Real quick thought I had about villain shoto;
Villain deku is crazy, villain bakugou, although far fetched, works because at its core he believes he’s in the right, which fuels his rage towards heroes. Villain kiri is incredibly neurotic, villain Denki has a few core brain cells fried beyond repair, villain hawks can be watered down to an AU where the League of Villains grabbed him first, the list goes on.
Villain shoto is probably the most like himself out of any of them, which is incredibly unnerving but also makes sense. Of course in yato’s audios he is much more talkative but that’s a standard set for all the characters to be able to put out content like this. Anyways my point is Shoto feels like he’s already been hovering in the moral gray area for a while, and I can see why. Villains talk a big game about heroes being corrupt and how the system is broken, but I feel like this is old news for shoto. There’s no big revelation for all of this, no ahah moment where he suddenly sees the world as broken and breaks along with it, no instant feelings of rage and betrayal. Why? Hes known that heroes can be terrible people underneath from the moment he first looked his father in the eyes. He’s known that the system is corrupt because what kind of system allows heroes to be the villains of their own family? Villain Shoto understands this, but so does the quiet hero in the show. He knows the bitter truth of the world no matter what alternate universe or trope he is put into, and that knowledge and that weight of having always known eliminates the energy, the frantic need to share the truth with the world, that comes with the shock of discovery. In essence, shoto todoroki is tired of villains. He is tired of heroes. He is tired of heroes that are also villains. He is tired of the system and he never had time to wish that everyone would stop being dicks about it but he probably thinks an unbroken society sounds equal amounts pleasant and unrealistic. Shoto todoroki is absolutely soul crushingly done with everyone’s bullshit no matter how he is written and I think that’s beautiful.
