I worked at Six Flags as a teenager and these are all great tips - we did all of these or shared them with friends. The one "do" is DO be kind to those working the parks. It seems obvious but you would be shocked by how many grown adults would pull the tail or hit the head of Bugs Bunny or other characters (they seem to forget there are PEOPLE in those costumes) or scream at the ride operators because a roller coaster wasn't running during a thunderstorm or because a ride wasn't working that day. As with everything, be patient and show kindness.

My practice is to be at the park before it opens, make a beeline for the preferred rides, have lunch and then LEAVE!! I’m back at the hotel for a swim, a nap, etc. then we can go back in the evening for the ambiance, parade, etc.

The one thing I always tell my kids when we go to any amusement park... Wear comfortable shoes! You'll likely be doing a lot of walking & standing in lines. Flip flops are nice but after a while, your feet will be aching. Comfortable shoes are important.

I have some tips to add to list.
    1. If you can, go to the park mid-week as they tend to be less busy than going on weekend and holidays.
    2. Bring a good walking pair of shoes. Wearing sandals or flip-flops could cause blitzers, and you have to store them on cargo bin on other side of station, especially on rides where feet dangle.
    3. Check out evening preview. If you are going for multiple days, you can get in from 4-5pm until closing and get discount so you can get some rides in before next day.
    4. Check out benefits of onsite hotels. Like a Cedar Point (and some of the other parks), if you stay on property, you get additional benefits like discount parking, ticket price, or even early entry before the park opens to public.

More travel tips for amusement parks: 1. A regular season pass for one local park will be cheaper than the multi day passes.
    2. Large bags are for the non riders of your group.
    3. Sunscreen and over the counter medicine (Tylenol, anti motion sickness medication) should be bought and packed before arriving at the park. CP especially charges more for these items and you get less product than at Target or the grocery store.

Also with buying tickets ahead of time, most places have a virtual will call or some other means that allow you to totally skip the FIRST line of the day which is the ticket purchase window. At Magic Kingdom that line with no ride at the end can be 90 minutes on its own. Buying ahead of time is usually cheaper as you pointed out, and with tickets in hand (on phone), you can usually stroll into the park within 5-10 minutes of getting there.

DO stay at a Cedar Point Hotel (Breakers or Breakers Express). Hotel guests get into the park an hour early and there are a few roller coasters open right away. Last time I went they did have two day ride and slide passes that gets you into Cedar Point and the separate water park, great value that gives you lots of time to go on all the rides.
Breakers is on site and more expensive but if you dont mind a short drive Breakers Express offers the same benefits of staying at a CP hotel but cheaper room rates.
Breakers is great for a midday break, just walk to your hotel room and relax for a bit or have some lunch you packed etc.

You were spot on about checking height / weight. It can not only save you time, but it can save you having to take the " walk of shame " when you can't get that seatbelt to buckle or lap bar all of the way down. It slows the ride down for EVERYONE! Most of the big coasters at Cedar Point have test seats at the entrance, and a ride employee there to help you.

  • @MattMcIrvin
    @MattMcIrvin Год назад +5

    A few tips from me:
    - At some parks, some rides have single-rider lines, for people who are willing to be assigned to empty seats. These can be almost as good as a skip-the-line pass if you don't mind riding alone. They aren't always obvious to find, though. Online sources can often help you know they're there and where to go to use them.
    - Don't abuse the single-rider lines, though: I've heard stories of groups going in them and insisting on being seated together. That defeats the whole point and it's obnoxious!
    - Especially with intense rides like roller coasters, many parks will not let you carry loose items on the ride--that's for safety. Obey the rules, but, also, have a strategy for how you're going to do it. Some rides have bins on the platform where you can stow loose articles while you ride; with others, you have to use a locker that might be a rental. Know before you go, if you possibly can. Again, the Internet can be your friend here.
    - At foreign parks particularly, you might want to spare a thought for cash. Many parks in the US have now gone to a completely cashless system for concessions, lockers and such, but the last park I visited was PortAventura in Spain, and while a credit card sufficed for most things, their ride lockers were coin-operated only. I had a bit of a problem because I was out of Euro cash and the ATMs in the park wouldn't accept my card. Should have used the currency exchange desk right outside the front gate!
    - At seasonal parks outside of subtropical climates, the busiest time of the year is the high summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day (and, increasingly, some special horror-themed period in October), but sometimes they'll open for reduced weekend hours outside of that period, in May or September. Those can be your best times to go! The crowds are light and the weather is more temperate. The only down side is that the waterpark areas usually won't be open, and wet rides might not be as much fun. Watch out for Mother's Day, though--they might have some special promotion that gets the place slammed.

Another tip: repeat the rides. Don’t take a ride and go to the next. If the line is ok, ride again and again and then go to the next ride. After all: you’re there to ride the rides to to walk between them, so don’t change too often

This will save you money and you don't need all that food all day long TIMES 2. This way you get your money's worth. Otherwise, it's not really worth it. You can share a meal and 90 minutes later, share another and so forth. Same for drink, but drinks is every 15 or 30 minutes, so no big deal.

Im a lifelong Ohioan and have had a season pass to cedar point every summer since I could drive. I love that place. Remember the park is surrounded by water on three sides. The weather can change QUICK. I always keep a bag with extra (some warm) clothes in the car. My sister got pooped on by a seagull years ago and we had to leave the park to get a bottle of shampoo to wash her hair. Don’t leave right away if it does start raining. The weather might clear up and a lot of the rides end up walk on or with a 5 to 10 minute wait. I’ve had this happen many times. I don’t know how other parks do it but at Cedar Point as long as you’re in line when the park closes you get to ride. Take advantage of this especially if something you want to ride has a long line. My mom used to pack coolers every year too. There are six of us and even then feeding six kids in the park was crazy expensive. I can’t imagine now. I paid almost $20 for two pretzels and two drinks for my niece and I last summer.

Watching this video I can't believe how much things have changed since I visited amusement parks when I was a younger adult. I've visited Disney World about 14 times starting when they first opened in the early 1970s. Back in the day we didn't have to deal with lines and "systems" that are being described in this video. While there were a good number of visitors when I was visiting it wasn't like what it's seems to be now. My last visit to Disney World was many years ago, never realized back then how easy it was. One thing that has really stolen the joy of going to amusement parks is having to plan and strategize everything. I remember being able to just go in and explore at our leisure. The last time I tried to do that it really made things really hard because all the waits were super long because we didn't reserve everything all at once like Disney wanted us to (and it wasn't even a super busy park; Hollywood Studios). I found this true on the last cruise I went on too. I was accustomed to eating at my leisure, seeing shows at my leisure, etc but because the ship was so big (just more people...not more square footage) they were constantly turning people away from comedy shows, dinners, etc.

I've been a park enthusiast since i was a kid. I typically arrive at open and go straight to the newest coaster or the one you know will have a ridiculous line all day., especially if its towards the back of the park. That way you can check it off the list first and work your way towards the front. At Cedar Point, Chickie and Petes (used to be called something else?) used to be our #1 go-to dining option. It's kinda hidden/lowkey so even when everywhere else was packed it always had tables open. Full service indoor restaurant, affordable, decent food, used to have free water refills, sports bar vibe. Although who knows how things have changed since I was there last 4 or 5 years ago. I know parks struggled through and after the pandemic to keep staffed. Cedar point is also not a particularly "beautiful" park compared to a Busch Gardens or some of the others. I do like how you could take a break by going out on the beach. Good times

We live next to SeaWorld and Six Flags. I tell people if you know you’re planning a trip to an amusement park don’t overlook the season pass and for it around Christmas or New Year’s, if you buy it on the monthly payment plan which can start around $6 a month per person It should include parking which can be pretty expensive, on Holiday weekends it can be $35 to park. Our SeaWorld has 2 separate parks that you have to buy tickets for and 1 free area once inside for the aquarium and dolphins. They also have Aquatica which is a separate purchase but the season pass can have both parks and parking included. If you are interested in doing multiple parks SeaWorlds platinum pass about $15 per month per person gives you access to 11 different parks.

You missed a few major don’ts: DONT CUT IN LINE. This includes holding a spot in line for your friends. If the park catches you doing this you will be removed from the park.
This is a new one and only applies at some parks: DONT let your teenagers go to the park on their own and expect them to be able to stay late. This largely affects Cedar Fair parks in particular. After recent events at Kings Island, teenagers 15 and younger cannot be in the park by themselves after 4pm. Parks are beginning to implement chaperone policies that say teenagers a certain age and younger must have a chaperone in the park in order for them to remain past a certain time.

Toe protection in crowds is a great idea. Every person I saw trip and or fall at Universal was wearing flip flops.

One thing I absolutely recommend before getting to the park is to hydrate and eat breakfast. I've been with people who decide to forego breakfast in order to get an extra 30 minutes of sleep, and their energy depletes fast once they're in the park. Eat something, even if it's just a granola bar, and get plenty of water in your system. Sure, you'll need to use the bathroom a few times, but you will have a lot more energy to get through the day.
To add to the "don't wear white" suggestion, if it's going to be very hot and sunny, don't wear black. Darker color clothes absorb sunlight while lighter colors reflect it and will keep you cooler.

The point about not blindly buying the dining pass is a great one. When I bought one, I found that a lot of the more interesting items and restaurants weren't included with the dining pass. So while it CAN work out, but it works better for people that have relatively basic tastes.
There are a few parks that do package pick-up so you don't have to lug your souvenirs around. For some, like Disney, they only do it if you're staying in their resort hotels, but some, like Silver Dollar City or Dollywood, do it for everyone.
If you have a choice, don't go on a Saturday! For almost all parks, Saturday is the busiest day of the week.
You can dramatically increase your enjoyment of the park with some basic research into what the park offers. If you go to WDW and you are confused that they don't have Harry Potter, that's not WDW's fault!

    • @MattMcIrvin

Some of those plans are better than others. I made the mistake of buying the plan at Universal and found that it only worked at a small number of fast-food-type stands. It was nearly worthless. Disney's is better but you have to strategize to come out ahead on it--the last time we went, we didn't bother with it. Paying a la carte is easy enough.

Disney isn't currently sending packages to your hotel; that didn't return from before Covid. I don't know if they'll still send your packages to the entrance so you can pick them up when you leave. Also, the Disney dining plan hasn't returned. So, ultimately, the tip here is: check current policies and don't assume they're the same as last time you were there.

Then, when most of the people were in, I started going in and this one kept bumping my heels with her stroller because I wasn't walking fast enough.

I love cedar point. Top thrill dragster RIP❤
    1. If you live nearby look at the annual pass. Me and my roommate were looking at a weekend at universal for $200 and the lowest annual pass is $324. So for one more day the rest of the year it pays for itself cedar point is around $100. Just something to think about and the kids will have something to do in the summer if you live in the city.
    2. If you have any special needs talk to guest services. Don't go to the one outside the park go to the one inside the park. Most of the time the one outside is long because people are having ticket issues and the one inside is trying to sell you something. They make you wait just not in line.

And if you're going with kids, you have to accept that you might not "get your money's worth" from the visit because they got tired, cranky or hungry, had to go to the bathroom a lot, got inconvenient whims about what they wanted or did not want to do, etc. It's OK. You can make yourself miserable worrying and fighting about it. They'll probably be thrilled just to have been there.

Biggest tip I have - tip if it’s a Disney trip don’t assume it’s like another theme park they run on a system that’s all their own and you really need to play by the system to have the best experience. If you’re doing Disney do a little research before your trip watch things like Disney food blog and other RUclips guides that put out informational videos how to navigate the parks and the app system. Know that Disney reservations open well in advance and fill up quickly it’s not like another theme park. Also not to disagree but to this point they’re fast pass system is a paid system that runs completely different and in that case it actually is better to book rides earlier in the day so that you can book rides again later after that ride reservation is used, and the system changes frequently so do your research so you don’t spend a lot of money on a multi day trip and then miss out on something you want to do. Second theme park tip if taking a multi-day trip like Disney or universal, be sure to pack two different pairs of sneakers by alternating different shoes each day, they won’t rub you feet in exactly the same places so you’ll be less likely to get blisters.

Don't get in line without your entire group. For shows, latecomers could miss the show, or be in a different section. For rides, you might not be able to ride together, or you will get angry looks (or worse) when you try to find the rest of your group

As a Cedar Point local/coaster enthusiast this a really good list. I think you may need a part two and a great place to start is with the roller coaster channels on RUclips. Some them have lists that are more geared towards amusement park edict which are important to address. Three important examples are 1. Use the restroom before entering the lines. In the event of a toilet emergency it is ok to ask the ride op at the ride entrance if you can get your spot back in the queue. Note: ride ops have the final say. 2. Line jumping/ cutting in front of other guests for rides will get you and your party banned from the park. 3. Follow all ride safety rules and don’t mess with the ride restraints so you can get more air time on a coaster. People in the coaster community have seen this happen and most don’t live to tell the tale.

Take your family to the real deal. Why see a fake castle when you can go to Europe and see many real ones? Want to see different cultures, travel.
Why just take the kids to see animals in a Zoo? Also go to see them in nature. You want a ride? Go white water rafting, zip lining or any of the many outdoor eco adventure things to do. Just my options. Lines are not really a problem and cost is relative. The cost of flights is probably the cost of 2 days entry fees. 1 day if you already are flying. Some good spots, Utah, Colorado, ecuador, Costa Rica, spain, Austria, Northern Italy, I love peru, mexico.

Magnum doesn't have lines even during the peak of the day buddy.
Nobody likes Magnum anymore but more importantly that area of the park is dead because Dragster is down and Gemini is down and the water park is down and everybody takes the frontier trail to get to frontier town and not the dead northeast quadrant.
Also, the app is completely useless for ride wait times.
