@@SolDizZo Yes! I highly recommend the wii version. I tried the switch one and it wasn't the same experience. Of course not everyone has a wii, thats just the OG version. Swinging the wii remote as a sword was genius. But it requires a special wii remote or attachment as well 😵
skyward sword was very enjoyable aside from the controller mechanics, which sucks, because i never got into playing it again because of it... but very nice storywise
I don't know how I managed to finish Skyward Sword twice (Normal and Hero mode), I didn't like the controllers (played the Wii version), and the story had too much padding. There is a reason why I prefer the GCN version of TP.
This video is beautiful. To exist is to suffer, but to live is to give meaning to your suffering. The moments we laugh with friends and family, the love we share someone special, or even just a warm sunrise on another day--these are the things worth living for.
Bingo. “The whole game” as a singular puzzle is a perfect take- one that sets it apart from most games. It takes a lot of nuance to do games with a time/temporal facet to them. MM nailed this, while simultaneously replicating the great gameplay of OoT.
I am so grateful I grew up with these kind of games and stories. So much love and soul went into them. Fantastic video, it really shows how unique and special this game is. I wonder if we'll ever get something like it again? It's become rare to see games that create the same feelings as this did - some still do but not nearly enough.
Love the video. No other Zelda game has felt as alive as this one. How has Nintendo not been able to recreate the feeling of walking around a world so full of life since Majora's Mask?
i feel they’ve had other games w life like TOTK for example but what makes MM feel so organic is because without death what is life? no other Zelda game has such a focus on death like said in the video so this paradox of of time and impending doom makes it feel like you’re living the game not just playing it and i don’t think that will ever happen again sadly
If it were easy to make masterpieces, they wouldn't be masterpieces. Majora's Mask resulted from a confluence of factors that I suspect few, if any, knew would make such a good game from the outset. It's exceedingly difficult to make something like Majora's Mask completely on purpose. It's no secret by now that many things in the game can be seen as metaphors for development on the game itself. The despair, hope, grief, courage that you see demonstrated in game- all of it is so very real and and woven into the game by the very people who suffered through development. The team who worked on Majora's Mask was beyond proficient, but I doubt they would have been able to make such a good game without that driving pressure. To be given such a tight deadline to follow up on what was the greatest game ever made- it must have been an exceedingly potent kind of pressure that those devs felt. And to think that they actually did it. Two years later, the new greatest game ever made came out. Not unlike the masks in the game, that cartridge held the dreams and nightmares of those devs in such a way that we still talk about it today. The emotions it carries are too real, rendered in 3D about as well as anyone could have done at the time. It invites us to connect with the characters and feel what they feel, to understand not only them as individuals but how they fit into the greater whole of Termina. More than any other Zelda game, Majora's Mask makes you care less about defeating the great evil and far more about saving the precious people of Termina. The laconic nature of the game's dialogue only enhances this quality, leaving gaps for us to muse on how these people must feel. Very few games place meaningful emphasis on these factors like Majora's Mask. Copying the concept isn't the problem, of course; execution is king. It's painfully easy for a game like this to instead feel corny, flat, and unengaging.. But the dev team got everything juuust right. It is an incredible accomplishment and one of the reasons that nearly 25 years later, we're still talking about this game as one of the greatest. TL;DR: mm rules oot fukkin suks
its the weirdness effect I personally think. They go for mass appeal. While the newer games are crazy achievements in systemic game design, they ditched on a lot of the weirdness in the world building that adds so much character and charm to the world.

I love how the enforced one year development time limit and the existential dread that put on the developers leaked into the game itself. It's a game where you are constantly looking at the clock and worrying about much much time you have left, just like the developers of the game as they rushed to put it together.

I just finished playing Majora’s Mask for the first time in 20 years. You articulated my sentiments about this masterpiece much better than I could. Thank you for this!
Every time I see a video essay of MM, it’s a must watch from me! Seeing how so many people over the years have been affected by this game, enough so to make an essay on it, makes me so happy and they always hit for me! 👏👏👏 absolutely amazing, what an incredible game
Great video man and the message at the end is very well written! You gotta love it when youtubers you watch make a vid about a game right as you're playing it 😎
I do wish in the cutscene with the Deku Scrub they used a more unique model. As the reflection of denial, it could be the deku scrub is clinging to life through you, hence why there is no mask it can't let go. Imagine if the song of healing for the scru was instead it remembering a race with the butler. And then Link waving good bye to the scrub. I wish it could have been made more clear a connection.
There’s a theory that you’re not actually the Butler’s son, but just a scrub that resembles him, therefor that’s why no one at the Deku Palace recognizes you when you’re wearing the mask.
@@clydesapere1977 It would be a little weird that the Butler doesn't recognize his own son when the other masks have people clearly recognize the previous owner. Perhaps he should have been a relative of the Butler, so that wouldn't be so direct. Either that or there could be something in Deku life cycles, maybe they aren't often raised by direct parents.
@@Shadowwand Yeah. My personal counter to the theory is that Zoras and Gorons have a narrow variety as far as differences in looks. Meanwhile, we have many forms of Deku: Wild, Business, Common, Royal. Link coming to their palace as a deku with blond hair and a green hat makes him completely unrecognizable as the son and you're just a new guy. Meanwhile, everyone thinks you're Mikau with a green tunic or Darmani with a green hat.

Love the video. Obviously Ocarina of Time is goated for being the original, but Majora's Mask took that game and took it to the next level in terms of new items and mechanics. Also, the aesthetic/vibe of the game being kinda scary and odd in such a good way. It's like horror, regret, fear, etc. I love the music and the entire concept of the game. I played OoT at my cousins house and we beat it together and Majora's Mask was my most hyped gamed of my young child years. I remember buying the strategy guide and everything.

Not to be "that guy" but your view on this game's themes reminds me of Persona 3. Not about death, but life, and the ways we impact those around us. But on Majora's mask, I only played the 3DS version (which many say "ruins" aspects of it, but I didn't mind). but it was a Zelda I didn't expect to love as much as I did. Going in I was like "what, only 4 dungeons? Small world? Constantly resetting time?" Then I found out those dungeons are all amazing, the regions leading to them are basically dungeons themselves, and the world, while small, is probably the most "alive" one in any Zelda game. Can I also just say your voice is really relaxing?

I would like to add, as much as I love majoras mask. the Intro, while it is well designed at showing what the game is about. it does an absolutely terrible job at conveying to players what they need to do. I find that most players who play majoras mask will put the game down because they end up dying on day 3, multiple times before they end up getting out of town. Not because they are incapable. But they didn't realize the kids shooting at a balloon were the ultimate guide to finishing the starting area. This first cycle is designed well, but has absolutely awful instructions. I would say its actually some of the worst conveyance in video games and one of. if not the only reason the game flopped.
