"When somebody comes up to you and says that your art means something that you've never intended, and that happens consistently, you're doing something right. Now you know you're onto something because the door is opened up and you're allowing them to come in, and within your world, find what they need to make their world better. And that's when it's Art with a capital A." - Steve Huston
This sentence just completely changed the way I think about my art now.

@done done "Art is about communicating a message, it‘s an expression. Something that would take hours to explain, but can be soaked up just by a single view. I think his worldview is very limiting and can throw a young artist off completely if he takes it to heart."
its the same limited view on art like his view.
Every Art philosophy and every opinion about art ist limiting the art. You will learn more about it when you read more theories.
For example Adornos and Greenbergs art-philosophies are good. But they are limiting the art itself and this is completely fine. Because no view can explain art. Art will be seen in some years completely different from today. Look at Contemporary art. A lot of people wouldn't even call it art. Because it isn't how they see art.

When I was 10 years old, in 1986, I purchased my first comic book called 3-D Heroes by Blackthorne publishing. It was sword and sorcery, and the cover was painted by the same guy who pencilled and inked it. A guy by the name of Steve Huston. It came with those cheap 3-D glasses, but it was, and still is to me a brilliant piece of work. Steve might think he was a hack back then, but when I look at the painting on the cover, and I browse those pages the figures come alive in a way that other artists can't even imitate. When I'm studying human anatomy and practicing dynamic figure drawing I still go back to that comic. I just wanted to say thanks Steve because of that seemingly small contribution to my world as a kid that made such a big difference.

I'd wondered if that was the same Steve Huston. I've never had a copy of the 3-D Heroes comics, but I'd seen it pop up on checklists and wondered if it was the same guy.

There is a bio on the inside cover, and unless there is another Steve Huston who went to the same school with the same credentials I'm pretty certain it is him. Although I can't be 100 percent certain without him confirming it. Maybe Proko can find out?

When I was younger and starting out as a graffiti artist, we used to buy comics so we could copy or "bite" the artwork straight onto the wall, etc. (We had to paint very fast at times too, lol) Thanks to artists like Steve, it was teaching us & many other graff artists anatomy without us knowing it. No way perfectly but it gave me a grounding at a young age, it taught me muscle memory. Anyway, my graffiti days were cut short some years back due to illness, in my joints possibly from the lead & other toxic shit in the paint, I'm not sure. I went to art school for 4 years but dropped out, The tutors were great, just they rated conceptual art/Abstract, etc. Anyway, I've begun teaching myself painting oils and anatomy, etc, thanks to Proko & artists like Steve, etc. I could listen to him all day too.

@@brunosinga yeah but spicing shit up with drama is pretty much of douch bags. Steve is not necessarily giving off pure truth, i've watched him from time to time (and payed for a couple of his courses) and he's always upgrading his way to see things, in fact i think he's probably the best artist in life and history we've had so far! And i love the opportunity he gave off at least for me to appreciate the human figure and more. If you were a good student you would doubt what he says to find its true value needed for you to progress and doubt yourself aswell, he's always searching for better truths, and im aiming for the best my human capacity can give off. So if you cheaply copy what he says here and dont go too far from that on your own, you're pretty much being a poser.
So this guy above is just from the douchbags that like to trash proko for putting humour in order to entertain a little on his lectures, and i hope you are not because its one of the most irrelevant things to watch out for.

I was privileged to take lessons from Steve Huston when he was brought in to teach the Disney artists in 1991 while I worked there as an animator. He revealed to us the principles developed by the masters in the past 500 years-- principles they should have taught me in college but didn't. I continued to absorb wisdom from this extraordinarily well-informed, skilled but regular guy until he left L.A. for Montana in 2002. He changed my life.

Best complement I can offer to Steve Huston is probably to simply buy his book... However Mr. Huston's humility and wisdom and humor are inspiring... even to a full time truck driver/part time artist who's a year younger than he. Thank you both. (By the way you asked all the right interview questions, Stan)

I guess I just have to be thankful that I eventually did after 38 years :D Fantastic interview for multiple reasons. Thank you.

This is great! I love hearing about a guy who started mediocre and faked his way into greatness. In a way it's not helpful to hear from the rockstar artists who it seems to come easily to. It's hard to learn from someone to whom it comes easily.

Have seen a few utube tutorials by Steve and this lead me to buy his book which is excellent. I wish I could afford to join his online classes as I find his teaching thought provoking and inspirational. So you can image how thrilled I was to see you had done an inverview with him. What a wonderful worth while interview this is too. Thanks both of you for this wonderful opertunity to expand my views and help me to improve my art. Im a pensioner who only started drawing a few years ago so am now great artist but I'm loving the learning journey and am hungry for information.

I love Steve Huston's advice. The video did feel like a class lecture more than an interview, probably because he's used to teaching a class when imparting art advice. I could sense Proko's discomfort with the lack of two-way communication, but thank you, Proko, for delivering this content to us. I really needed to hear that artists shouldn't be so hard on themselves.

    • @passage2enBleu

I thought Proko was truly listening and challenging himself with his own pre-conceived ideas. The transaction of listening deeply draws out the wisdom of the one answering the questions. So I didn't interpret this interview in the way that you did. Good to watch again after a couple of years.

He just asked how her brother was doing and he didn't have say another thing for seven and a half years. We would all be so lucky to have Steve Houston teaching art on You Tube.
