'I'm buyin a Lumina on monday'
This season was enough for me to eliminate shopping for Goodyear tires on any day of the week.
@@salty_flightdeck_cpo Tony Stewart agrees
You means buying lemon
You would be surprised how many Luminas sold. I was working at a Chevrolet dealership back then and Luminas, Berettas and Corsicas were popular.
That is freaking hilarious!!!

The July 4th race was called the Firecracker 400, and "win on Sunday sell on Monday" only mattered when they raced cars that were nearly what could actually be bought by the public, circa pre90s.
On November 11, 1956 the next to last race of 1956 was at Hickory Speedway (won by Speedy Thompson) while the first race of 1957 was held in Lancaster CA (won by Marvin Panch)...The final race of 1956 was the next week at Wilson NC (won by Buck Baker)
From 1959 to 1971 The qualifying races for the Daytona 500 were official races, and season points were awarded...While the Duels aren't official races, they are a 4th stage for the 500
I miss the coke vs Pepsi and beer wars when you would knock the competitors bottle off your roof in victory lane
I wanted the victory lane interview which it also a tradition and the 4th of July race in Daytona instead of the Chicago Street course
Here's an idea as nascars 1st race with NBC nascar races at the Chicago street course

I wish the 4th of July Daytona race would come back. There is just something about Daytona and racing on the 4th of July that feels right.
And start at 10:00 a.m. like it used to. Well hell yeah.
Yeah I agree with with you on it, but some of the “know it alls” are chiming in saying “oh it’s not returning”. But they need to understand fans like me are still very bitter about the move to August. I really want that tradition to return but the city just refuses to let it happen because the only thing they care about is money, that’s just an opinion. But I absolutely agree that the July 4th Daytona race is a must keep staple of the sport.
except, of course, if there is a long redflag in 100 degree weather, and you run out of beer...
Great video. As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR, here are 7 F1 traditions that will never come back or would not work today in response to this.
1. Tobacco sponsors (though Philip Morris is still involved in F1 to a certain extent via Mission Winnow at Ferrari)
2. The British GP rotating tracks every year (F1 is staying at Silverstone for the foreseeable future)
3. One race per season per country (This is being broken entirely next year as the US will be the first country to have 3 F1 races in a single season)
4. Refueling
5. Fans being able to freely walk through the paddock
6. The Russian GP
7. Racing at the original Nurbergring (the 12.9 mile layout)
Don't worry, in a few years the US will be broken up and those three races will be in different countries again. 😅
The Russian GP wasn't so much of a tradition
The U.S. was already the first country to have 3 GPs in one season.
Cause F1 is trying to build a fanbase in the US.
One race per country wasn't really ever a thing in the first place, they just called it the San Marino and European/Luxembourg GPs instead of a second Italian and German one.
Even then, the outrage over America having 3 races has always been dumb IMO. Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas are on the eastern, central, and western sides of the continent, and the US is pretty comparable in size and population to the entire EU. Only having one here would be the equivalent of only having one European race at, idk, Monza.
Linda Vaughn (the original Miss Hurst Golden Shifter) definitely disagrees with trophy queens being phased out.
To be fair, though, NASCAR would have to make adjustments if the race winner was gay or a woman. While I don't think most people would mind seeing a lesbo kiss in Victory Lane, that does seem like something that would need to be worked around.
@@nascarfanatic2425 I don't think a woman would mind if another woman kisses them. They usually do that to greet each other. Pfft
@@nascarfanatic2425 no need that gay crap
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld Good point.
@@loutenant9480 People of all walks of life have a say-so in racing if they can drive or work on a car. And as far as I can tell, there's only one person who's come out as gay in NASCAR, and he never even made it to the Truck Series, so if we're going to be homophobic about this, you at least don't have to worry for a while.
One thing that I wish NASCAR would change is to not throw the caution at the stage finish. Yes, the drivers would still be given points by each stage, but they will just keep going. This would make the races look more like they used to.
I miss the Winston Cup and Busch Series. I still call it that way these days lol
The Front Stretch Interviews have got to go
MRN/PRN still do victory lane interviews at least
@@snuffynt I know but it's not the same
@@snuffynt Hmm maybe MRN and PRN can do frontstretch interviews while the networks do the Victory lane interviews.
Hey Iceberg, I just want to tell you that I've really been enjoying your channel and the content that you have been showing. In fact I believe that yours is the BEST NASCAR oriented product on RUclips. The fact that the content is so wide spread and is not just a race recap is what is of major interest to me. Thank You and keep up the great work! (PS, your narration voice is professional and is not grating as I've found so many other NASCAR channels to have become.) Oh yeah, also NASCAR needs to reinstate the July 4th "Fire Cracker 400", kissing the trophy girls and post race celebration should ALWAYS be held in "Victory Lane."
Stage racing has got to go
Stage racing itself is fine. Just get rid of the cautions at the end of each stage.
Oh stop u don't even know when stage racing started
@@Catdude1991 do you know when it started?
The 4th of July race at Daytona must come back
Personally I'd want to bring back kissing the trophy girl if I was a single driver. Looking at you Gragson 😂
Yeah im sure the trophy girl would love a puke kiss 😅
You might feel differently if you were the trophy girl.
Gross
You should do a video on the best traditions in NASCAR
Missed traditions are Nascar Preseason Thunder and Friday at the track for practices
One tradition that I want back is merely racing at Daytona under the lights on the 4th of July. Along with that, bring back Pepsi as sponsor of the 400. One tradition that guys did was when they headed to Darlington, they would stick a plank of wood and shove it in the passenger side of the car aiming at keeping the fenders from digging into the tires.
the only form of Pepsi come back is if Coke Leaves and i doubt Coca-Cola will do it any time soon
The "If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying" mentality. For decades finding slick ways to skirt the rule book was an integral part of the sport. Junior Johnson, Smokey Yunick, and others were considered brilliant for it. Now you are practically run out of the sport if you get caught for even minor infractions.
Separate souvenir trailers for each driver.
Part time teams and drivers that are legit contenders to win when they do show up to race.
Tape delayed race broadcasts.
No speed limit on pit road, and racing back to the caution flag.
One qualifying session to lock in the top 20 starting spots, then a second where you could make another run or stand on your time
Fatal accidents on a regular basis. Not a tradition but it used to happen and fans just accepted it was part of the deal. Most people would quit watching if they saw that happen now.
I’m from Wales 🏴 and I used to loved the tradition of Daytona on July 4th UK time start at 1 in the morning and then British GP hours later getting rid of this great American tradition is ONE of NASCAR worst decisions simple as
I agree, the 4th of July Pepsi 400 had a nice ring and fit real well
Right on, that tradition ended because the city knew that the August date would give them extra profit from it, and that’s what makes the fans even more upset with the move, but all the fans can do for now is keep putting more and more pressure on the city and the track in order for it to possibly happen. All the city of Daytona Beach cares about is money because it’s money talks these days. But truthfully I don’t know.
@@zacharysampiere7362 City of Daytona has rule over the track (the track actually is on a terrain owned by the city and leased to NASCAR) so they will almost always final word
If they want the race be outside July 4th so they can win more money so be it
@@superninja252 I actually just learned something new from what you said, so the track is actually leased to Nascar since it’s on a piece of property owned by the city, but I’m thinking they moved it to August because when it was in July, the city just kept losing money and the August date was a more viable option, that’s my thought on it. But I don’t know if that’s true or not.
@@zacharysampiere7362 we can do theories about it, but is is fact that the City WANTS NASCAR after July 4thsince it basically creates a new holiday so people can visit it
Speed channel and the live programming from Speed stage trackside - this started the boom in the sport in 03'ish then it left and decline started
Drivers smoking in the car- that’s hilarious 😂
In the 50's, Tim Flock would race with a live monkey in the car
Kissing the bricks is sexual assault. Those Bricks never consented! In current year, it's simply not acceptable!
I truly would not be surprised if they banned that
5:06 *laughs in Whelen Modified, Camping World (Craftsman) Trucks Series, and Xfinity*
I can come up with 7 myself.
#1 Fans enjoying the racing.
#2 Not being offended at everything.
#3 Driver interactions with fans.
#4 Letting the racing speak for itself and not needing a "show".
#5 Recognizable sponsors.
#6 Drivers earning their rides based on talent and not funding.
#7 Crowning the most successful driver of the year champion.
So you are saying to all: become the F1. The showing is what makes F1 better. Miami is an explosion off celebrities like Ron liked years ago.
How about show the practice and qualifying again. With the qualifying have the sliding bar at the bottom so we know exactly how fast their laps are.
I miss those Monster girls days.
Me too
The confederate flag ban is not enforced, seen too many people flying them even at NASCAR owned tracks this season to pretend otherwise. Plus lets be frank, outside of America, if NASCAR is trying to grow the sport in international markets, they wouldn't care about the flag because outside of America it's seen the way it was seen inside America just a decade ago: a generic symbol of rebellion and of the south that no one really takes offence to, and unlike America the rest of the world really hasn't gone along with some LA and New York media types trying to force the perception to change.
Well said! Only the enabling (hold your hand & pay your bills) people in this country have some bizarre problem with it. Absolutely no understanding! The ignorance brought on by arrogance scenario. Sad place this country has become.
I've recognized that flag for what it stands for since the 90s (it's part of what made Pantera so cringe).
You'd be surprised at how many foreigners know exactly what that flag has always represented. There's a reason why in Germany it's what the white supremacists use instead of flags associated with the NSDAP.
Keep denying reality to yourself if you need to, but reasonable people understand that's the flag of traitors who fought a war because they felt entitled to own their fellow man.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 we both know you're the rare exception
@@ZontarDow Not as rare as you might wish to think. People are better informed these days, the Lost Cause myths are easily debunked and less widely taught.

Having a points format that makes sense
Trophy girls should go back to being the norm but unfortunately people have become weak and over sensitive to everything.
Race back to the flag
Long pit stops
Open car haulers
Hat guy passing out all the hats in winner circle
How about the Union 76 Girls that served as hostesses at the races in the 1960s. Sharply dressed in Union 76 uniform colors in miniskirts and white go-go boots.
Heck, the NFL has cheerleaders. So, what's stopping Sunoco to copy what Union Oil did a half-century ago.
Probably the desire to not seem antiquated. It's cringe as fuck when Super GT does it, why should NASCAR debase themselves just so some sexually frustrated goobers can drool for a few seconds?
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 Finally a proper opinion on why trophy girls aren't a thing anymore! And yes the Super GT girls are cringe-y as all get out. Amusingly the cars look better than their women do most of the time.
About 'win Sunday sell Monday'; I think it's time for NASCAR to stop even trying to match the on track product to production "stock" cars. NASCAR hasn't been anywhere close to stock in decades. That's IMSA now and I like IMSA. However I want my NASCAR high horse power and filthy. I don't want to hear BS about reducing HP, pretending to be production cars, and looking electric for the future(regular life needs to move towards green energy, not NASCAR).
I truly believe NASCAR should look at just making the best most bad ass cars they can. They can still be Chevys and Fords ect just like real car manufacturers power indy cars and F1, but let's stop cosplaying as street cars. Decal headlights and tailpipes are RIDICULOUS and that's just a small part of it. Release the Kraken NASCAR.
IMSA and NASCAR both focus a lot on balance of performance.
It sounds like you're advocating for NASCAR to become a super late model series but that's at odds with the product them and the manufacturers wish to present.
Personally, I want the opposite direction. I want IMSA to go back to the GTO days. It'd be dead easy to do these days, put a GT3 homologated engine into a 7th gen chassis and stick either a Cup car or TA1 car style body on top. Voila.
Victory Lane interview
The race to the line when yellow thrown.
Now that was racing
One nascar tradition that wouldn't be allowed today would be actually having to have talent to get into a good car and not just daddys money.

As for the win on Sunday - sell on Monday thing, when I bought my first new car a few years ago, I went with a Camry, not because they win, but because it appears to me that they show the most support for NASCAR through their sponsorships and promotion much more than the other two makes.
Well of course. Toyota bought their way in
When buck baker won the 64 southern 500, he aggressively kissed the trophy girl, then immediately kissed his wife in victory lane. It was a lil cringey
I think Nascar should give the woman and driver a choice, if they want to kiss each other on the cheek. if they are both known to be single and they don't mind, have at it. it's not they're tongue kissing or even kissing on the mouth.
1. Season-long points championship that rewards consistency. 2. Make winning a race prestigious with larger purses. 3. No more stupid stage racing, go to the local dirt track Saturday night for that. 4. No green-white-checkered finishes. The race lasts X number of laps, period. 5. Eliminate yellow flag tire changes. Make the driver pit under green only like in 1991, made for some good races. Also use a harder compound that needs changed less often, racing on warn tires separates the men from the boys. 6. Reduce the number of races and make the remaining races all 500 miles to the extent possible. 7. Single file restarts after yellows. Stop having good cars get crashed for artificial excitement. 8. Little to no downforce on the cars. Let the good drivers win. 9. Go more stock on the cars and have them be less specialized. If you want a car to sell on Monday, you actually have to race it on Sunday, not just use the badge. 10. Run races in the late morning/early afternoon. Prioritize fans in the stands vs those on TV. This would truly expand market reach and entice people to the track and emphasize individual races

People will be at home watching NASCAR on July 4th since it is a national holliday. It is not the great American tradition not having Daytona on July 4th.
I know local tracks that do have women drivers and they worked around it with local male models as the trophy guys to present women drivers who win races and kept the trophy girls when guys won. Great video. Here are 3 big ones that could be added… Actually racing and not taking breaks in the middle of the race (stages). A points system that crowned the best driver for the season. Lastly, a huge fan base that had sellout crowds. Oh the good ole days…
I'm fine with doing stages for points but keep it green, just award the points at the certain lap but don't throw a yellow.
The confederate flag one is odd. Because I went to the southern 500 this year. Inside the track limits there were no rebel flags (obviously) but on almost all the campers outside there was at least one hanging on it. It just shows that the people that are actually interested in going to the races take pride in their heritage
What a heritage to be proud of. WOO! Our ancestors were racist vermin who we're proud of for losing their war to own people! Woohoo!
What a thing to celebrate. 🤣
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 I'm not going to gloss over the fact that The flag did originally stand for that. But you also have to remember southern heritage other than that. And I'm not talking about the racist stuff, I'll admit there was a lot of that. But something like NASCAR is part of southern heritage because it originated in the South. When I was at Darlington I wasn't thinking "Ah these people must hate African Americans." Okay long story short. The rebel flag is used (by sane people) to symbolize "Hey, I'm proud to be from below the Mason-Dixon line" and not "I want to own other humans that look different" in fact anyone that does think you should be able to own other people is the complete opposite of sane and deserves to be thrown in jail.
@@flyingace5057 Originally? It's never stopped standing for that and that primary meaning taints any ability to use it to mean anything else.
Think of the symbols associated with the NSDAP. Have they been successfully rehabilitated or are they still tainted by association?
Same thing with the traitor's rag. It's primary meaning is it's connection with that cause. People can insist they're separating it from that cause but they'll have to deal with being reminded they can't.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 you know what, you have a fair point. I guess for some people it's about their perception and that's why they fly it. They think it means something but other people think it means something completely different. All that being said, I still think the design for the flag is beautiful even though it may mean something that is terrible.
@@flyingace5057
From a strictly aesthetic standpoint, it's a good design, zero argument there. I get why people like the design.
It's a hard issue to discuss with most people and I don't believe people who oppose it always do a good job of making the case for why it's a problem, which makes people dig in when they otherwise might not. People hear the r word and feel like they're being attacked.
It's not even a matter of whether or not defences of it are in good faith; I'm sure most of the people who defend it just don't think too deeply about the worst meanings instead of embracing them, but at the same time, if it's just about having a symbol, maybe another one could be adopted.
Nations change flags to show they're breaking ties with something in their past. I don't think there's anything wrong with southerners being proud of being from the south, but that symbol seems to tie that pride to things that one probably shouldn't be proud of.
Phoenix Being The Championship Race. I Miss Homestead Being The Last Race.

Nascar changing over the years is a double edged sword.
The last one, is a stuoid move. I stand with the confederate flag and will fly her higher than old glory. If i camp at a race, ill have a confederate flag vanity plate on my truck. And a beautiful flag fly high. If they try anything it will go against the first amendment.
Unfortunately the first amendment doesn't actually apply when you're in private Leone spaces there have been several court cases that have already proven that but there are alternatives that you can use trust me I've been wearing one prominently on a hat and plastered over my car window at New Hampshire for some time now they're not going to notice

The stars and stripes has done much worse over the 200+ years it's been around
@@krisqo1986 The difference is that the CSA's entire existence was explicitly a result of their willingness to fight a war to preserve slavery. Every single traitor state makes this motive clear in their letters of secession.
That's what makes the flags of the CSA on par with the flags of the NSDAP and why the flag of the USA can't be directly compared to them.
The American flag has a long history that isn't exclusively fighting a war for a shameful cause. The only thing the CSA is known for is starting and losing the civil war because they wanted to keep people as property.
Bring the trophy girls back. You don't have to kiss them but bring them back. Bring back Victory Lane interviews and celebrations with the water flying everywhere, confetti falling, hundreds of people crowding the car. Also Nascar tracks should look into making things around the track look more colorful, high tech, or a retro modern style. F1 tracks look so much more pleasing to the eye, especially night races.

I'm a southern through and through. I love my southern heritage. But the Confederate flag was never something I really cared for growing up. I saw it as stupid. Even before I knew about the racial implications. So I was fine with the banning of the Confederate flag. When and why they did it I have a problem with. They should have done it sooner. Not because of social climate at the time. But they saw an opportunity and ran with it.
Meh, it's just a piece of fabric, I wouldn't let it bug ya too much. Even our US flag offends some people, they claim its oppressive or some bs like that. Same with my < Florida Flag. I just use my flag because I like living in Florida. Im sure someone someday will tear it down too. I'll still fly mine because I don't care what other people think, I'm an asshole like that. Do you think our US flag is offensive and stands for oppression? There were slaves under that flag too, not just the confederates. And that flag flew during the slaughtering of Native Americans. You ok with removing it and hiding it away to avoid all the turmoil? Of course not, all these things will never end if we keep folding to the triggered groups of Nancy Boys. Pretty soon we'll end up with a flag that's clear, we'll call it the United Land of Karens. And even that will offend some group of Karens with non transparent flags.
It's good to know there's people who see through the attempts to downplay what that flag actually stood for.

@@nascar_vault I mean... The US is a second place flag due to Vietnam and Afghanistan...
The Rebel 400 was one of the best races there was. But, when the nagaroos see the Confederate flag, they go crazy as an ape. Kno-wh-um-sayn ?
I wish I had the Confederate flag emoji. 🇹🇹. Close enough.
@Todd Jones I have several Confederate flags. Those "darker shade" of people hate it, but there's not one thing they can do. I don't care what they LiKKKe or don't like.

That's what's wrong with the world today. The Confederate flag is NOT associated with slavery, the blax use that as an excuse to BLM = Burn Loot Murder,
The Confederate flag is the Confederate *Battle* flag. It in no way shape or form represents the days of slavery. Try reading some history books, you might learn something.
If Nascar doesn't get back to the racing of old like N.Wilksboro all the fans will leave
Confederate flag was a symbol of Southern pride and purely badass. They had to run an op in SC to get rid of it.
Pride must be synonymous with treachery and white supremacism. 🙄

We might never get back the name "Winston Cup series" but we need that championship format back.
I think we just need that points format. We don't need the title sponsor. I am glad he didn't mention a full season points format, because I do personally think that a full season points format actually would sit pretty well with a modern audience. Sure, you would have those few who would act horrible and throw a tantrum, but most seem like they would appreciate the merit behind a format like that.
That point system was good, but really any full season points format would be better than the current system.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 even the old Chase system that only they did was add points after some part of season would do that as well
Not really. Look at 1994-2003. During that time period, the championship would usually get clinched with 1-3 races remaining. Basically making those remaining races worthless exhibition races. When the championship was declared that soon, the remaining races tanked ratings wise. That's 1 big reason why the Chase was implemented in 2004.
@@superninja252 Yeah. I Take The Original Chase Format With The 2004-2006 10 Driver/2004-2013 10 Chase Race Format, Rather Than The 2014-Present Elimination Playoffs Format.

One of NASCAR's newer traditions that needs to go away forever is having 8 yellow flag laps after a single car spin with no contact or after each stage break.
