Hey. This just came across my feed. I'll have to see whether my budget can stretch to get this book, but it sounds excellent. I have an American history project reading from the colonial period to the present. This sounds like a great fit for the Reconstruction sub list.

Just about done reading this book myself. I’m a UVA alum too. Although I never took her classes, I was a history major there focusing on European and Chinese history.
It was very well written and detailed.
James Longstreet I feel could really use a biopic both because it would be a timely depiction of the true conditions of the south, the civil war and the lost cause myth after the last few years of contention, could exonerate his record fully in a way that fully depicts his flaws and strengths… and give us new eyes into the significant period of reconstruction, why and how it failed and how we can apply the reconstruction era to the present. Too many similarities.

Varon is a great author! And awesome person! Glad you read the book too! Totally agree a biopic would be great as well. It would be very timely.
