    Amazing video.
This is TRUE original Chinese invention and quite literally a contribution for humanity. This is an essential tool for Korea, Japan, Viet Nam, Thailand, ...and of course all of China!

I once sat through a lecture on chopsticks while I was in college and I loved it. It was a pleasure to watch this video.

Regarding 4:22, the round tips on the Chinese chopsticks 筷子 represent Heaven whereas the square ends at the handle of the Chinese chopsticks represent the Earth. The round and the square shapes are also represented on the Cong 琮 which is a ritual object symbolizing Heaven & Earth.

I've been using chopsticks with most Asian foods since I was 10 yrs old. My parents did a great deal of business in Japan and I was very influenced by Japanese culture and food. I loved this video. Thank you.

Thank you - the Japanese chopsticks are quite unique and it took me a bit effort trying their pointed chopsticks in Tokyo and Kyoto.

    Fascinating information,
I have been using chopsticks for the last three months as a way to challenge myself. It was difficult -and a little bit painful- at the beginning, but with daily practice, now I prefer to use them instead of my regular cutlery. Every time I use them, I remember the rich history and meaning behind them, and interestingly enough, it inspires me to improve my posture and eat with better manners.
    Thank you so much, Erping!

Interesting video, I wasn't aware of the philosophical context they have, or how the type can vary with different cuisines and attitudes toward dining.

Vietnamese adapted chopsticks since the first colonization of the Chinese empire 2000 years ago. Today, chopsticks are still the main utensils in Vietnamese meals and kitchens. The unique shape of Vietnamese chopsticks is not popular on the internet, but they have one. Their chopsticks are the longest and are in cylinders from top to bottom. The head is a lil bit curved, whereas the tip is circular.

Other Southeast Asian countries used hands before Chinese traders came, but for Vietnamese people, using chopsticks has become a part of what is called Vietnamese culture. They used chopsticks even before Korean and Japanese adapted them from China.

The main reason why passing food directly from one pair of chopsticks to other is a taboo in Japan is that there is a custom to pick up loved one's bones by his family members and put them into an urn to keep right after the cremation.

My wife and I live between Hong Kong and Macau, and we eat out every day. When in a Chinese restaurant, it is sad to note that at least 80% of the people around us don’t know how to use chopsticks properly. Is it not a duty being a Chinese to spend the time to learn the very basic skills that characterize a Chinese?

I was given a silver pair of chopsticks. They almost seem too nice for the humble bamboo chopsticks with which to eat.

Fascinating episode! I am reminded of the scene in the ‘Karate Kid’ movie where Mr Miyagi catches a fly from the air with chopsticks. In the re-make with Jackie Chan he uses a fly swat.

Would not the use of chopsticks be older than Confucianism since maybe in ancient China bamboo easily available and if tribes roaming a few thousands years before that the habit of development and use of chopsticks goes hand in hand with the development of the wok which saved firewood and time to cook if watching for raiding parties with one eye and one on the food

Chopsticks, as rumor had it, were first used as cooking utensils to stir or mix food, but later evolved as dining utensils. :-)

Is there any piece of video without propaganda about the CCP? The hate is strong in this one. Chinese loves peace and harmony. Apparently, this guy didn't get the message.

Research shows that prehistoric cultures (including China) had some eating utensils such as spoons of some sort, but chopsticks were unique to China.
