    The Tom-Cat
    by Don Marquis
    At midnight in the alley
    A Tom-cat comes to wail,
And he chants the hate of a million years
As he swings his snaky tail.
    Malevolent, bony, brindled,
    Tiger and devil and bard,
His eyes are coals from the middle of Hell
And his heart is black and hard.
He twists and crouches and capers
And bares his curved sharp claws,
And he sings to the stars of the jungle nights,
    Ere cities were, or laws.
    Beast from a world primeval,
    He and his leaping clan;
When the blotched red moon leers over the roofs
Give voice to their scorn of man.
He will lie on a rug to-morrow
    And lick his silky fur,
And veil the brute in his yellow eyes
And play he's tame, and purr.
But at midnight in the alley
He will crouch again and wail,
And beat the time for his demon's song
With the swing of his demon's tail.

Love your videos and thanks for sharing your experiences. I’m a retired Afghanistan & Iraq Navy SEAL veteran. I run into fakes and phonies all the time, people who claimed to have been a SEAL, but weren’t. Since leaving Rhodesia, have you ever run into people who claimed to have been a Rhodesian veteran but wasn’t ? Maybe you could make a video about those experiences if you have? I met a fake Rhodesian veteran at a gear show here in the US. When I asked him, the Guy couldn’t remember what regiment he had served in. I gave him a dirty look and walked off. So if I’ve met one, you’ve probably met a few too! Cheers ! 🍻

ivica hudika hey sir I know what you mean. However, if you ever want to see what a true hero is, a true karate master, a real CIA counter intel hit man who was drafted by William Casey himself, look up Frank Dux. Movies were made for his indefatigable gallantry. We must get his name out there in order to teach the world what hero’s have come up in America, and thereby give hope to the rest of the world in order to achieve world peace. Just knowing Frank Dux lives in America and continues to train our AF’s would be enough to convince other powers not to get out of line.

Unfortunately l had meany friends in Selous Scouts & so was able to spot the bs from a mile away. I would always mention names of lesser known officers & NCOs & this would stump them. Everyone knew of Schullie, Ant White, Dale Collett, Piet Van Der Riet, & Dennis Croucamp but it was the lesser guys ( in no way less brave than the few I've mentioned) who would catch out the the Walter Mitty types. I know that Scouts & Rhodesian SAS got so pissed off with these bullsh-ters that their respective veterans committees published nominal roles, so you could quite quickly check up on someone

As a former Canadian soldier, I worked with (two for sure) Canadians who went to Rhodesia. Both, one RLI, and one I'm not sure which unit (possibly logistics as that was what he did in Canada) had nothing but high regard for their Rhodesian counterparts. Both men went to SA after Zimbabwe and one served in Angola with the para's. Again the other's role I don't recall.

That is a man who belonged at an officer's table, and certainly was a Patton-esque believer. Rhodesians fought the good fight; for the preservation of the culture that made the opening of this planet possible. For whatever (many and varied) reasons we failed to enlist the Shona and the Matabele. We did not have a realistic 'hearts and minds' strategy that included them. Neither could we time-locked colonials be convinced that creating entry points into the culture of education, reading, thought, manners, science, scholarship, professionalism, discovery, value-creation that made such territories possible should be opened more widely to them. We were in a strategically impossible bind of our own making.
The RhAR experience in the Malayan Emergency hinted at what we could have done. But human culture generally moves slower than frozen molasses so it may have been a big ask. However Roger's 'Last Resort' seems to indicate they were primed and ready, fertile soil, so we did something right.
I miss it, for all the wrong reasons elucidated above. We failed them and gave them the monster that was Mugabe. Locking them into the 'liberated' Africa's timeline.

Could you tell me where you live today? I'm an American living in California. The bush wars, as I'm coming to learn, occurred while I was a small child. I draw parallels (perhaps in just small ways) between Rhodesia and the US today. More and more I feel like a stranger in my own home town, and I see things here changing so quickly. I'm guessing you eventually had to leave Rhodesia and am curious where you and other Rhodesians ultimately re-settled. Did some go to Australia or New Zealand? I'm hoping most didn't go to SA, given the troubles that exist there today.

We have plenty of problems in Mexico but at least they are straight forward. All we have to do is look at the history of Rhodesia and whats happening presently in SA to see whats coming for the US and sadly our cousins in England are in worse shape than we are.

Great to hear these stories even though I belong to the Nation that walked away from Rhodesia, which reminds me of the verse...
    Galatians 6:7
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
And that goes for individuals as well as nations...
    Job 34:29
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
As I now watch them tear-up the foundations of my nation, and cast them into the sea. Yet, I look towards a better resurrection built on better promises, me being a citizen of a better Kingdom soon to come.
    2 Peter 1:11
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Hearing of these events causes me to reflect... that though emotions run deep and loyalties forged in the crucible of combat are made strong, that nothing of this age is set to remain but will soon pass away.

Hello, Sir, I am from Yakutsk, Russia. I have discovered your channel today, and your stories are fascinating to me. Rhodesian war always seemed to me, for some reason, a strangely romantic and exotic conflict on the fringes of the Cold War. Even the name of the country is romantic - Rhodesia... I have never watched or read a first hand account of those events. Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. I am sorry that the country you served and fought for is gone. You are a nice man, I would be honored to shake your hand, if I could. Stay safe during these strange times

I told him honk the horn, he responded “No Sir... They will kill us”!! I’ll never forget that... lol You’re absolutely correct my Angolan driver pretty much told me (Jumbo is Boss)!

I was 14 years old in 1975 and wanted to join the Rhodesian army. I lived in New Orleans, USA at that time. My mother refused to sign for my passport. I tried to get on a merchant ship going there but no one would let me on ship without a passport. I gave up by age 17. Still remember ole Rhodesia.

Battles and bravery do not win wars. Some causes are doomed to fail from the beginning like let's say Brexit. People blame Mugabe for the mess of this country, but the cause goes back to the 50s, and especially in the 60s. The UDI is the real cause of today's situation but of course, most Rhodesians will never acknowledge that. In 1965 Rhodesia needed more enlightened leaders who would inform the Rhodesian John and Joan Q public that African rule is an irreversible aspect of history. The second he should have done was to find a way to deal with ZANU and ZAPU instead of bringing the country into a war and then try to trick the US, UK and UN along with the African population by dealing with Sithole and Muzorewa and ignoring the nationalists. The UDI leaders anyway sat on the table in 1979 with the nationalists why they didn't do it ten years earlier? Even today, the fanatics call them terrorists they don't acknowledge that they were nationalists who took arms to fight against what UDI had created. Extremism causes more extremism, so, naturally, a dictator would be the continuation after Ian Smith's regime. What are we expecting? Zimbabwe after UDI and the war, overwhelmed with all these social, and economical problems would become Denmark? So, let's see the root of why Mugabe came to power instead of someone more moderate.

I was present at a meeting with R-D, Denard and Malloch in ‘78. At 20 I was the youngest in the room, but my Grandfather told me to NEVER be too impressed by any man. This stood me in good stead, and my opinion was sought several times. I knew my bit, so there was no need for nerves.
I didn’t get on with my Grandfather though, he was a cantankerous bugger who preferred to get drunk with sycophantic idiots at the British Legion every night than be with his family.
But he was among the Canadians who took Vimy Ridge in ‘17. He was wounded at Passchendaele and carried a bullet around in his shoulder.
Anyway, his advice was good in my opinion. All men have flaws. The more lights shone upon them, the more they bask and the more they inflate their egos. The most impressive guys don’t seek fame or glory.
Nice story about the elephants. I used to love watching them and could do so for hours. Then, as if by magic, they would just melt away into the bush.

You remind me of my grandpa telling me story's of Vietnam. Maybe becuase I was young (and dumb) I was always wanting to hear stories of him running and gunning. Now I know I like the stories about the elephants and the paint falling off the trucks. Well you see my papa would say, if the paint "fell" off the trucks, that gallon paint got the steaks for the guys, that got him a prostitute, but he didnt want a prosititute. He just wanted to call home to my granny to surprise her.
