  • PhD watch! I talk about my latest theoretical result! I talk about the videos that are coming out! I whine like a little bitch!
I have been putting so, so much effort into this channel this month and I'm sorry for whining but I guess I'm just tired. I'm tired of apathy towards global warming and the lack of action we've seen so far. I am incredibly grateful to the audience that I have and I hope you all realise that. I am unbelievably privileged to have this platform and be able share parts of my life with you all, and I hope to never lose sight of that. I guess I just wish that people viewed the world the same way that I did. Which is maybe what it means to be human.
Please do comment below with why the global warming hasn't sparked your interest though. I'm not angry or judging, I'm just curious as to why.

I mostly never comment on videos, but this has to be said. Thank you for making the recent crash course videos, yes Global warming is happening. You deserve more views, this topic concerns us all ! I have found ur crash course series very informative, living as a student in Austria I will be writing a kind of dissertation when i finish my high school (equivalent to A levels ) and I have decided on ' Global Warming focus on Landscape changes Austria/ Nepal ' . So please do continue posting,I see all the work u put into making this content.

Thank you for making these videos :) It's wonderful that you are explaining complicated science in a structured and logical way. It's also intriguing to see the actual working process of science research, it's not easy to find this level of science content on the web. Your videos help me to get a understanding of the plant's climate, you really show the importance of atmospheric physics, and how environmental science is not just about observing that "nature". I enjoy watching your videos very much, best of luck with the paper!

I've received the videos in my subscriptions, but I've put them on my 'watch later' list, because -honestly- most of the time I watch youtube videos at night as a way to relax after a long day of class/studying/work. Global warming (etc) is not exactly an easy subject, my mind needs to be clear in order to watch a video like that. But I will definitely get to it. I think the crash course serie is a fantastic idea, especially for those among us (like myself) who don't study science. Please don't be discouraged by the lack of views, some of us just don't watch videos immediately after they've been uploaded. I really do appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos.

For me, I get your videos and I watch them! If I had money I'd donate, really. I don't understand why people are not interested. Your videos are really good and you choose amazing subjects! I thank you so so much for all your efforts and the life experiences you teach us. As a student at the final year of high school, I find your videos extremely useful! Thank you for your passion, you deserve so much more!
    Much love from Morocco.

I get the videos in my sub box, but haven't watched them (except the first two) because I'd rather watch them all in one go once they're all out (otherwise, with a degree on the go, I tend to forget what I've seen in the previous one by the time I watch the next one). I know it can be disconcerting to put a hell of a lot more effort into those videos than vlogs and get a fraction of the views, but if it feels worth it to you to do them, then its worth it regardless of view counts; I'm sure those who do watch and stick with them really have a strong interest in them and thus are more engaging/find them more rewarding than if all your subscribers watched them without paying much attention and forgot all about it the next day.
Also, I think a lot of people (me included to an extent) are subscribed because they're interested in you and your opinions/what you get up to (including your research to an extent) as opposed to your field of study in detail. Don't forget too, that plenty of people just aren't really interested in physics/specific areas of it just the same as plenty of people aren't interested in make up tutorial videos or SciShow; people have different tastes. I think most of the people who have stayed subscribed to you for a longish time have done so because they're interested in you, that doesn't go hand in hand with being interested in physics or oxford.

I also think you're a great Internet personality, but personally I'm not too interested in the physics of the atmosphere. I'm very aware that it's incredibly important, but it's just not for me. So I hope you keep making the crash course series for those who watch them, but as for me I see them on my feed but do not watch them

I don't tend to watch your (anyone's) videos as they come out. It's usually only when I've feel like I've got the time. Also I'm taking fluid dynamics this year (which is great but challenging) and so your videos have happily coincided with that which I appreciate. I think they do come up in my sub box but I usually just search for your channel or get them when you tweet about it.

I love your videos and find them incredibly interesting, of course, I don't understand some things you say but I hope that comes with age. I understand most of what you say and I really don't expect you to change your difficulty for understanding for a slim percentage of the audience who are 12 years old :) Anyway, keep it up! I love your videos and even to a 12 year old who doesn't understand 1/17th of what you say they are very interesting.

I think the reason most people don't click on on your crash course videos, its cause the content may seem intimidating. I was thinking about this when watching MinutePhysics, his videos seem really easy to understand, mainly because he uses markers, a whiteboard, and stuff like that. Perhaps that could help, even though I know not everyone has the skill and patience to make such drawings and edit the massive amount of footage this format takes.

  • @omarmassoud8811

    Well :)
First of all I have to admit that your crash course videos are really awesome. The effort you put in those videos really worth it. About the views of the previous videos, I think that the main reason for that decrease in the number of views is that you have uploaded MANY videos in a very short time. I think people don't like to be overloaded with videos, especially when these videos are educational. I didn't open youtube for the past two weeks, and when I did I found 6 new videos on your channel that I have to watch. Maybe try to upload two videos only per week or even less.
Thanks again for your videos :)

I'm very interested in global warming, and watch most of your videos about it. The problem is, I think I've heard it all before. I'm currently doing Geography, World Development and Environmental Studies A-Levels, so I hear a lot about climate change. It's mostly just my ignorance to think that I know enough, but I think that's the issue with other people too. If I go and ask a friend, who does preforming arts stuff at college, do you want to watch a video of climate change, they'd probably say no. Maybe because they don't care, which is truly sad and probably very rare, or what I think it is is that they've "heard it before".
I've watched hundreds of videos about climate change on youtube, and will most likely continue to as it is a topic that i'm really interested in. But for people that don't share that passion, it's a video that they at least think, have seen before, if not from school, or simply another youtube channel that has touched on it before.
With your Vlogs, people want to watch them because they're about something new, even if its you just talking about what you had for dinner, its something they've never heard before.
I don't know how to solve this, but maybe try and talk about very new advances in climate change. New solutions etc. Try sharing your videos on the /r/geography subreddit, people over there love educational geography videos, and im sure there will be a subreddit for physics and stuff. There's probably a subreddit simply for educational videos.
Don't get disheartened, you're doing a great job.
Oh yeah and forgot to say, I do receive your videos in my sub box.

I was actually quite intrigued by the crash course, as I did watch all of them. Although I am interested in theoretical physics, I actually found these crash courses to be quite appealing . Global Warming is one of the biggest, if not the biggest issue we face as a society but as a society we cannot seem to reconcile with that. Honestly , I think I am a bit of an exception as I had a use for this series in my Extended Project relating to the climate on mars and that niche is awfully specific.
It may be in your favor to upload these videos less frequently even having finished the videos (cough*...Vsauce...*cough) to leave the audience in suspense and waiting for more, but this of course may turn out to be a horrible piece of advice so take this with a grain of salt. I think that your crash course did cover new material which many would not otherwise be aware of.
I might also be an exception as I came to your channel through the crash course as well.Last of all, I think your audience in general came to your channel with the intention of watching the vlogs and garnering advice on how to get into Oxford. Issues such that do not concern humans rarely get the spotlight they need and deserve, I guess we are bit selfish in that respect.
P.S (It may also be a bad piece of advice) I suggest you start a second channel for your Crash Course , as I think this one of the situation when this is appropriate. By doing so , the audience may seem to diversify and the view count may explode. What I see right now is a niche within your own niche audience watching these videos. Finding another bigger niche within the RUclips community to present your ideas and may provide the coverage that this topic desperately needs.
This calls for a new channel.
For Example: I watch sci show space and not sci show and such the prime audience is catered to.
Sigh...Or this may be some incoherent rambling

Hi, I do get your videos in my feed and I watch most of them. I think one reason why you might be getting fewer views is that many people came to you because of your Oxford videos related to the application process, your life there etc; they may not be interested in all of your videos, yet they subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work though!

I haven't gotten around to watching the latest videos yet. It isn't that I'm not interested, it's just that if I going to watch a video, even a three minute one, I want to make sure that I'm actually going to be able to invest enough energy into absorbing the information given. Once sit down to watch them, I'll watch several, and I really do learn a lot from them, but I don't feel like there is any point in watching educational videos when I won't absorb the info from them. Not sure what you can do about this kind of problem, as the fault lies with me. Maybe leave a week between each video to give people a chance to catch up?

I get your videos but haven't watched them all. I think people generally know what causes global warming and what we need to do to avoid the worst possible scenario, but they just discount the future value too much, and therefore there is lack of political consensus on climate change. When I have time, I enjoy watching videos about universe or mathematics, because they are curious and surprising. Probably I'm wrong, but it seems like there is little "mystery" about climate change.

Honestly, I think it's the thumbnails.
I know that I am far far far more likely to click on a video if it features a human face, which is generally what you'd expect from most people. If I had not watched your content before, based on the thumbnails, I might expect the crashcourse videos to be pretty dry (soz harsh). The videos do feature you, and they are exciting, so I don't think including yourself in the thumbnail would detract from anything.

I do take RUclips as one of my education resources, but I 'm still not very fond of your crash courses.First,I know quite a lot about what you're teaching in the global warming videos already,I don't think I should spend more time watching it .Second,I know the importance of global warming, but I believe what I can do about is very limited. This is,clearly, not something that common individual people reserving little gases or carbon can change, since it has already became a trend. This is something people who have professional knowledge as well as power and influence should be working hard to creat a concert solution. You're already a scientist who graduated from the one of top universities, if you got the chance, try to help your government .Third,I'm more interested in academic life, since I'm a very young person with no background or fortune. If I want to make some chance to the world ,I have to push myself to a higher platform and obtain skills and experiences first.

  • @mattt21
    @mattt21 8 лет назад

I've always been a fan but I don't really like your attitude here. You can't expect success just because you put a lot of effort in. Sometimes you just fail. I find your suggestion that people aren't receiving your videos a bit passive aggressive. Of course everyone is receiving them. Also, don't tell people what to comment on. This is the crowd who made you and is the reason you can make such videos.
You have completely changed your content from vlogs uni and life, to intense informative scientific videos. The reaction will be different because the audiences are different and your viewers aren't subscribed to you for that.
I was planning on watching them but I can't bring myself to after a day of uni work. I'd much rather watch something entertaining. Of all your subscribers I am probably one of the most interested as well.

You're making a mistake if you think people are subscribed to you channel because they are interested in and value the same things as you. They are looking to be entertained and/or experience a personal relationship with you, not being lectured in topics they have no interests in. Perhaps try to present it in a less formal way? Take advantage of the fact that this is RUclips and that you can approach the subjects in a very humorous way.
I'm sorry if this comes across as crude but I think you fail to understand your audience.

    • @SimonClark
      @SimonClark  8 лет назад

+Vincent Adultman I'd disagree with this - I think it's a simplification to say that people only subscribe to a channel because of a personal connection with the youtuber. There are plenty of channels that I'm subscribed to because of the content rather than because of the people presenting it. That said, there is definitely an opportunity for me to put more of my personality into the content than I currently do, for example like John Green does with his Crash Course series. It's also I suppose because I'm going for a more rigorous style of educational content than the 'edutainment' style preferred by channels like Vsauce and Veritasium. I'll be trying more of that kind of content in the future.

    • @vincentadultman4300
      @vincentadultman4300 8 лет назад

+SimonOxfPhys You are right, I was simplifying it but I'd like to point out that I didn't mean to imply that your audience isn't interested in your content. I just think they are more interested in the type of videos you'll find under your most popular videos, which seem to be of a different kind. They mostly seem to be accessible and relationbased or bring up subjects that appeal to a greater audience than (last be honest) fairly niche physics videos.
Now I don't mean to criticize your choice of content in any way and I get that it must be really frustrating to not get the views you had hoped for, or think the content actually deserves, but perhaps there's something to be said for what you would call a less rigorous style. It might just be that people are afraid that they won't grasp the things you are talking about. I imagine the titles can seem a bit daunting to young, non native speakers of english. Perhaps you could go for more of a PBS Space Time approach? By that I mean explore phyics by engaging it through a certain (perhaps even ridiculous) hypothesis. You don't have to sacrifice the actual core physics but sometimes people might need something silly and easy digestible to spark that intial thirst to want to know more.
In the end though, I think you shouldjust do what you love.

  • @lei6786

i have a theory. I think people are not that interested because it is what we need to watch but not necessarily what we want to watch. I think a lot of people, like me, see youtube a form of entertainment. Some are interested in global warming, others may be interested in philosophy. The vlogs however are something that almost everyone can relate to, because well everyone lives.
And I'm sorry I didn't watch your global warming video, because I thought it was just a shorter version of your global warming-crash course, which I had watched.

I do get your videos in my sub box. And yes, I do watch them. My theory behind this problem (I'm most probably incorrect) is that the physics you talk about in this crash course is not to everyone's taste. I personally like all physics, but speaking to some of my friends, it seems as though they aren't so interested in atmospheric physics. As I said though, I love this crash course and I'm really happy with how much I've learnt from you :)

    Hey Simon!
You know me, I'm always around somewhere :D
I didn't watch your recent crash course videos recently, because of school. I'm in my final year and the workload is quite big. Not like yours, but still. I will watch them eventually, if it's on the weekend or I have spare time, but I am trying to get away from distractions and concentrate on other things. Plus, I'm sure if it was something that would help me immediately with say, physics that I do at school, I probably would watch them more often, but again, I need to concentrate (even though I learn a whole lot from your videos)
Do not worry, I subscribed to you to watch your content, and I will, just have a little patience. And DO NOT stop making them, they are AMAZING!!
    Yours truly xx

I get your videos and I think they're brilliant! Really! Superinteresting. But I get your frustration. I study at the university of Gavle in Sweden. In the end of next week we're hosting a bunch of scientist during a two day conference called Consuming the environment. And nobody seems to be interested. I mean, apart from the scientists. People who live around here, other students... and I really can't understand why? So if you get some smart answer, I would like to know as well! ;) Have a great day!

The videos appear in my sub box yep. As a Classics student who subbed because of applying to Oxford and has just remained here as I enjoy your vlogs - I have little interest in atmospheric physics... Despite this, credit to you for the hard work that's gone into them - sadly I don't think this kind of educational video will ever reach the high heights of other types of video.

I think the thing for me was that I knew a lot about global warming and you know, 3 minutes = another john cena vid. In all seriousness, the geo-engineering vid was top notch. I think maybe part of it is that people like the studying/student related vids while you were at Oxford. Hopefully they will see the quality in this content.

I've got them. I'm sure they are valuable and important but people not find them relevant on a personal level. Which of course they are but compared that content with the content of a vlog and it has a completely different impact. Don't forget your life is about studying this stuff day in and day out and subsequently you obviously think it's the most important thing but we might come onto youtube from our own personally important thing, for example other areas of study, and want to switch off. Not read about more woes in the world that we feel like we could have very little personal influence over. People haven't really subscribed to learn about climate change, they've subscribed because they like watching you as a person. Sure they are great, may just take some time to catch on.

your videos are awesome 😄 and i get it when ordinary people don't want to watch it , for example the girls check beauty chanels , celebrities gossip. . etc and for boys they are not interested. but for sure there is certain category wich is massively interested and want u to make more ( people who love science and care about important global issues ) so please keep working hard on what you are passionate about and you have all our support . you are amazing 😁

I get your videos and I have also watched them. Part of the reason for the lower amount of views may be because people use youtube to relax in the evenings and don't really want to watch educational videos when they have probably been at school/college/uni all day. I personally enjoy the videos because I enjoy learning broadly about science that I'm not directly involved in (MSc chemistry student) and they're perfect for giving a basic understanding of topics without having too much depth.
I suspect that your videos will gain a lot more traffic during revision season as they seem to be perfect for GCSE/A-level physics. The content is fantastic but it's not the kind of video that the majority of people will watch in the evening when they want to relax.

If it's any consolation, as a biologist (who's equally interested in and passionate about global warming), I seriously appreciate and, quite frankly, admire you for putting so much effort into all these extremely informative videos to highlight the importance of global warming (and to teach me physics concepts because man, I've already forgotten loads since A-Levels, and it's only been 5 months. Oops).
Your videos are also arriving in my subscription box!

I'm getting the videos but I'm not watching them because I'm not really into Atmosphere & Global Warming. I spend 10 hours at school daily and when I come home I want to watch something refreshing & that I'm interest in and not something that actually takes a brain. I like vlogs and stuff like (most videos you make to be honest) that but not the current crash course videos.
    To the point...

I am getting the notifications and they are appearing in my sub box- that is the good news!
In the global warming area I have two probelms:
i Truth be told the issue has almost become cliche after the huge amount of content on it in the media and the like.
ii I am interested in the process of how one in Science academia gets a degree however, I have no interest in the science itself.
From an objective point of view the videos are incredibly well made and produced though!!!

    • @archerce
      @archerce 8 лет назад

+archerce Just a little something to add, I do enjoy the Paris conference videos because they stimulate my interest in current affairs and therefore, detract problem number 2. Moreover, they regard current issues within global warming and I am therefore very interest in the developments in the field and issue, hence detracting problem number 1. (Thinking about it it would have been more logical to deal with problem 1 first then 2, Oh well!)

I think that the problem is not global warming... It might just be you. You're great at getting the message and information across but I just watched some of your most popular videos and compared it with other science videos I watch and the thing I think is lacking is more of your own personality. I've watched almost all of them the ones I can't finish are just because the content is stagnet not in terms of information but delivery. I can't watch five minutes or less of one of your professor friends or whatever speaking without any passion or joy about whatever they have been saying. sorry not trying to be mean just honest.

I think your educational videos are the type that gain many more views over a longer period of time, having said that, thats all videos, but in comparison to your vlogs theyd get more recognition as people stumble upon them whilst learning or using youtube as an educational source. I particularly watch your vlogs because im more interested in life as a uni physics student but i still do watch your global warming videos. Totally understand how disheartening it can be:((

I get them in my feed and I do watch them mostly to gain an understanding of a topic I don't fully grasp. My degree was in literature and European history. As you can imagine most of science and math just boggles me, but I found your videos rather interesting. As far as global warming issues go I see them in two ways. The first being that global warming seems to be a topic brought up far too often by far too many dishonest politicians who always seem to be working an angle in that area. Secondly, hasn't global warming always been part of our world? I mean this in regards to how our world is naturally constantly changing through ice ages, periods where vast areas were underwater, deserts being formed where oceans used to be (and vice versa)? I have also read some articles by other scientists which claim a lot of the global warming information is built on false information and hype. So, generally I have become a bit jaded on the topic. I would imagine I am not the only one that feels that way.

+Heather S RE: your point about natural variability in the Earth's temperature this is actually covered in a video coming out tonight! A bunch of climate scientists talk global warming and that includes a discussion of the natural changes in climate that we've seen in the past.
