First heard this song at an Eddi Reader concert last year. Totally blew me away, I sat there with tears rolling down my face as I held my wife's hand. Unbelievably beautiful song, exquisitely performed here by Declan. What a composer, what an artist.
Absolutely beautiful voice and song, and the whole lot! It will always remind me of the love of my life, who sadly passed 2 weeks ago.😢😢😢. He gave me Declan's CD and said: "Play track no2!" And I went home and listen to it...and a few months later our love for each other started to grow so strong.....The words in this song says it all... Thank you Declan! You are so talented! Your song will always be with me!
@@gordonduff5895, Thak you. I cry every time I listen to it. It marked the start of something BIG, and I now have to live with the memory of it...But I am so blessed to have had it...even if it did not last long, only 7 years...
Someone requested this on BBC radio 2 last night. I'd never heard it before and jumped out of bed, scribbled down the name and then today searched youtube. Wonderful voice and love this song! - new fan! lol
Wonderful to hear Linda. Your obviousley an Empath. You have much love to give, always remember to save a little for yourself. The love was always there and it will always stay.
I never eliminated this song from my playlist. It always gives me a feeling that no piece of art can provide. Your Iranian fan here. describing how I relate to it is beyond any description. Thank you. Art has no limits. Love, Shirin
just seen an interview with Paul Weller & he said that this was the one song he wished he wrote and the best song he heard in decades...... high praise indeed.
I agree... amazing music and lyrics! listening to Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine (got my autographed copy, nice!) he is no question one of the greatest singer/songwriters of today!
When ever you look up into the sky and wonder why, think of this tune and remember a man way ahead of his time who underwent many trials but his work prevailed.
Beautiful. Introduced to this 15 years ago and haven’t come across a song to top it in that time. Love the irish folk vibe and combination of fiddle and steel guitar. Declan has a fabulous voice and gives us bass vocalists hope!
i just heard an interview with Paul Weller and he said this is the best song he heard in decades & the one song he wishes he had wrote.... high praise indeed.
You look at Declan and you expect a classic folkie to start singing but he’s so much more. His voice is utterly sublime and pretty well capable of anything. The depth and clarity of his tone is staggering. Ali Bain’s little smiles say it all. Utter perfection. I am in awe.
World class uniquely Irish songwriting and performance sensibility. Love the international/celtic musicians collaboration especially the steel guitar player who really emphasizes the ethereal quality of the song. Gorgeous.
At the very end, Declan remarking on the brilliance of dobro player Jerry Douglas to Donal Lunny ... "yeah, he Da Man" ... that's "Transatlantic" for ya.
Josh Groban brought me here. But I must say no one beats the original. The soul, magic, and raw emotion of this song. Only Declan can give justice to. A new fan here. Well done Declan! 👍💯
Heard this song a good few times before I heard Damien being interviewed on radio and giving the explanation of the song and the beautiful/heartbreaking tale of a young inquisitive Gallileo falling in love and the utter heart break of the situation . I love Chris De Burgh 'In a country churchyard'
There are 44 people who need help!!! Declan has penned and sang something that cannot be recreated by even the best vocalists. The premise of the song is heartbreakingly clever
Is it my imagination or does Danny Thompson look like he hasn't a clue what he should be doing?...definitely didn't expect him to be lending the double bass to this song! Gorgeous song all the same
It isn't always the ability to maintain perfect pitch that makes for effective vocal art. Declan, being the writer of the song, gives it his expression. What he lacks in the area of perfect pitch, he makes up for with the way he colors his phrases. A technically perfect vocal does not always result in the best emotional expression of the song. There is nothing wrong with preferring Josh Groban's version. I am just saying that pitch is not everything.
Don't see any talent in this song at all. . think it's incredibly overrated . .the verse sounds like scorn not his simplicity by Phil Coulter . .I think some people think if a song is sang slowly that it's great. .honestly don't think that this guy has any songwriting talent and people will follow whatever the media tells them is good just like the other guy Hozier.
Rather than consider it the work of media marketing that causes others to enjoy a particular artist or a particular piece of art, may I suggest that art is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder. It is perfectly fine for you to conclude after listening to this song that Declan O'Rourke has no talent for songwriting. Your conclusion also does not diminish the reality that many find the song to be very well written, being moved by Declan's performance, making it far from overrated or without talent for them. Different strokes for different folks.
@@mnhyti I have no clue who else likes it. This happens to be a song that I enjoy. Sure, you can say that it is musically simple. You can complain that the lyrics project a fictional story onto a scientist that may not fit with reality. Some people love speed metal because it can be complex and requires incredible athletic dexterity. That will never appeal to me. That doesn't mean that speed metal is objectively bad music. Some people love it. Good for them and good for those who perform it.
just seen an interview with Paul Weller & he said that this was the one song he wished he wrote and the best song he heard in decades...... high praise indeed.
Quelle l'interprétation et surtout quelle orchestration !!!

I keep returning to this finest example of musical and lyrical artistry. Declan is uniquely gifted.

An Irish man sang this to me. I fell in love.

The beauty of this song took me by surprise. It sounds like a classic, it's ageless. Great musicians too, wonderful arrangement - thank you so much.
At the very end, Declan remarking on the brilliance of dobro player Jerry Douglas to Donal Lunny ... "yeah, he Da Man" ... that's "Transatlantic" for ya.

Beautiful.
These guys are coming to Boston! If you know anything about beautiful music (and live within 100 miles of Boston), you should be there!
I saw them in NYC last month. Absolutely incredible.
I'm in love with this man me thinks
If you are in love with him, I may also be in love with you
Superb.

Yes, one of the few that heard that interview! It makes everything make more sense and ten times more heartbreaking!
Absolute Classic!
Isn't it one of the greatest songs ever written and sung?
his vocal tone is amazing, so good
My sleep song
All those wonderful musicians together. How beautiful and perfect can you get.
I'm here because Paul Weller's comments about this... He is correct. It's beautiful man...
Great instrumentation... a perfect complement to Declan’s stunning voice and lyrics
Only 139,854 views .... crazy ..... I feel like a chosen one ;)
Oh my gosh - this is SO Harry Nilsson! (That's a compliment. I'm also new to Declan.)
C Thomas Halversen totally agree...and me too, Paul Weller introduced me to Declan. ...totally beautiful. I'm SO gonna spread this to my friends
Danny Thompson, Nice!! Great oerformance
So beautiful. Really wanna cover this
Quality.
What a great stone cottage.

Thanks to Paul Weller for recommending this! It was his reply to the question " what song do you wish you had written?"
❤☘❤
Is it my imagination or does Danny Thompson look like he hasn't a clue what he should be doing?...definitely didn't expect him to be lending the double bass to this song! Gorgeous song all the same
What can the process be like to create all of these parts to the arrangement?
A lot of fun. Trust me :-).
Paul weller said this was the best song ever written. I tend to agree.
it has a certain Jacques Brel quality to it.
Does anyone know Declan's guitar is tuned for this?
KingofRoath Drop D
paul weller has said that he wish he'd written this.
Now, I prefer Josh Groban's version. This guy hits too many flat notes for crying out loud, Mary Byrne's version is better than this.
This guy wrote the song ffs
Your point being?
Seriously Alan you are obviously tone deaf or just want attention no flat notes here.
Alan Pat your an idiot and obviously tone deaf

Dont be such a gobshite........................
Listen to what the song is about and you'll understand. Better than 95% of Phil Coulters stuff.
