  • It is possible to upgrade your old D Cell battery flashlights to use rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries (18650) and replace the halogen bulbs with LEDs. Here is what I did.

Put an LED bulb in my old 3D cell mag lite and it blasts. Same bulb in a Fulton 2D cell and nothing too good really happened. Glad you got a good result in your Fulton.

I say extend the life. I'm about to do the same. I found a made in China knockoff of the angle head. Heavy, chinsy switch, lenses that are too close in tolerance to the lense holder compartment, but LED and bright when working. Found them at tractor supply. Spent some time the other day helping my none year old figure out how to fix the switch on his. I kept thinking about how I never had issues with the Fulton except for dim lighting. My Fulton does have an LED now and I found 3xAA to D adapters. The adapters get you 4.5 V per "D" instead of 1.5 V. I recently saw a post where 14500s were used in these adapters. That would give 24V and rechargeability but I'm not sure if the light housing can take the heat of an LED that runs at that voltage. We'll find out I guess!

Do the LED upgrades have LVP(Low Voltage Protection) built in?
If not, then you'd want to use protected 18650 batteries.
Once a liion battery drops too low(typically 2.75v or 2.5v) it will be damaged and possibly won't be able to be charged again.

The LED is one designed to be used as a replacement bulb for a flashlight, so it doesn’t require a reset after power shut off.
The batteries, might not have protection from discharging too low. It honestly wasn’t something I stressed about while I was playing with this project. If I need to replace these in the future, I’ll make sure to look for this.
