This man, Darrel Walls, is a vocal Beast! I thoroughly admire the Holy Ghost anointing in his voice and The Lord Jesus in his heart. He can almost do no wrong singing. This was one of thee BEST renditions of any song I've herd him sing. I had to stop myself from putting this on repeat cuz is just too good!!!
Definitely Stevie Wonder and feel like Fred Hammond both use their head tilted upward to effect their tone

This is a masterclass on Darrel Walls' voice. I'm so excited to hear Jaron's analysis!
Coming back and listening for the 10th time... I realized that this kind of ballad is perfect for Darrel's vocal style. Though he typically sings gospel, I think this soft, slow, emotional R&B/Soul track gives him a chance to show his vocal prowess... I would love to hear him tackle a Donnie Hathaway or a Dionne Warwick type melody. And Jaron thanks for mentioning the band. That catches my ear every time I listen to this video. (jBTW...Tyrone Bell on keys is the Walls Group's MD. He's a keyboard genius!)
I agree with several commenters who hear a lot of Stevie Wonder in Darrel's vocal styling. I would only add that, IMHO, his sound also is heavily influenced by Kim Burrell, a unique Gospel stylist based in Houston (like Mr. Walls). To me, Darrel is the musical "love child" of Stevie and Kim. If you know, you know!
C'mon somebody. Fully agreed. This is Kim Burrell technique ALL OVER THE PLACE. And of course The Walls and Ms. Kim Burrell are so very close in so many ways.
The Walls, Momma Walls, minister of music, taught all of dem kids, especially Darrel Walls, the eldest, to study the gospel greats.
And Houston has some insane in the membrane, freaks of musical nature just walking around, lol.
So in closing, yes, yes, yes, I felt Kim Burrell, freak of musical nature ALL up in through Darrell's interpretation.

The voice vocal styling changes when well trained. Breathing airy controls are identifiably when skills are honed. DARRELL can sing. TILTING manipulations are a technical skill.
Yummmmmmmy. Why don't they put this type of music on the radio it's so much more mellow, beautiful, calm and graceful

I know I am a year late with this comment but I agree 1 billion percent about PJ Morton’s “Gospel According to PJ”-outrageously good recording and I absolutely agree that PJ should write a musical. Darrel Walls did a great job with this cover. And you did a phenomenal job analyzing it!

I feel like DW does too much, but this right here is great. His choices are spectacular. Do you think PJ and the other musicians arrranged around DW or the other way around? This made happy like when Jasmine Sullivan sings
DW arranged around the original that PJ made/sang. Not sure if you have heard the original, but this one does a lot of harmony with the original song while adding additional runs. His ear for music is crazy!
