They always seem to catch fish that are half their size at the pond and yes, that jay was another nice "blue" surprise to observe. Best wishes for the week. Warm greetings, Cathy
Truly PHENOMENAL footage of this young kingfisher Cathy, I love how close up you were able to film him then from a distance watching him whack that fish so hard before eating it was pretty epic, poor fish though. I always look forward to your videos, sorry I'm a little behind. I wish you a lovely day.
I was lucky at first when the kingfisher was closer and stayed still. I wish he had returned to that first branch with the fish ; ). Thank you dear Heather for taking the time. I hope you are doing okay. Warm regards, Cathy
Thank you so much for watching. The Kingfisher is also a favorite of mine. They are not here that often and am lucky to see them when they are fishing at the pond. Best wishes for the week. Greetings, Cathy
Wonderful close up captures of the kingfisher. Interesting to watch the bird eating a fish. The yellow leaf attached to the tree trunk adds a charm to the video.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed watching the kingfisher. Autumn is arriving and soon all of the leaves will show many beautiful colors. That yellow leaf is possibly a preview of what will come. Have a wonderful week. Greetings, Cathy
Thank you for watching our Belted Kingfisher - it is the only one we have in our area of the country. Not as beautiful as yours but always a pleasure to watch. Thank you for watching dear friend. Best regards, Cathy
You seems so close to her. 😊 She don't seems to be bothered by the noise of the city. She found a good meal ! Maybe the Blue Jay expected a part of it. It’s difficult to see them in my area, they are really shy and most of the time, they stay far of humans. Wonderful video Cathy ! Have a great day ! Best regards, Annie
So true Annie. Seeing a kingfisher is difficult and when I get lucky, they are far. This kingfisher didn't seem to mind the noise of the city and people enough to stop it from fishing. It kept a large distance but I was closer while it rested on the branch. Unfortunately it flew further away after catching the fish. I wish she had returned to the original branch for a closer view but was happy to watch it with its fish. Have a wonderful week!! Warm regards, Cathy
Thank you dear Knut. Kingfishers visit a few times a year and was lucky to have an audience with this one ; ) Best wishes for the week. Warm greetings, Cathy
Thank you very much! It is a favorite of mine too. I don't see them often but I enjoy watching Kingfishers fishing, flying and diving. Have a wonderful week. Warm regards, Cathy
Many thanks for watching. The Belted Kingfisher is the only species we have here in the northeast of North America. Glad to share it with you! Best regards, Cathy
Wow! It was my goal this summer to film the kingfisher catching a fish! I saw it, but not when it came time to grab its prey and hit it. They are quickly these birds. I will be back next summer, hoping to make a film like yours! It's amazing the big fish he swallows! And its almost double that comes to rest right next to it! Superb Quoteny capture and video! What luck! Well done! Have a great week! Best regards! Celine
Thank you dear Celine! They are so fast, I have never been able to catch the kingfisher when it flies off and dives for a fish. Best of luck to you next summer! I was surprised when the Blue Jay appeared, it just seemed curious and left. Enjoy your week! Warm regards, Cathy
Thank you Jarmila for watching and your kind words. I feel the same, the fish always seems so large and takes too long to swallow! Luckily it works our fine for the kingfisher. Warm greetings, Cathy
Yes! When they do arrive in Central Park, I've seen them at Turtle Pond or The Pond. I've been lucky as they don't stay very long. Hearing their rattle call helps as they are hard to spot. Best wishes for the week!
You managed to capture the belted kingfisher slamming the body of the fish repetitively in order to kill it before eating it. That’s there MO. They don’t peck and rip… what kind of camera did you use to film this? Your video is Nat Geo worthy… and to think you took this in Central Park NYC! Hardly any sound of traffic. AMAZING,!thank you for sharing your amazing footage!
Thank you so much for your very kind comments! I used a Canon SX 70 which worked well. I live in a noisy city but sometimes when its early, a visit to the park can be relaxing and so necessary in an urban environment. Best wishes for the week! Kind regards
Thank you so much. I am glad you enjoyed watching the kingfisher. Yes, a Blue Jay stopped by as the kingfisher was finishing her meal, maybe just to let her know he admired her fishing skill ; ) I look forward to your film, they are such great birds to watch! Warm greetings, Cathy
Yes, I also find them very skittish but there was a larger distance (unfortunately for my camera) when she caught the fish and didn't seem to be too bothered by us park visitors across the pond.
I have found these birds to be so elusive when I'm filming--guess I haven't practiced as much patience about that as you obviously have. Got any guesses about why he keeps banging that fish against a limb? It's not like he's banging the fish's head to make it unconscious. I don't see herons do that with their fish.
I find them very hard to spot unless you see them flying or hear their great rattle call. My guess about hitting the fish is to tenderize it or break up the bones so its easy going down. The fish they catch always seem half their size and swallowing it must be a challenge.
@@quote_nature Yep, I love that rattle call. As for the possibility that the Kingfisher is "tenderizing" his meat, I hadn't considered that. I guess I lean more toward the "making sure the fish is dead" school of thought--though unless the bird explains himself, we may never know.
That is quite a big fish! Great footage. Loved the jay coming by at the end of the video

It looks a little bit like a "Punk" -great footage. Thanks for sharing - greetings, Rolf
Most definitely Rolf! Their punky hairdo goes great with their rattle call ; ) Best for the week! Warm greetings, Cathy
That is a beautiful kingfisher :) Seeing the birds hunting and eating is always very interesting.. Great spotting and capture by you!!
Thank you so much for your kind comments. Best wishes for good birding!

Beautiful bird and scenery, my friend...That was a mouthful.....Great capture
