  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons has now been with us for 4 years and I wanted to take a look back at this entry into the series and discuss why I feel it doesn't hold up to its predecessors. What went wrong for New Horizons?

I’m replaying New Leaf and I miss the special NPCs that didn’t make it into New Horizons so much! I go to the post office every day. Why couldn’t they have a post office in the airport? Why get rid of the pelicans? Why did they get rid of Wendell? Booker and Copper? Resetti and Don? Kappn’s family? I really hope in the next game they improve the character aspect. Instead of streamlining features behind menus, having them be tied to characters has always been the most endearing part of the series for me.

Something I've thought about regarding villagers leaving the island is that I think what they do should depend on your relationship with them. Like, if you're not particularly close, they'll just leave, but if you're great friends they'll come to talk to you about it first.
I think it would be great to see more interactions based on how you socialize with your villagers.

Something worth noting is that the teams for Animal Crossing and Splatoon are the same. Splatoon 3 being a much larger game needed a lot of attention given the series that it is. That likely played a role.

This was my 1st Animal Crossing, and I played it with my 7 & 9 yr old daughters. They're now 11 & 13, and although we finished absolutely everything a very long time ago, we stil visit Eye Land regularly. The Nooks, Isabella, Hamlet, Bella, Nate, Plucky, and the rest of the villagers have become like real friends.
Some of the stuff you talked about sounds really interesting, and I'm shocked there wasn't more content added, but I honestly can't imagine being more satisfied with the game. I've been gaming for over 40 years, and New Horizons is in my very top tier of all-time favorites. The memories my daughters and I have from 1000s of hours of ACNH are priceless!

Honestly, I'm left wondering if we'll get an New Horizons DX on Switch 2 with everything missing from the OG Switch version. Be it an upgrade fee or if we can migrate our islands to take advantage of new features, more building upgrades, and multiplayer games like from New Leaf would be a HUGE shot in the arm for it. I mean, seeing fully decked out islands just TANK the OG Switch performance is disappointing. So much potential.

I personally have completely different opinion about ACNH.
I LOVE ACNH more than ACNL because for the first time i can keep All my villagers forever no matter how long i didn't play the game.
Added with terraforming in ACNH and more designing aspect like The Sims, i became liking more ACNH than ACNL.
I personally prefer the villagers talk less as i don't even care with their dialogues, as long they are in my island forever, i'm happy and that's more than enough.

I’ve only ever played new leaf, however I’m genuinely thinking about getting a switch to play new horizons.
I’ve only ever played it on my sisters switch and to be honest, it doesn’t seem that bad. When it first came out I had very little interest in it, but now I can’t stop thinking about it.
Genuinely guys, do you think it’s worth getting a whole ass switch for it? Is it really as bad as people say?

    • @Krisselia
      @Krisselia  2 месяца назад +2

I don't think the game is bad! It just had so much more it could have been considering its previous iterations. I originally only bought my switch for Pokemon, and now I have loads of games on it so do what you want to! I'd say the starting part of New Horizons and its customisation is its strongest aspect

Simple: Nintendo misjudged the shelf-life of the game, and pulled the plug too early. They thought the 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise were enough and ended development on the game.

New Horizons, to me, has the same issue Minecraft has. It doesn't matter what you do, the world just feels empty. The multiplayer was a huge disappointment because you basically can't DO anything with your friends except for the basic stuff and yeah it just feels sorta dead all the time.

I agree with what you said in the video and I'm glad a part of the community agrees with this feeling.
Admittedly my two only Animal Crossings have been Wild World and New Horizons. I have such fond memories of WW, the late night talks, the villagers telling me histories, breaking the ice with them and actually getting to know the grumpy ones, receiving letters. Everything was so heartwarming, I adore this game. When NH was announced I was very excited because I sadly never owned a Wii but I do own a Switch. When I started playing the game lacked that charisma it once had, villagers were soulless. Talking to them would end in extremely hollow dialogues assuming it wasn't repeated by the trillionth time.
I do like how you have access to more customization but even that is crippled by the fact that can you realistically even get all the furniture without external help? I've played quite a few hours I'd dare say I must have around 500h or maybe even more and I wasn't even close to owning a quarter of the whole catalogue. With this in mind it begs the question can you really decorate? No you can't, yes you could argue you'd have basic furniture but you'd be missing A LOT of the catalogue and sticking to a theme like I originally wanted to do is pretty much impossible. I wanted my island to have a 70's funky vibe but I ultimately couldn't and gave up. The furniture rotation is awful, I must have seen the same furniture in display a thousand times and no sign of nothing new even time travelling.
With all that said you have on one hand the extremely hollow villagers, and the catalogue being pretty limited unless you fall into the scams of pay x and get the full catalogue type of islands.
After the rant I salute you if you bothered reading until here. And the final question is; was NH a good Animal Crossing? No in my opinion, not even close. If I had to describe the game in one word I'd just use hollow which makes me sad considering the potential this game had, and makes me uncertain about future entries.

What I’ve been saying since April of 2020.
I got into the series about 11 years ago with the release of new leaf in 2013 so Im not the oldest veteran player out there.
But I have over the years played every entry. City folk, wild world, GameCube.
Each game I have thoroughly enjoyed.
When new horizons came out, after a month I just couldn’t do it anymore. But I felt as I was in such a weird predicament. Because the game I had played for years was finally getting recognition. But new horizons was just?? A boring sandwich besides decorating??
And after the 2 years of updates, I just didn’t even see it fit to come back.
Now recently I’ve started up a city folk town again after years and I’m playing that a ton, it’s unfortunate because I do kinda think animal crossing is gonna lean further into decorating. However I’m glad I grew up with the games that I did ❤️

I will say, I think a lot of the criticisms ACNH gets are too harsh but I think what you said is very valid and I honestly agree with you on a lot of this.
I’ve been playing since the GameCube days (have played every mainline game except Wild World) and I do think they went too far in the direction of decorating this time. That said, I still absolutely love ACNH and think it’s an incredible game. To me, every AC game has its pros and cons but the series as a whole has always been there for me. Every game holds a lot of memories for me. There are things I definitely miss from the older games, but there are also things ACNH does really well that the other games don’t.
Overall you did great work on this video and I was so happy to see this upload! (RUclips didn’t show me until 3 days after the upload for some reason)

For a slightly different perspective as someone who never got/played it, the fact that I can't move my save file to a new device without paying for Nintendo Online is ENTIRELY why I never bought the game, or even a switch. That's a stupid decision on Nintendo's part. My history with their systems is FULL of things biting the dust irreparably on a whim - I shouldn't have to pay to save my game on the off chance their system decides to off itself.

I'm just glad New Horizons was my first Animal Crossing game because... I'm not upset, disappointed, ungrateful, sad, mad, or regretful of the purchase. It's a game just like all the others, and I enjoy playing alone or having someone pop by for a visit. Very confused as to why those who are disillusioned don't just play the old games they claim are way better.

I’m so glad it’s not just me 😬 I’m an animal crossing die hard from the original DS and this is the first one where just like you said I felt “burnt out” like the fundamentals had changed and I wasn’t quite sure what I was supposed to do any more.
I didn’t actually like the terraforming as it just felt like too much, I didn’t want to have to bulldoze my whole island and start again I liked having the natural island.
And yeah the upgrades I thought they were going to do so much more :(

  • @mastermarkus5307
    @mastermarkus5307 2 месяца назад

I think that now that the devs have gotten a lot of decoration and customization options in the game, they should focus on the social stuff, and expanding on what you can do with villagers from day-to-day.
One thing I have to give New Horizons over the other games (and I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not), is that I much prefer the graphics to the older games. In particular, I've never been satisfied with having to play a human avatar before now as I thought they were ugly for most of the games.
