I bought my 04 Titan on Dec. 31, 2003. I did not see another one on the road for about 2 months. It was the most innovative truck at the time, compared to the competitors, that is why I bought it. The driver seat was the most comfortable of any other seat. Before I bought my truck, a guy that worked at Nissan's proving grounds let me drive a prototype Titan on the road, about 2 months before they went on sale. You should have seen the looks, as I drove on the freeway of people wondering, "what kind of a truck is that?" This same Nissan worker told me that the truck that I was driving with him, was going to be crushed, because it was a prototype. A funny story that he told me, about the throaty exhaust sound. He said that when Nissan engineers from Japan came to check on the development of the Titan in America, they kept complaining about how loud the exhaust tone was, saying "too loud, too loud." The American engineers kept on saying to the Japanese engineers, "if you guys are serious about selling a big truck to Americans, in America, Americans like a loud exhaust in a truck." The Japanese engineers eventually relented after several back and forth volleys with the american engineers. A compromise was made, and that is why the tail end of the exhaust pipe was angled toward the ground, to mitigate some of the sound . I sold my Titan after 250,000 miles. The transmission crapped out right at 170,000 miles. I completely replaced the rear end differential shortly thereafter. Engine had numerous major oil leaks and bad compression on a cylinder, so I did an engine, and transmission changeout from a low mileage wrecked Titan, at the same time. The radiator was replaced under warranty. The brakes were a big problem when it was new. At about 5,000 miles the front discs warped badly. This same problem happened 2 more times with the brakes, shortly thereafter. They were replaced under warranty, then Nissan redesigned the rotors, and fixed the problem. I had one of the earliest production models, hence the problems. At about 200,000 miles I had to totally replace just about every suspension part on the front end, tie rods, upper and lower control arms, steering rack. I probably contributed to wearing out the front suspension, by having an engineer welder friend of mine make a totally custom front end push bar, that followed the front end contours of the truck. It was massive, and weighed about 70 lbs. One time at an intersection, a 3/4 ton truck stalled out in the intersection, blocking traffic. There was already a traffic officer on the scene, and I said to the policeman, "if you will stop traffic, I will push him out of the intersection with my truck." The policeman immediatly complied with, and was very happy with my volunteer spirit, as I'm sure I instantly got him out of a sticky situation, as well. My truck pushed the other truck with remarkable ease. My truck had the factory spray in bedliner, utilitrak system with the big toolbox. The toolbox lock jammed close, and would not open at all, Nissan replaced it under warranty, with a new toolbox. the spray in bedliner wore out and I had holes in the bed of the truck, big ones, so I decided to get rid of it. I was not happy about the cheap clearcoat, and paint that Nissan used that started fading at about 50,000 miles, driver seat wore through at that point as well. Many of the cheap plastic interior parts broke quite easily. It was a very tough truck, with the industry's beefiest frame, and the most powerful engine, with the best throttle response that I have ever experienced, in any vehicle. I'm glad that I bought it, and it served it's purpose well.

Same here bought my ‘04 end of ‘03...still have it, and over 146,000 miles later still a very good truck imho. Same issues with brakes when new but that was taken care of quickly by Nissan. Just replaced all the suspension components and on the third set of tires new this month. Little issues here and there but overall I’m very pleased with my purchase. Oh and btw I have a 40 series flowmaster exhaust currently and yes it’s loud now haha. Nice read my friend

‼️ALL TITAN OWNERS‼️ [MPG IMPROVEMENT] This post I’m making is about the gas mileage (mpg). I recently bought a 2011 Nissan Titan sl crew cab and the gas mileage fell along these lines like you would expect. After a few weeks, I did some research on how to get better MPGs. So I came across the K&N air filters. I added it to my truck and it felt like there was a bit of performance boost (low end torque and minimal hp) but mpgs stayed the same (in my experience). So I looked around a little more, and came across the brand WIX. I switched my air filter from the K&N to the WIX. I kid you not, my mpgs went from 13 to 17.5 (city mpg) !! Some of you may know this. If you don’t know, changing your air filter for you engine can make a difference in fuel economy. If you haven’t tried one it’s worth a shot 🤘🏾🤘🏾

In terms of engine and transmission, it’s very close. Other things, consumable parts, suspension, from my experience Toyota in general has better quality and last longer. Toyota most of the time can be neglected/run without maintenance for long time (you should never do that of course), hence the reputation. But Nissan parts are usually cheaper to buy.

ive loved my 2004 Titan. The engine is definitely the best feature, it sounds great, feels great, and its got good power. Ive built mine for off road, and while its definitely not one one of those crazy rock crawler jeeps, itll keep up with most other off roaders without a problem. a trick i use to avoid blown diffs is turn 4 wheel drive off before going to or from reverse and ive never had a blown diff. maybe its just a matter of time but so far its worked. overall i agree with the video. although id give it a 7/10 in my personal opinion. i love the 1st gen titans and would definitely recommend them if you can find one in decent condition.

The heater issue is easily solved. There's a little box on the firewall with two hoses coming up to it. That is the heater control valve. You can remove the cover - be careful not to lose the screws - and you can lubricate the worm screw that's in there. Also, exercise the ball valve and return it to the same position.. Use a very light grease when doing so.
There are RUclips videos on this subject but some just cheat by making it manual by removing parts.
If the valve needs replacement, it's about $90-135 and comes as a subassembly including hoses.

Purchased my '04 Titan in 2018. It came with over 200k. Problems that came with it were bad front shocks. Easily replaced by any monkey with a decent tool set. Rear window controls didn't work from the drivers door anymore, probably due to water damage. Cleaned contacts and repaired one wire rusted through. Works fine. The exhaust manifolds both were cracked. This is a big job. May want to send that to the pros. You have to take the engine off the motor mounts to get access. My final issue that still haunts me is the actuators for the interior climate controls make a loud clicking noise. This is a large and expensive job to replace the actuators. I just deal with it. But, this stems to another problem, since these actuators can continue to attempt alignment even with the key removed. It's a slow drain on the battery. If looking at a first generation titan, make sure to go through all of the climate control settings. If the actuators are bad, you'll know it.
All that said, I love this truck. The repairs I have made have probably cost me 1k. But I got the truck super cheap. It's spacious, it's strong, it's comfortable, and its reliable. Would recommend. I took this truck from AZ to KS, back to AZ, and eventually to MD. Aside from the above listed issues, which are all relatively minor, the Titan has treated me well.

I have a 2011 Nissan Titan S (base model) with towing package that I bought used about two years ago to tow an RV. I've been impressed with it. It had less than 100k miles and was significantly cheaper than comparable Tundras with far more miles. It tows great and is surprisingly comfortable. It doesn't ride or handle as well as a Tundra but the cost savings were enough for me to overlook it. The only thing I've had to repair in two years of ownership is the heater blend valve started leaking and failed. It was a hard job, but I managed to do it myself.

I am seeing used Titans for a higher asking price than I paid for mine new! If you are going to buy one, get one 2008 or newer (unless the price of a 2004-2007 is a bargain price). Nissan sorted out most of the issues by '08. My '04 SE KC 4x4 only has 58,000 miles and that includes 4 coast to coast trips. I was aware of differential issues when I got it new, I replaced the oil with synthetic. No problems. Broke a leaf spring shackle, but it only dented the bed, didn't penetrate it. No major problems in 15 years of ownership. Still original manifolds, no cracks (yet). I also have the sprayed in factory bed liner with Utili-Track, it's great. Despite 11 PA winters, there is no rust. All other items have been what I'd call regular wear items: brakes, exhaust, tires.

I hope to keep it and get another 200k miles.

One of the things I love about the Titan is the little nuances that Nissan put into it that I don't see in a lot of other truck, like the tailgate designed to slowly open when you pull the handle, not crash down under full weight. About the only complaint I have is that she's got four catalytic converters and when the two forward ones fail (which the inevitably will in a Titan) they're $1,300 EACH to replace and the truck won't pass emissions until you do.

  • @aaronbritt2025
    @aaronbritt2025 4 года назад +6

The manifolds were updated in 2009. Only the '08 and older Titans have the cracked manifold issue. The replacement ones are the updated design and don't crack. Also, the Frontier and Xterra with the 4.0 VQ40 engines are the trucks with the trans cooler cracking issue. The Titan doesn't have that problem. The Titan's problem was the trans cooler line coming off, causing a loss of fluid and trans failure. Nissan issued a TSB and sells updated trans cooler lines. The engines are bulletproof. There are a couple more issues you didn't mention. If the heater doesn't work, check the heater control valve under the hood. They have a high failure rate. If there's a ticking in the dash, it's the actuators on the HVAC box. There's one recall and a TSB about the actuators. The motor mounts fail and the thermostat housing leaks. Also the front and rear diff pinion seals fail. The seal failure, if not addressed, it what causes a lot of the diff failures. I was a Nissan Master Tech for 4 years.

I’m no mechanic, but I have a question about a starting issue, if you don’t mind. 2008 Titan my uncle had sitting for a year or two and he had no issues. I started driving it and noticed every now and again it wouldn’t start, but if I waited 30 minutes or so it would. We replaced some parts that my uncles thought would cause a no start problem like the fuel pump, crank sensor, throttle body that threw a check engine light on, but problem remained. Went to forums and they said the IPDM was notorious for causing all sorts of issues so I replaced that with the updated version and it continued. Kept digging in the forums and someone said to check the ground cables behind the driver door under some plastic push pins and tighten them up. Haven’t had a problem since. Could this be what was causing the intermittent no start issue?

I had a 2005 model for a couple years. I bought it used in 2009. The truck was very solid and easy to drive for such a large vehicle. In my opinion it was much better than the "benchmark" Ford of the day. However, I had lots of issues with it. I had the electrical problem described in this video. I also had to have the seals replaced on both ends of the rear axle. It had another mysterious electrical issue where the cruise control would quit working randomly while traveling down the interstate. In addition the rear back up sonars quit working, even after replacement, and the tire pressure monitoring system stopped working. With all this frustration and the outrageous fuel prices in 2009 and 2010, I traded it off for a small fuel efficient SUV. The whole ownership experience was a big let down. I was really excited when I purchased. The quality issues kept me from buying any further Nissan vehicles. Today I own a Toyota 4Runner and would not trade it for anything (except maybe another 4Runner).

One issue I've happened to mine after five years with my 2014 after is water in the doors after a hard rain. This would drive some people insane but I just think does that sloshing around for a few days after rain really matter?

I looked at Chevy, Ram, Ford and Toyota when I bought a 1/2 ton pu in 2006. The Titan was the only truck I didn't look at due to Consumer Reports having negative reviews. Went with the Tundra, glad I did.

I just found an 04 with just under 200k miles for under $7000. The interior is looking rough but I dont care that much, am I crazy for considering it? I'm in need of a good towing machine.

My 2007 Titan has 170k and it is the best truck I have ever owned I have had Ford and dodge out of all 3 the Titan is the best hands down Dodge Ram transmission problems the Ford spark plugs blowing out of the engine and taking out the coil packs and Ford no recall just a repair kit Ford looks the best but I would never buy another Ford or dodge would like to buy thunder but over priced so I will always own a truck and it looks like it will always be a Titan I bought mine use with 100k ten and now 170k oil changes and breaks are the only things I have had to have done

Sorry to see the Titan 5 ltr. Cummins Turbo diesel was discontinued for lack of sales. My S.L. 2017 Crew Cab with the full leather package is the real deal. The transmission, (Ission)? A 6 speed automatic that engages 4×4 and towing mode could be the lemon. So far no issues.

That’s been the trend. Everyone says they want a diesel so a manufacturer makes one and no one buys it.
